I use a mini bench clamp vice and put my dowel / mast in there (to have it nicely fixed and not rolling when sanding) and then use a file or sanding block (often on blocks to keep a steady height). Then I turn the dowel / mast by 90 degress and go on with the same procedure.

The benchtop clamp vice was (years ago) a tenner... so not breaking the bank but a nice helper for sure.

Wasn’t sure how far I’d get today but has gone well. Except for two of my new drill bits breaking. Shame as the smaller ones have been really good. Both on the topmast so just bad karma ;)

All gone together nicely and a couple of coats of black. I’ll varnish once dry and that should do for now.

These broken drill bits can be a pain, wish they would find something that would solve this issue. I try most times to use my Dremel  Workstation to do really small drills. Unfortunately not always possible...

They have inbuilt RFID so they can check which to break!

Hopefully the rest survive, if so a set per boat isn't the end of the world as they do drill very well.

Gladly building a boat doesn´t just take a week  or it could become an expensive thingy ^^

Very! In the not too distant past I've very much enjoyed large Lego kits but had to stop as however much fun they are they're VERY expensive per minute of entertainment.

Tell me, I have tons of LEGO in the house as well, was thinking (dreaming) of building Stormwind (World of Warcraft) of LEGO, but I realised that this might need 200 times more LEGO as I own right now... but still tons of LEGO here and won´t sell it, even if the prices are increasing (I´m a bit of a vintage collector with old Commodore C64s, Amiga and Atari computers, cameras from 1872 till nowadays and such stuff - my wife gave up to kill me lol)...

I try and not collect or I wouldn't stop. Moving to a much smaller property helped there. I'd definitely enjoy old cameras as long as I could use them. At the moment I just use a Nikon D5 & D850, though not for model pic usually!

Get you there and a ken, but unfortunately we did the opposite way, we moved into a 3 bedroom bungalow with garage (my wife is disabled and can´t use steps anymore) so it`s hard to stop collecting LEGO lol, she even supports me in it.

I buy them and fix them / restore them, all my cameras are working or were working once (have not the time to check on them regulary) but some of the older ones I use frequently. For daily use I have a Canon EOS 70D, a 5D Mark III and a Canon EOS 3 SLR and a PowerShot G7X Mark III for video (YouTube).

I prefer Canon but amazing Nikon glass is so much cheaper than Canon these days. I mainly use a 300 2.8 & a 500 4 so cost was important!

Get that one but I started a long time ago with Canon, so no need to change. I have quiet some L lenses (which I collected over the years).

Do you know if they’re carbide? I’ve been looking for the HSS version but can’t find any.

Not certain as where I got them from doesn't state. However seemingly identical ones sold on Amazon say carbide:

Bowsprit shaped and fitted. Then became apparent that this put it out of line vertically and horizontally. Not horribly so but enough to annoy. Removed and filed so the alignment is good. I'll sand out the file marks next time.

Booms & Yards started. Working from the plans using a file and sandpaper. I find it useful to use masking tape to try and keep the tapers on the right place.

On the Booms I also use a file to make a slot for the jaw to slide into to try and make somewhat of a mechanical connection between the two. Attached with PVA and held with clamps to go off.

On all measure off the plans and use masking tape to try and get the wedges in the same place around the part.

In typical Amazon fashion packet of drill bits arrived with four rather than five packs. Also fairly typical when complained they just refunded. Result!

Thanks Micha. All painted and drying but forgot to take a pic. Next time it'll be all the blocks and bits and pieces.

Was wondering if I can fit the booms but not the yards when the mast is fixed to the hull as I think it would make fitting shrouds and ratlines safer?

I would think so but I´m not an expert about ratlines. But just by logic I would say it should be easier and safer to fit the shrouds and ratlines. But I would make sure that the mast is properly secured and fixed, if the mast collapses the entire work is ruined and you start again.

Thanks Micha. Me neither I've only done them once. Got the knot for the ratlines right about half way through? I was thinking without the yards fitted they might survive! This time I've test fitted the mast so I know it'll go in ok once it's got lots of delicate parts attached.

Like I said, I´m not an expert in ratlines or rigging yet but that`s how I would have done it anyway. Sounds logical to me at least. I´m confident you will make it properly and it will work out fine. I´m still fighting my Roar Ege from Billing Boats lol...

Fair bit of progress today.

Got nearly all the blocks and foot ropes on ready to fit the booms and yards later. Quite pleased. A mix of gel and liquid CA to fix knots and ropes. Gel when I need to keep a piece of rope in place while working it and liquid to hold knots.

IMG_4088.thumb.jpeg.5ed3e00b9b66a398766d6ac4d45b33e8.jpeg

IMG_4094.thumb.jpeg.37cc147fdd60bb6b75cc0558d1ff0977.jpeg

I've decided to leave these off for now and proceed with the shrouds and ratlines. Hopefully their absence will make this a safer process and not make life harder (or much harder) later.

IMG_4090.thumb.jpeg.5230b976ce68b1c305c04f7f28fe083e.jpeg

IMG_4093.thumb.jpeg.9e97213edaad3287dc70b9f032e6655f.jpeg

Used my monitor on one side and top desk shelf on the other (for each side) to hold the shroud up and out of the way to tie off at the top, make sure that rope is taught up to the top then in contact with nothing else for a drip of liquid CA.

IMG_4089.thumb.jpeg.2a0637a374f4861182f21b6ef385ab7c.jpeg

Next time I'll try and make some guide of jig for the dead eyes to keep them even as I usually find that difficult.

Simon.

Looks pretty neat Simon. Well done.

I didn´t have that much success but even I got a bit further with my build. In picture 5, does it just look like or are the two right lines twisted in the upper part (close to the outrigger)?

Like I said before, I´m not an expert on rigging or ratlines but does it matter if it would be twisted or is it easy enough to un-twist it?
