Hello all. Thank y'all for accepting me into your community of ship builders. I am new to ship building. I received my first ship kit yesterday. It is the Occre Buccaneer. I will be starting this kit in a week or so. I would welcome any tips that y’all might have for me. Thanks again folks.

Thank you Jim. After I posted earlier I started reading more topics about beginners ship building. What I am reading is that I probably should have started small instead of jumping right into a big one. But...what can I say. Rookie move? Are there any beginner kits that you would recommend me start with? Thanks.

A common way to become overwhelmed and bail on this whole endeavor is to start with too advanced a project. 

 

I am very old school, so grain of salt and all that:

You might take a look at MS Phantom --

Solid hull - it has beautiful lines.

A down size is that it is 1:96.  That is the inflection point for entry into the miniature.  That is where the physical limitations of wood enter into a simulation of components instead of replication.   For a first model, that is not really a factor to worry about.  You could also use a really thin veneer and try planking above the copper.

Thank all y’all for the welcomes. I purchased the buccaneer kit from the ages of sails website. They seem to have a pretty good selection of beginners kits as well. I’ll browse around there and there’s a couple other websites I am going to look around in as well. I’m ready to get started. Lol

Hello Calvin and welcome to MSW. This is a great place for good advice and we look forward to seeing your progress.

 

You have already had a 'heads up' concerning starting with a big project: I also am in at the deep end with my first build, a scratch build, and have recieved good advice of a similar nature. I decided on a couple of smaller projects to practice on before going further in to my big build and it is so far proving to be worth while. I will post some of these little 'uns soon.

It is a good idea to study the build logs, some are by first-timers who have gone down the same path you are about to travel and have tackled the what-do-I-do-now moments with help from the members. It is a pretty friendly place.

ok. Here I go with the green hand questions. Please bear with me. Lol. I have been reading about “building logs” on your posts. Please Correct me if I am wrong here. Are you talking about people posting their progress on a ship build? Or is this a physical thing?

They are in the forums, see 'browse' at top left of page, choose 'forums' and the build logs are divided into kits and scratch-builds, plus lottsa good sub-types.

I suggest you choose a comfortable chair because there is a lot to trawl through.

As the others have said, start small.  And I'll add: Open a build log.  It really is the best way to get help and make some friends.
