First of all I will need your help (I know I can rely on you). This model I'd like to do with a great care and accuracy. Before I do anything I'm not sure of, I will be torturing you with questions My first question is : what's your opinion on coppering the hull? I need your opinion in this building log. A shop-assistant told me that constructo don't build HMS Pandora any more. Does anyone know why? AND ANOTHER QUESTION about the treenails. The kit is 1:85 scale. Is it ok to put 0.6mm treenails. Won't it be too large? I had a hard time to decide to use nails or not, but in the end I decided not to use them, as I dont think I could get the look right. You can also consider to use flat colors, or add a coat of flat varnish on top of that stern (that looks really nice btw!). For me its easyer to get it to to look used and vibrant with flat colors. Again its more a question about aesthetics and what look you like. But if you look at Lawrences (member canoe) build it looks really nice in gloss paint! So you can go either way. As far as coppering is concerned it is of course largely down to personal choice, but Pandora was first coppered in May 1779 and was re- sheathed in1789, presumably before her mission to recover the Bounty Mutineeers. Treenails are a tricky one, they would be very small indeed at 1:85 scale, in fact they are barely visible at 1:1 scale, but again it is a matter of choice whether to go down that route. Personally I wouldn't bother at scales less than 1:48. Ray Posted August 29, 2013 Share #7 Posted August 29, 2013 Hi tree nails at this scale would need to be so small you most likley would not see them, I think any scale above 1/48 are better of without them I have scale planked my Diana deck and at 1/64 the planks are very narrow, coppering the bottom would be the right choice, but at the end of the day its the builders choice. According to the treenails - they were about 4-5cm in 1:1 scale so I'm cosidering 0.6mm. But I would like to confirm my thoughts with more experienced users of this forum. It looked subtle and in scale, but I dont remember what scale or thickness it was though. Not sure what the laws are for different countries, so you might not be able to have different size sent to you in the mail. However I have just added them at about 0.5mm diameter and then filled them with a wood paste so that they are barely visible. I like the subtle detail effect but it is up to you how you go and I certainly do not like very visible, black treenails. I'd certainly look at rebuilding the quarter badges versus those given in the kit. Pandora is a beautiful ship and I too recommend the AoTS book if you can get a copy. I look forward to your updates. I'm rebuilding the quarter badges too. The holes for windows are now drilled out. I will paint them and put a sort of transpatrent plastic (PET) to imitate glass. Excellent modifications on your badges - that is hard work starting from a cast white metal piece. For me doing these early details was about getting familiar with the scale - 1/64 in my case. I think it is a useful way to find "the eye" for the whole build. I hope you launch into the hull soon and I look forward to that progress. I want to put some transparent plastic to imitate the glass. This scale (1:85) is really tricky. The parts are rathersmall comparing them to my Santa Maria (1:50). Soon there will be more photos. In the second photo as a comparison to the main part. There's one piece left but I must drill the holes out. Now I'm thinking of the "glass" and window frames (they will be made of a white sticker. I think doing proper windows will be a good thing and make her look a lot better. Don't use trenails. They were closer to 1" than two, and are just about achievable at 1/64 (i've tested 0.4mm in my 4mm wide planks and it looks ok), but at 1/85 they will look too out of scale. I would recommend getting Lees "masting and rigging", and the AotS:pandora for the rigging. My recollection is that constructo builds great looking kits, but historical accuracy is sometimes suspect. The only reason you'd have to not copper is if you wanted the opportunity to show off the wood of the hull in a more artistic presentation. You are right that it is getting a little small for showing the nails - however if you look at victory models 1/72 plates they have etched the pattern on. On one hand it would be quite a new experience for me but on the other hand, inaccuracy is not good then (how to make rivets at the scale of 1:85???) Without rivets it would b a bit strange. Any ideas about the dimensions and how to make them? I was thinking of using a needle or a very thin drill (0.1mm). What do you think?
