USS Constitution by lambsbk – Revell – 1/96 - PLASTIC – With Fiber Optics

Recommended Posts

Hi Lambsbk, hope you are enjoying Boston. I've been aboard Conny a couple of times, and will be in Boston in the next few months on our RV Trek through New England. I would like to know more about the behind the scenes tours of her when you have time to explain it. I would like to do that. I'm also former Navy, so I've always had some special treatment when aboard her. Are you going to be able to get to Mystic, Connecticut while you are there? It's not real far and that is where the Morgan is moored. Anyway, enjoy your trip.

Thanks Kim and Dan. John it does not look like I will be getting that far south although that would be nice. I know you are looking forward to that visit given your current build. I'm getting ready now to head to the wharf and for the Connie visit...

Enjoy your tour, I'm envious, I look forward to the same in a month or two.  This will be an extended trip, so I'll be able to see both.  Have fun and eat some lobsters!

I just got back from my tour on the Connie. You guys have to try this - Henry is a GREAT tour guide. The tour was way above my expectations. Thanks Henry for your time, your knowledge, and your friendship. I learned so much. It is going to take me days to digest it all. :)

I'll get some pics up soon.

I think you owe Henry a Cannoli from Mike's as well...!

Glad to know you made it aboard and had a great tour!  Looking forward to your pictures..

(Oh... and I hope your anniversary went well too!)

I doubt you can fit it in, but a visit to the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem will reward you with the incredible Hull model AND the beautiful series of paintings by Corne of the Guerriere battle.

I'm sure the town was a bit glum after the Bruins debacle.

Make sure to grab a bowl of chowdah while your in town.

Oh, and no ship that's not crewed by the damned and captained by a man so evil that Hell itself spat him back out could possibly have black sails, therefore couldn't possibly be any other ship than the Black Pearl. Is that what you're telling me?  B)  ;)  :D

Hey There...Henry...(Kim Here !!) Thanks for those pics...!!! What really caught my attention, was that you had said 'Friends from Rhode Island'...Both of my parents were from Rhode Island...(Providence, & Rumford), my friend !!! and it's always great to hear from, or about someone from  the New England area, regardless of the relationship or connection method...!!! ( I haven't been back there in 40+ some years, and wanted to go back & visit with my Dad, before he passed away a year ago on New Years Eve-didn't make it into 2012)...but anyways, Thanks Agin, Mate !!! Blessings to Ya !!! Kim.

Hi Henry, thank you for your gracious offer.  I accept.  It will probably be in September or so when I get there.  We have a wedding in Philadelphia to attend in August, then we'll work our way to Boston and on to Maine.  I'll give you pleanty of notice.  That appears to be an outstanding tour and I really look forward to it.  Thanks for the pictures.

Just an update. I started to modify the bulwarks by removing the pathetic nibs supplied for the breeching by Revell. I had a 'great' idea of using a hot knife to cut through them and then Dremel with a small sanding wheel to finish the cut. I was VERY careful with the knife because I knew I could not get it close to the other parts. But careful wasn't good enough and it touched a bit of the spar deck attachment area. ARGHHH...! So now I have to repair that. Thankfully it is not beyond repair. After that frustration on the port side I decided to just use tree snips to trim the nibs...why do the best ideas only come after disaster? They worked so much better and the rest of the build did not have to suffer. Now on to the clean up and repair...

Sorry for your mishap but it's great to see you are back at the workbench.  I'm sure that in the end you'll never see the effects of the hot knife.

I love those nippers.  I have two pairs that I use all the time.  Easy to just nip off some strip styrene and then sand to finished size.

Hope you are having fun.

Welcome back...!!! I may be a bit ahead of things here, but I wanted to add a little note...(I was questioned today about methods, and wanted to pass this post along to you !)...about 'Sails' (if you're adding them, or not...)...'Hairdressing the Sails'...Just a suggestion here, if I may..!!?? An old trick that I've used for years that has always worked out very well, and has also stood the test of time, (in a lot of years, now...!!!)...When your going for the appearance of a 'weathered' and 'billowed' sail that would give the look of being at sea with moderate, to heavy winds...and especially if you're doing cloth sails, (regardless of the type of material you're using, such as muslin, or just regular 'sheet' cloth), I have in fact used the 'Fan' Method' (the 'fan' being an adjustable strength hair dryer ) after giving the sails a very slight spray of warm water, from an old spray bottle, that allows a 'mist' spray, and then (here's the 'trick' !!) from behind the sails, as if being 'the wind' itself, give s slight mist spray with a good brand ( I will suggest TRESemme') Hair Spray...!!! ( an all day humidity resistance type) for really good hold when it all dries, in a very short period of time...Hair spray alone, appx. 3 minutes total, and if possible using a 'soft blow' hair dryer, set to LOW HEAT...Hair Spray with WET sails, appx. 15 minutes, with a hair dryer, and up to 35-45 minutes without, allowing for additional 'molding' with fingers (be careful though, it's really sticky !!) or preferably with moderately swift strokes of a medium sized paint brush...but again, remember its really sticky !! The overall final appearance is really satisfying, and the 'trick' will always bring am 'Oh Really ??' look from those you pass it along to...Best of luck...try it on a couple of 'sample sails, for 'kicks and grins' 'til you're satisfied with your 'skills' at 'hairdressing' the sails...!!! Blessings, Kim...!!!

Also, rewinding back to the 'Pictures' on the walls of the Captains quarters...( I'll forward pictures, shortly...) I was able to (thanks to you're work, and methods !!) make 'Micro-Miniature' 'Photo-Pictures' that will actually FIT the FRAMES on the walls in his quarters...!!!  I was amazed that it was possible...I was simply attempting to 'experiment' with an attempt...! Again...Welcome back...!!!!  Kim

And, Last of all... about your 'knife burn' tragedy...If you need any replacement 'Spar' or 'Gun' deck parts, or pieces, I do have 2-3 spares of each (complete) available, if necessary, at no charge of course, if needed...Just let me know, Okay...??!!  ( I'm done now...!!! )  Kim

Thanks all. Fortunately the spar deck only took a small hit amid ship. I have already cleaned the melted plastic off and now need to put a little plastic putty to work. I think the final reshape will be ok. I'll test fit the spar deck until it is right again. I'll get some pics up this weekend.

Kim: thanks for the sail idea. I have not gotten that far ahead in my build thinking yet but I'll reference this page when I do.

A couple of pics below. I am experimenting with the bulwark ringbolts. Those of you who have thickened the bulwark will have no problem with this...but drilling out the inner bulwark without the thickened effect is tricky. Not much room for error and I am sure I will some external repair to do after the drilling and placement of the bolts.

The Spar Deck damage.

After the nibs were removed I really liked the clean look of the bulwark. Up close it may not look so great but overall I like it.

I made a jig to align the cannons, scrape down to plastic on the Gun Deck for gluing the carriages, and for ring bolt positioning.

The prototype breeching gun is complete. I think I will modify the seizing on the remaining guns. Although it is tied correctly I don't like the look. I think I will simplify the next one and double seize the line (it will be more correct by doubling).

The breeching looks very good. One suggestion would be to make sure to clip the excess line on the seizing at the ship's side. You do not want any excess rope hanging off there. Other than that it is fine. Good work.

Russ: I assume you mean the small nibs of thread closest to the ring bolt pointing toward the gun. I agree. I don't like how it turned out. The rest of the guns are going to have a simpler seizing knot - for looks. Since it has to carry no weight I see no reason to secure it with an 'ugly' properly tied knot. Thanks.

BTW, I am enjoying watching your schooner come along. She looks great.
