Hi Folks,

Is this for real? It is tempting as this was my planned 3rd model

http://shop.deagostini.co.uk/hms-surprise-subscription-28-part-option.html

Obviously it works out more money but I think it will be a while before I got a spare 500 quid floating about

My first wooden ship completed was a subscription one. The San Juan Bautista by deAgostini. So all I can say if you are interested go for it.

There aren't but two options: do it FAST, or do it RIGHT.

Current Project Build Log: Soleil Royal in 1/72. Kit by Artesania Latina.

Last finished projectsRoyal Ship Vasa 1628; French Vessel Royal Louis 1780. 1/90 Scale by Mamoli. 120 Cannons

Future projects already in my stash: Panart: San Felipe 1/75; OcCre: Santísima Trinidad 1/90;

Wish List: 1/64 Amati Victory, HMS Enterprise in 1/48 by CAF models.

So much to build, so little time!

Hi.

Cost is high at £672 and what scale is it ?

They are good kits for bigginers as they have a book as a guide.

Beware of total costing.

Regards Antony.

Edit:- more info.

Have a look here http://forum.model-space.co.uk/default.aspx?g=topics&f=40

672 is not that much more then if you bought it as a kit and you do get the tool kit with it (dont know if the tools are good) and it does seem they give good step by step instructions with it

for most of the other ones i have seen of them the price is a fair bit more (up to double the price of a kit)

Current builds : HMS Bounty, Constructo Pilar

Next build : undecided

On the Shelf : AL San Juan, Mamoli HMS Victory

Shopping around you can get the kit for £526, so with the £40 tool kit its not too bad really. I didnt realise you could get kit subscriptions, good idea if you lack the money up front.

Also, its a good way of sneaking another build in the door, do it a bit at a time :)

my wife was going to subscripe me to the hms victory kit ($15 AUD a week) . was very tempting but in a 120 issues the price would be a fair bit higher then if bought as a kit (even with the extras they provide)

instead i said thanks hun but instead of doing this just add $15 to my weekly hobby budget and i can buy some other stuff with it :P

Actually, I'm confused by the different websites for DeAgostini. I found this one where you select your country and that affects what items are available.

Model Space - Ship Models from De Agostini

With this, for US builders, it looks like the choices are HMS Victory, HMS Surprise and IJN carrier Akagi. This is all Artesania Latina stuff.

Yes, in the long run it's more expensive this way. But for many of us, it's easier to part with a limited amount of cash each month than a big chunk of cash all at once. Plus, if you get stuck or run out of time, I think you can just cancel the subscription either temporarily or restart it later (assuming this subscriptions are still available then).

I think it's a pretty cool option to be able to build this way, though I have to admit, I never went for any of those "build in stages" offers that Model Expo would periodically have. Still, options are better than no options.

be-careful, it is a lot of money the kit can be bought for 2/3 of the price

tool kit is nothing special, nothing that someone with a kit under there belt wouldn't already have

there are lots of customer complaints about last issue/non issue (if that makes sense)

i am not against this sort of thing at all, just helping you with my opinion

I am currently collecting the De Agostini HMS Victory kit. The quality of the parts until now seems to be good. I could have bought the kit as a whole and much cheeper, but choose for this monthly kit because of the extra magazine, which I found, contains a lot a interesting background information.

Also, it feels a little bit as being a child again... waiting for a monthly package to open and explore :P

Current build: Wasa (Corel)

Already build: HMS Fly (Victory Models)

In case anyone needs or wants the kut, there are numerous auctions on ebay selling complete set for approx 350-400 gbp. Thats about a half of original cost... I managed to buy it there and paid about 320. With a bit of luck you can save a big buck...

Pavol stands for Paul, Pablo, Paolo etc. Please do not try to pronounce it, just call me Pav...
