I am considering building the Titanic as my next project. Completing the Endurance by Occre.  I like Occre and am thinking of their Titanic, or is there a better kit? Also I want to add lights. Are there any logs that have included lights?

I think the trumpeter 1/200 is probably the best on the market currently, yet still requires modifications if you want to be really accurate. But out of the box it appears to build into a nice Titanic. Olympic and Britannic are also possible with modifications.

Current Builds: HMS Winchelsea 1764 1:48 - 5th rate 32 gun frigate (on hold for now)

                         HMS Portland 1770 Prototype 1:48 - 4th rate 50 gun ship

David,

I agree with David G.  The 1/350 Minicraft Titanic is in the size range you are looking for and is a good quality kit.  You have a couple of options with this kit; the base kit, the Deluxe version, which includes photo etched railings, or, if you want more detail besides the railings, go with the Tom’s Modelworks Titanic photoetch set.

One of the best kits for accuracy and detail is the Amati 1/250 kit. A bit over 3 feet long.Once you except the 5-6 bulkheads that need altering and you replace the colored card and some of the plastic parts with photo etch it builds into a nice model.

If you are going with plastic then the Trumpeter kit is the best kit to go with.

Not a kit builder, but why buy a POB kit and go through the effort to plank the hull if the end result is a steel hulled ship?  If you want to replicate one of the classic “Steamship company” models of long ago with smooth hulls than effort and some sort of goop will required to hide the planking.  On the other hand if you want to make the effort, the planked wooden substrate would allow plating, I like shellac impregnated paper, for a realistic appearance.  A plating expansion drawing is available on Titanic websites.

But! The moulded side shell plating seen on the plastic model kits offered is way over scale; more like armor plate.  If Titanic had been plated with plating that thick she would not have sunk.
