Spanish Galleon 1607 by PvG Aussie - Imai Kagaku - 1/100 - PLASTIC

Greetings,

We had a great break away for a few days in the Town of 1770 and Agnes Waters. Look them up and you'll see how lucky we are. So much so, that my good wife even allowed me to make shrouds and ratlines on my special jig!

S5.thumb.JPG.b0cfa1f878e4c750c92d64b51d4735e5.JPG

Since I've been back, I have done heaps of work on the decks. Most rewarding!

D5.thumb.JPG.128adfd213d221b40ae208cf4249a8bd.JPGD6.thumb.JPG.4345ff9f37b658e8208b845914f495d4.JPGD7.thumb.JPG.290865fe7dc58a18e5cd5ca8d250c493.JPG

From here on, there are a few things to finish 'down below' and on the deck, and then I go UP!!!

Thanks for continuing to follow and encourage me on this build. It is always appreciated, especially when I hit the hard bits. 😁

Cheers,

To give a bit more of a feeling for where this is, here's a larger scale map.

image.png.05bff6db06c53d08bb7456a43ee79b12.png

And why the name?

"The town is built on the site of the second landing in Australia by James Cook and the crew of the bark HMS Endeavour in May 1770 (and their first landing in what is now the state of Queensland)." (Wikipedia)

"The community of Seventeen Seventy hold the re-enactment of this historic landing each year as part of the 1770 Festival held in May."

And the climate:

Steve,

You know what to do if you are in this area, another 2.5 hours and you're in Rocky (where we live).

Steven / @Louie da fly, I'll expect you this Wednesday! It's only 2076 kilometers and according to Google Maps, starting at Ballarat, it will only take 22 hours. I'll make sure there is a cold beer ready for your arrival in Rockhampton.

No worries, mate. It'd make a change from the weather here. Rain, rain and more rain. And cold. Currently 9 degrees Celcius (48F), feels like 6. Good old Ballarat.

Greeting all,

I'm pleased to show the recent addition of the masts. They are painted and weathered, as are the 'tops'. It's strange to see the pronounced angles of the masts as they slope much more than any other ships I have built.

M1.thumb.JPG.61960ef2c4bd07134bf3b37fdcd3d1eb.JPG

Next, I'll be adding the standard rigging and stays. This should pull out the sideways bend in the Foreword mast.

Thanks for all the encouragement.

Cheers,                           :piratetongueor4:

I suggest doing what I did and filling the slots in the masts near the mast-tops, shaving off the parrels, and making some sort of parrels or truss of your own so you can actually tack the yards. Great paint job!

Good idea

I would do that too.

And the masts are then sturdier during the installation of the standing rigging

Ferris and Patrick, I take on board (no pun intended) what you are suggesting, but I have no access to sufficient beads for the parrels and don't see myself having to 'reef' the sails. I am happy to just furl the sails if needed.

Most in the U.S. think Australia is just some big island down under somewhere ... but fail to comprehend that if one overlays maps of the U.S. and Australia, they are about the same size - around 3 million square miles each.  Brisbane to Perth is as far as Washington D.C. is to Los Angeles as the Galah flies - both decent walkabouts.  OK, if we throw in Alaska (except for 3 months, mostly a frozen wasteland with prospectors, wildlife and rugged settlers ... hmmmm, a miniature Australia - only cold?), the U.S, might be a larger.  Just having a look at the partial map Steven posted gives respect for your Continent's  size, scope and variety of terrain and ecosystems.  Now Texans think they're big, but Texas is definitely smaller than New South Wales.

G'day @Snug Harbor Johnny, thanks for your appreciative text regarding Australia's size and diversity. It is a great place to live, especially in sunny Queensland where I hale from. I must admit, like Alaska, our history does reflect some "prospectors, wildlife and rugged settlers".

Incidentally, I just looked up your profile and can say that the suburb in which we live is adjacent to our own Allenstown!

Thanks again,

:pirate41:Another bullseye. The standard rigging is done and has also pulled the previously crocked mast perfectly straight! I'm happy with the result but am too tired to provide any 'terribly exciting' images of lines between posts and horribly tiny bailey pins (4mm, 3/16")  🧐.  It's been a big day, and not just for the modelling 😴.

Now for the sails!

Thanks to all those who support me along the way. 😁 The last two days have been dedicated to SAILS!

As I didn't want to use the plastic sails supplied in the kit, I had to make my own.

The plastic ones were however a great template.

I cut each one out having a 5mm/1/4" margin around the outside. Don't forget to label each one.

SA2.JPG.2d900a30d11ae588d4bb8be93359dd2c.JPG

Cutting nine cloth sails (made from plain 250 thread cotton) was simple.

