I'm inclined to ask, what are you thinking in terms of taking it through the STL conversion process? What would be your end-goal?

Hi Kurtis - apologies,  I follow threads via a weekly highlights email, hence it can be ages before I see replies!

Anyway, back to the point: if I was you I’d be wanting to turn this into a hard copy that was sat on a shelf, that’s all. And because it’s currently soft copy, you could do that at whatever scale you wanted. True about the sails, unlikely that you could get something good via printing, and of course you’d have to do all the rigging by hand.

I would love to have a hard copy sitting on my shelf! :D I feel it might be possible with further tweaking as there's a lot of intersecting geometry, and each part / plank would have to be printed solo. It'd be a big job refining it , printing it all, and then finding ways to put it all together again. Some parts might need real world readjustment or refinement, and indeed the sails and rigging would have be the same as how you guys do them with your wooden models.

Hey, I'm still here! 👀

I've made some fairly significant progress on the texturising, rigging and modelling this ship -- including setting up a figurehead which took me a long time! I'm still doing some final cleanup but I'm finally nearly ready for some renders.

I've started working in a job full time so I haven't had as much time as I used to, but I'm still doing bits on this every night.

I should be posting some more updates (comparatively) soon. Keep your eyes peeled!

@Kurtis looks amazing! I model ships as well although still learning alot and wanted to ask if you would be able to maybe give some tips and such as I would love to get my ships to the level you have!

either way great work I am intrigued in what you have in store next :)

I appreciate this! :)
I'm happy to share some tips and tricks if you have any questions!  Feel free to let me know

I just read this from start to finishand I love the process and adore the final result! This is a masterpiece! 😍

Just as the other user above I am looking to learn to model ships. I have tried multiple times but I got stuck and then forgot about it. I just started a new small project of a yacht. And I am kinda stuck again. See image: https://imgur.com/a/6MIwOYe

These are the plans: https://imgur.com/PJol0ET

The question is: how does the model look and how do I continue from here? Should I clean up the hull first? How do I 'thicken' the hull? I would be really happy if you can teach me.

That’s quite an achievement Kurtis, it looks highly detailed and convincing. Is there a way to let people see it in 3D? You know, rotate, zoom, all that kind of thing.

Certainly!

There's quite a tight space constraint on that there website to upload models, so I had to over simplify the textures and bin some of the cannon that are hidden behind the bulkheads / lower decks, but most of the exterior is still visible. I do offer the model for sale as well so you can use it (with all cannon and textures) in Blender however you wish. If you're interested in that, let me know.

I believe it was you asking about a physical copy of the ship. I figure the best way would be to get it photo-printed and put it in a frame on my wall somewhere. That's on my to do list.

Thank you! You have a great start here, but I would say you have quite a lot of excess geometry. I would consider trying to get used to only adding a vertex / loop when there's a significant change of direction, and then let the subsurf handle the rest. Add loops only where you really need some pinching.

I don't know what ship it is you're modelling, but I would say quite a big issue with both mine and yours there is the bow. They're supposed to slope in on most ships and I can imagine this particular vessel difficult to push using oars or sail.

Shape of the keel aside, you can probably start looking at the modifier stack if you haven't already. Add a solidify modifier to give your yacht some immediate depth, and then you can start adding the decking. The quarter galleries will be finicky as that's when you'll have to start adding and deleting geometry.

I hope this give you an idea for a starting point.

Thank you for your reply. I went back to an earlier version with less excess geometry. Here I only added a line for every 'line' (don't know what to call that) on the ship plan. This is the result before modifiers.

This is after added a SubSurf. Looking from the top you can see that I still need to build out the bow forward. So here I do need to add more geometry, right?

The plans do not point out where the decks are and how big the chamber is, I guess there is a deck at the main whale? What would you do in this situation?

It's a Paviljoensjacht, similar to a Statenjacht like this 'Utrecht' here.

Would it be ok to ask you for help as I go along? Would this thread be ok? Or should I start a new topic?

From a cursory glance, I would agree that the deckline would be approximately where the wale line is, perhaps just above.

I would say that you should definitely start your own thread if you haven't already; you're much more likely to receive responses and it wont get mixed up with my own works. Be sure to tag me in it if/when you do.
