HMS Beagle by maurino - Mamoli

Recommended Posts

Hi ! bluenose here. I have the Mamoli kit also. Something you should be aware of. The Beagle as represented by Mamoli as the ship Darwin sailed on is based on the ship as it was before 1831 when he sailed aboard it. After some research and purchasing the book by Karl Heinz Marquardt. Conway Maritime Press. You will see that there are major differences in the Mamoli kit and the Beagle that Charles Darwin sailed on. Most importantly the canons on the Darwin ship were below decks and not on the top deck. This kit will require some extensive kit bashing to get it correct. So before you spend any more time on this kit please purchase the book to see what you are up against. I will still do the build but I need some more experience to do it justice. Good luck.

Hello bluenose here. After researching my new Marquardt book more closely I was wrong about the guns being on a lower deck. They just appear so because of the high gunwales. They are in fact on the upper deck. What faked me out was the high gunwales. Sorry about that.

Hello Mauro!

Is there room for another to follow along?  A little while ago I read a review on this kit and have been interested in it ever since and can't wait to see what you do with it!

I like the idea of the wood moulding for reinforcements too.  That is very clever!

It's always good to see builders using whats at hand. It shows you don't have to go to a store front to get the job done. Nice fix.

Hello Bluenose, the imagination often gives us effective solutions with little expense -

I decided to self-produce the strips of the second planking, I bought it from a carpenter a scrap of veneer, which I cut into pieces of about 30 cm. Then, on one side only, I brushed glue diluted with water so as not to make the pulping wood during cutting. Using a paper trimmer I cut the wood (oak) in strips of 3 mm.

I finished the planking and I almost finished painting the hull, at the same time I'm building the cutter of the brig. The kit provides only 2 boats metal, it will build 7 (as in the original) using very thin strips of wood. Not sure of being able to sell all the boats on board, maybe I'll have to discard some.