I then weathered them with a solution of watered down Vallejo 70.876 Brown Sand Acrylic paint.

Once dry, I had to think about the Decals provided.

SA3.thumb.jpg.590b3d9dad969c37c4cee4c08b119403.jpg

They however were made for plastic not cloth. 😟 So, I had to use this transfer paper.

SA4.thumb.JPG.b559eccf5c6b73acbba9fcdf78ababbe.JPG

After scanning, flipping, printing and ironing on the image, I had my images on the sails.

But I wanted a hem on each sail, and a ballooning shape.

I used PVA glue to make the 5mm/1/4" hem on the back of each sail (obviously), and then soaked each sail with spray starch.

Allowing them to dry overnight in their corresponding plastic cut-out, gave each their desired shape.

SA6.thumb.JPG.e6d432aa27790fa742872fdb4cc8710f.JPG

Thanks to @kirill4 's example, today I decided to glue a Gutterman CA02776 thread around the edge of each sail.

I'm very pleased with the result as I think it sets off each sail perfectly. You be the judge. 👨‍⚖️

SA8.thumb.JPG.fed417a23c1da6cb3a226edf7a0860ef.JPG

Just what I wanted.

Time to add blocks and attach the sails to the yards.

Cheers,              :dancetl6:

Today I had a great day. After I added small loops, lines and blocks to the bottom of most sails, I attached them to their corresponding yards.

SA9.thumb.JPG.65393f847f2208e91ea624532f4c7f28.JPGSA10.thumb.JPG.be9694682186c24b0bc366dd5728fb8c.JPG

Now I have to decide whether I attach the yards and complete the rigging, OR do I finish the work on the shrouds in readiness for their attachment. It all depends on which will leave the least congested area of access. Rigging then shrouds, or shrouds then rigging.   🤔

An item related to Australia ...  a country I'd love to visit (NZ also)  Commercial steam lasted over a decade longer than it did in the U.S. ...

@Snug Harbor JohnnyI remember regularly travelling from Sydney to Canberra on a steam train when I was a little tacker, about 3-9 years old. The dark steam would come in the window when you stuck your head out to see the engine. Great stuff!

Thanks to those who are still with me on this build.          👍👍👍

I have not had too much time today, but I did manage to glue (CA) my previously made shrouds and ratlines to the kit provided shrouds, lanyards and chains. Cutting away the old, attached plastic shrouds was not as difficult as I had expected.  I'm quite happy with the paint job of the sixty-six lanyards considering the small scale of each.

SA11.thumb.JPG.6540890bb311d6ef1b505bd7c0b4c866.JPGSA12.thumb.JPG.9ed1728d74066d948b61c9fd62253f2f.JPG

Now that I have both the sails and shrouds ready to go, I have decided to do the sails before the shrouds because then I should have easy access for doing the rigging. Besides, the shrouds are on the outside of the model and should be easier to add later.

Thanks again for your support.

Cheers,                           🍻

Normaly the schrouds go first.

But if you do the schrouds first, they hinder the application of the running rigging.

Ik ben het helemaal eens Patrick. I would love to be able to answer in Dutch without a translation program, but i would embarrass myself! 😊 As far as the shroud/rigging debate goes, the shrouds are already in one piece so therefore each one only needs fastening to the channel and one place on the mast. I think that will work to my advantage.

Tot ziens,

Prost,                😉

Greetings! It's been a few days, but I have managed to add all the sails as well as complete the rigging for the fore, mizzen and jigger masts. The sails were easy but the 1/100 scale rigging onto minute bailey pins was a real challenge.

I'm pleased that I have left the shrouds till later as they would have made the rigging even more difficult.

Tomorrow, I hope to rig the main sail and may even add the shrouds!  🤯

Thanks again to those who follow and support my efforts.

Cheers,

G'day all and thanks to those who continue to support my build.

That choice of doing the rigging before the one-piece shrouds worked out well.

Because of the 1/100 scale of this ship, it would have almost been impossible to get to the bailey pins if the shrouds were in the way. Adding the self-made shrouds was not an issue as I only had to cut one line on each of the port and starboard sides. I was able to fit in between all other obstacles.

So that you don't get the wrong idea ... I am not recommending this approach for all ship builds, just this one because of the scale and kit provided plastic shrouds. Besides, shrouds are essential for steadying and straightening masts in normal builds.

A nice solution to the problem, Peter. I had a problem with the shrouds on my Great Harry build - though not the same as yours - mine had to do with when I added the deadeyes, as the shrouds had already been made and ratlines added - and I had to find a solution that I wouldn't recommend under normal circumstances, but in that specific case it worked. Horses for courses.
