This was an abandoned kit for sale on EBay. It appears to have been abandoned after a planking attempt. As you can see from the pictures it has broken and missing parts. After a very low offer it was accepted. The kit arrived 2 days ago. After cataloging the contents it appears to have a broken false keel with a section missing. Most other parts are with the kit. The attempted planking will require some filling. The deck planking was done well but the color and vanish is atrocious. Any suggestions on correcting it short of sanding it down 1/32” and replanking it  will be highly appreciated. Since numerous Bluenose histories are on MSW I will only post the limited history that’s is on the front of the box.

I found the kit is still for sale by Premier Ship Models.IMG_2901.thumb.png.1ccd528b0c7421db53292dd7cb7f942a.png

I first started the repair of the false keel which went well. I used where the keel was punched out as a template and made a pattern which I glued to a piece of basswood. I then trimmed it on the disc sander and glued it to the broken part .IMG_2912.thumb.jpeg.7afc2b82d0c067da7716cd91dabc07e8.jpegIMG_2911.thumb.jpeg.28dc010e740926de9f3801820bbaccf4.jpeg

Correcting and finishing the planking progressed smoothly. The planking by the previous owner will need filling in some areas. I use Model Lite and modeling paste for fill before sanding.  I also fabricated a dry dock to hold the hull after planking.IMG_2928.thumb.jpeg.4818b6d730896ae346dd05386d2de2dc.jpeg

When I look at the decking it drives me crazy. It appears to have a plastic coating. I plan on covering it with 0.5 x 4mm teak decking.

Finally almost to the rigging stage. I think I am going to rig it with standing rigging vs sails. I feel that sails will take away from the deck detail. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Great work so far in refurbishing and continuing the build of this Bluenose, RVB!  Looks really nice!  The Bluenose was without question my favorite ship to build (to-date).  It looks like you are already a seasoned model ship builder, but I would encourage you to look at upgrading your Amati kit-provided blocks, deadeyes and rope to better quality products as you get to the masts and rigging stages.  And yes, I left my Bluenose without sails, as well.  Although I fully realized that the Bluenose was a celebrated racing ship and, thus, should have its sails displayed in full glory, I really like showing off all the rigging so chose mine without the sails.  Besides the fact that I suck at making good sails... 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️  Continued success on your Bluenose, sir!

Thanks Gregg

i just ordered model shipways brass belaying pins vs the Amati ones supplied.

I also have beautiful blocks to use in the rigging. I agree with you that builds look nicer with standing rigging vs sails which hide detail.
By the way I have the hull of model shipways  USS Constitution almost finished. I need to get back to it. This may sound crazy but I have 2 or 3 boats presently in progress. I am sure there a lot of us modelers in the same position (Some finished Some not)

Enjoy your model shipways USS Constitution build. It is quite the undertaking.
