I previously posted that Lego was releasing its own version of the Endurance:

I told my wife about it and she actually put it on my Christmas list. That was a nice surprise under the tree. It's been a while since I've had to help my boys build their Legos, though my job was usually finding parts for them. My boys also bought me a Model Shipways Syren. Another nice surprise. I think now I have about five years of models to build.

My wife told me this morning that she tried ordering it from Lego on the day it was released but it quickly sold out online. It was sold out at one of the Lego stores in Nashville but she saw that there were some at the other Lego store. They wouldn't hold it for her. She said she went to that Lego store on Cyber Monday (and she never goes to the mall) after we returned from visiting family over Thanksgiving. There was a line out the door and they were only letting someone in after someone left. She saw two Endurance models remaining on the table near the front door. While waiting in line, one couple in the store was eyeing one up, another almost grabbed one, and the people behind her said they were planning to grab one if they could get inside. She was able to get one of the last two before they sold out. Over the Black Friday week the Endurance came with a free gift of the Shackleton Lifeboat at a larger scale.

I hope it's okay to do a build log on a Lego set. I'm guessing I'm not going to run into problems with misaligned parts, poor instructions, and broken masts. And there should be far less sanding. And it'll probably take me 2% of the time it takes to do a simple wooden ship model. It's a nice thing to build while watching some football or movies with the family in the living room. It's Christmas Day, so it's two football games today on Netflix and maybe a movie tonight.

Hi there, I picked up an Endurance, too, and was considering doing a build log for fun when I thought I'd check and make sure no one else had already started, since it probably doesn't need duplication (nice to provide a record of the build, but not much room for customization). So maybe I won't do my own log but just follow yours.

It's definitely a gorgeous kit. I'm extremely jealous that you got a lifeboat, as online they were gone by dawn the first day (sales started at midnight) and judging by online reactions there are a LOT of angry people out there who felt cheated that Lego didn't make nearly enough lifeboats to go along with the Endurance and are claiming they have no plans to make more. If I had known that (the marketing said they were available for a three-day peroid) I might have set an overnight alarm. So please enjoy that little kit for me and all the others who weren't so lucky.

Have fun in the build!

EDIT: I meant to thank you for posting about this in the first place, as that's how I found out about it. Polar exploration history is definitely a niche interest for me and I've read quite a bit on the subject. My wife has even seen the real James Caird in person, and we have a friend who is deeply involved in the US Antarctic research program (they also got a kit). Thanks for bringing it to my attention in time to order one for Christmas!

Starting on the Endurance. 28 bags of parts plus an envelope of sails and a thick instruction book.

The book has 6 pages (in English, French, and Spanish) on the Endurance, its voyage, and the discovery of its wreckage.

I will certainly be following along on this one. I wasn’t aware that LEGO made ship models, what a wonderful gift. Have fun with the build!!

Wait until you seen the Lego Titanic: over 9000 pieces and 54" (135 cm) long.

Given the massive demand for this Endurance kit, I'd love it if Lego decided to keep doing heritage ships. I'm up to bag 12 on my Endurance and it's an absolutely wonderful project.

That is incredible. I love the fact that they depicted the inside of the machines and all the decks. What a fantastic model to build.

We've finished ours, and it's been really cool to see how Lego has adapted so many pieces from other kits to produce surprisingly good feature on this one. There are a lot of really well thought-out details.

I think the supports for the rails at the bow were from a robot figurine (maybe a droid from a Star Wars kit).

It’s been interesting to see ways its build is sometimes similar and sometimes very different from a wooden model ship.

A lot less sanding.

My brother has had several LEGO Techniks models over the years and he would send me pictures of the instruction pamphlets (he built racing cars predominately). I was amazed at just how much work went into one of those kits, and this one is no different. I just saw "Bag 14" in this post and was pretty shocked. She is coming along nicely.
