Hooks for gun carriage rigging

I am in the process of making the hooks for my gun carriage rigging. Now that i am about 25% done forming them I suddenly started thinking (a dangerous thing thinking) Should the point of the hook be perpendicular to the eye or parallel? My thought is that with the point of the hook at right angles to the eye the block will lay straighter. Will it effect my rigging at all? Am I over thinking this?

Wish I knew!  - I had just come across the photo when looking at some pictures some time ago.  It looks suitably 'authentic' and not just some sort of touristy reconstruction.  It seems to be the only example I've seen that is contrary to the perpendicular hook.
