Hello Tim,  you may want to contact Artesania Latina,  and see if they will send you a replacement,  some companies have been known to replace  messed up parts.

But if not like @Baker says try to furled the sail, that way you don't have to repaint all the sails to make them the same.

Great looking build !   I have this kit, and the first thing i noticed was that life boat..... ( went in search of ) and found the prize.  I think in time the vinyl strips will loose their grip and start to curl.  I've built models where i had to drop the ball on...... But it haunts you, every time you look at the model you see that one area that is not in perspective.   These life boat kits are plank on frame, they have the length you need. Get them at  model expo  type in life boats in the search box. 🙂

Hello Tim,

I would like to recommend to stain them all... now the color of your sails is tooo, tooo  bright for the galleon model... from my point of vew it should be 3-5 times darker in color... You could use stains which used for wood works ... it could be some kind of yellowish green brownish ochre  colors...  even deluted artists oil paints could be used for sails coloring, just find the mix of colors You would like ?conventional artist thiner could be used as welll...

But! first try on some piece of cloth , how it will work and how You like desired effect or not.

Also diluted bitumen laquer , deluted in "white spirit" thiner works very well both  on wood and fabric as well!... this burnt area, try to wash it just by under  water fall and by tooth brush ...  ivory color for the galleon sails ///hm/// I  very doubt it would be suitable color for this period... but it is just my private opinion of couse...

Entire body of your model could stained in a few degree darker than it is presently, it need to be in some kind gomogenised with the sails color ... there are a few fragments from Ab Hoving books about model paintings and picture of galleon from my collection... to clarify what Im talking about of galleon colors ...

All the Best!

Thanks, I agree, but this is for my 86 year old mother, and she expects light sails, so it's more of an aesthetic issue than a historical one.  I will take your advise in for the next model, I wasn't aware they were ever any darker than a tea color.

I actually ditched the vinyl and covered the inside20240919_104618.thumb.jpg.1a0e60cb6c8eb2a46ed10b19a2228ecf.jpg with mahogany strips, matching the hull of the ship.  I think the results are better.

Good day Tim,

I understood now your choice of the sails bright color :)))

You could try some acrylic paints to hide that burnt area, but again, first try on some piece of fabric, how it works, not straight on the model...

Just for information, as far as I know, for securing boat on deck, lashing must be setted in different way, it should run from board to board over the boat,  but it never fitt to cross the boat in diagonal patern, like You shown...

All the best !

Kirill

Success.  I managed to find a paint that closely matched the existing tint of the sails. Repeated misting of the burnt area, and a final misting of all of the sails got me to a satisfactory match while covering the problem area. I re-stretched/starched the sail with the issue, and re-dried it.  I think the results look good.  I cleaned up any overspray with a q-tip soaked in acetone. 20240919_160749.thumb.jpg.e99b2623111520fdd2d52ba12a2c8563.jpg

I am currently building the Mayflower from Model Shipways same scale and amazed at the differences. All minor but different non the less. Nice work

I am building the Trumpeter 1/70 (?) plastic kit of the Mayflower.  The designers of that kit have the Main Deck gratings shifted to starboard. It is far different!
