Hello!

This past week, I finished all the remaining rigging on the model. (I hope!!!)

On the lower mizzen yard, I finished the yard braces. As with all the other rigging on the ship, I used the Vasa Museum plans that were made in the early 1980's. So with this in mind, I tied the mizzen yard braces back to the railing at the stern, instead of using the Corel plans (which show the brace lines going forward from the yard)

Next, I finished the lower mainsail yard braces.

Then I finished the lower mainsail sheets.

The sheet lines go thru the block (at the left arrow), then thru the large block on the 2nd photo, thru a hole into the ship.

Finally, for the lower mainsail, I finished rigging the tacks.

In the photo see the arrow to the right. Then the line goes behind the figurine and onto the cleat on top of the railing.

Continuing on:

Next I installed the foresail sheet lines. The lines go thru the block (see left arrow)

Then down thru one of the triple block assembly (built into the railing).

Now the foresail tack lines. Attached to the sail (see right arrow on photo)

Thru the hole under the beak and back into the cleats on the bow railing.

The last lines rigged are the lower spritsail sheets. This line comes from the corner of the sail, thru an eyelet on the deadeye platform to a block. Then another line goes from the block, into the triple railing block and finally onto the cleat.

Thanks Michael!

I am 12 miles north of Boston, so we will only get a dusting from the storm. Most of the damage will be further south, NYCity to Philly and DC.

I think we dodged a bullet this time!

Hello,

The last item to finish up on my Vasa model was the stern lantern.

After looking around, I ended up selecting a Corel lantern I found on the Internet.

This is how it looked when it came.

The first thing I did was to disassemble the pieces and remove the red windows and the ornamentation around the stem.

Next I drilled a hole into the stern post of the Vasa and did a trial fit of the lantern.

Now I gold leafed the lantern to match the figurines

Continuing on with the lantern:

I bought some thin styrene sheets and I cut out windows that matched the size and shape of the red ones that came with the lantern.

Next, using some plastic window screen, I glued the screen to the windows using the Testor clear glass glue. (Thank you Mark for suggesting this glue!!)

I cut away the excess screen and glued the windows to the lantern.

Finished lantern mounted onto the stern with the supports

Well thats it on the ship! It's been a long a fun journey.

My next step is to finish the base for the case. I will begin to stain and finish the base and assemble it.

I will post some photos soon.

Thanks again for the "likes" and the visits to the log!

looks great.

do you have the part number from Corel for this nice lantern?

Hi Jan,

I ordered the Corel Lantern from "cornwallmodelboats.co.uk"

If you go to their Web site you should find it.

Reference # AMNF022  CF22 Conical Period Stern Lantern with Side Bracket 30MM

My cost was 8.43 British pounds plus 2.02 pounds shipping

I hope this helps!

Wonderful job with this difficult ship to build   . The lantern really finishes it off nicely.

Mark

Hi Mark!

Thanks for your help and input into the glue and acetate ideas. That all led me in the right direction! I love that glue. It makes for nice window panes.

Micheal,

The mystery of your log name is solved!

Great thinking on your part!

I still have my @.mac.com email!

I wished I kept my original Macintosh SE from the 80's . Oh well!

Hello,

I have been working on and finished up the base of the case for my Vasa model.

In a previous log post, I uploaded some photos of the pieces of the base I made.

Here they are again in the 1st 2 photos.

post-951-0-78166000-1455841676_thumb.jpg

post-951-0-27072100-1455841701_thumb.jpg

I stained them and then put on a few coats of Polyurethane.

post-951-0-44129800-1455841726_thumb.jpg

On the plywood board, I wrapped a large piece of black felt and stapled it to the back side.

post-951-0-14861500-1455841740_thumb.jpg

Now I fitted the felt covered plywood into the slots of the end pieces, glued the whole thing together and held it together with some clamps until it dried.

post-951-0-93141700-1455841765_thumb.jpg

On the backside, I screwed on some angle braces for extra protection and I will add some felt pads  on the 4 corners, so I don't scratch the furniture it will sit on.

Yesterday, I ordered the 3/16" thick plexiglass that will ever and protect the model.

Next step is to make a name plate stand and have a nameplate made.

Thanks for visiting the log,

Frank

Nice work Frank!  It's a God-Send having a router and router-table set-up isn't it?  :)

Thanks for your comments George!

I actually went to the Peobody Senior Center here north of Boston. They have some great equipment there and many knowledgable , helpful, and fun people who assisted me in making the trim pieces!
