pre Trafalgar victory

is it possible to build a pre Trafalgar victory from a mantua kit( or equivalent), or is there an alternative to a complete scratch build? how do i go about finding the differences? sorry i know this sounds like a complete beginner question but i am just starting on the scratch build journey and not sure i have enough experience for a complete build from scratch ,

I don’t see why you can’t modify an existing kit.  The Victory as she is now is a hybrid 1765 / 1803 stemming from her 1920’s refit, they used the original 1765 plans for her restoration as there was little other information to hand in those days, so a kit takes you a long way.  The main challenges will be reconstructing her open stern galleries and the complex figurehead she sported when first built, fortunately there are several contemporary models available at the National Maritime Museum (search ‘rmg collections HMS Victory’) to help, as well as plans.

You will be faced with making or obtaining figureheads whether you modify a kit or scratch build, the problem with off the shelf carvings is one of scale, and matching them to your base kit, so it could all be down to your modelling skills.  CAF Models one of the forum sponsor offers a 1765 figurehead at 1:72 which matches the Amati Victory Models kit, but at $923 is as expensive as the kit.

I’ve included some images below of Victory as launched.

It is a very interesting model with many features rarely seen:

All the scuppers on the decks

Open Top of the side galleries
Side gallery windows with different rhythm of battens
D-Blocks for mizzen and main mast
different colors of the inside of the ports!
number of eyebolts on the port lids
Lid of the quarterdeck ports have the lanyards up to the poop
Axiometer
Gratings Qurterdeck
Skylight with flat top
All the different colors of the inside hull
Eyebolts beside the Preventer Chains for tightening the shrouds

form of the side entry steps
Scuttles for Top Tackles
straight chimney

Preveter chains for the rudder, leading to the poop (!)

And many more features 🙂 🙂 🙂

The only thing I do not understand are the stantions for the hammock netting on the quarter deck. This does not make too much sense to my understanding. Any idea about that?

To have the open rails sat within the hammock stanchions is strange, but is this a forerunner to the built-up barricade? If the hammocks can be manoeuvred past the rail then a small-arms barrier of hammocks can be created. It makes no sense to have them sat atop an open rail as that would negate their efficacy.

BTW - there is the anchor lining, although not shown on the present Victory Goodwin references this at page 88 of his HMS Victory pocket manual and that it would have been in place when the ship was operational.

@Morgan

Yes and I thank you for pointing the lining out to me. But are there references how this looked as the chain board was set up one deck higher at Trafalgar?

Hello Gary, thank you!

That is a very good base for reconstruction.

And thank you for the hint I missed the lining completely! Have still to fix it.

All the best, DAniel

Hi Anthony,

I also tried to do a HMS Victory myself before the one still in Portsmouth. ☺️
For my part, I wanted to get closer to the 1737 Victory (which sank in 1744) with a number of modifications in colors, layout and rigging.
But I started from the Victory kit from Artesania Latina at 1:84, which imposed some constraints.
I think it is close to your project, the Victory of 1765 being quite far from the one we know, restored in 1929. Especially on the back castle which was totally modified.

Here is the link of the thread to see the result:
