Crowsfeet & Euphroes

Recommended Posts

I have been looking for a bit now and have yet to find a contemporary picture of a sailing ship of the American Navy showing crowsfeet and euphroes. I realize they are seldom shown, but I find none. Were they used in the U.S. Navy?

I always thought it was only the English who used them.

I am building a French 74 guns ship 1:48 from J. Boudriot, and these items (# 10, 11)  will be on the menu in the near future...

Thanks for clearing that up on the French.  I was wrong.

I included them on several drawings without really thinking about it. But recently perusing old photographs I noticed there were none. Of course old photos mostly showing these vessels laid up in their old age lack many of the finer bitsof rigging they catrried when active. There are several photos of the 1840's sloops taken when they were training ships in the '70's & 80"s and I can't see any.

I did some looking at my info.... French frigates didn't seem to have them according the plans.  I have to wonder if there was any reason why they're on some and not on others.   I don't recall seeing them on US frigates either so maybe they're a ship of the line only thing?
