    Hi Guys
    Diana the final photos.
I have managed at last to take and crop and re-size the final photo`s. Just under the 3 years to build, she has been a pleasure, although not without some difficulty`s, I am fairly pleased with the result, in hindsight some things I would have done a little bit differently, but not many, I might not have virtually scratch built the ships boats if the hull kits had been around, but this has lead me to be building another set of boats (scratch) at 1/48 as an in between project.

    Gaff & Booms
Time to add the Spanker boom and the Gaff boom, again the supplied rigging drawings are sketchy and difficult to follow,so I decided to rig the booms as per L Petersons R P S M which is my rigging bible I highly recommend this book which can be  purchased for around £25.The booms are now both rigged and the last of the braces which rig into the booms have also been added. One thing that will to be attended to is re-tensioning some of the rigging, but I will do this when the rigging is completed, the only rigging remaining are the tac sheets, and then just the dummy rope coils and a few odds and ends.
Next job ships boats or the stand.

Diana as she is now starting to look the real deal

Half of the main deck guns are now fitted and the ones that can be seen are fully rigged, I used my normal method for making the rope coils, and lightly rubbed the completed gun on sand paper to give a slight flat on the bottom of the wheels to give a larger gluing area, then fix them with a generous amount of thick cyno, the last thing you want is to later  knock one loose when the top deck is on.

    Reworked quarter deck gun ports

I first cut out the bulwark as necessary and laminated some wood to the right thickness, and the glued and pinned it on to the cut out section, I then re-cut the gun ports and added the rails, and the trim and when all done repainted, I did one side first, and then the other, a real pain to do but it had to be done, I could not have left it as it was as it would have botherd me. Over all the repair is not to bad and when the cannons are fitted and rigged you will not see it, if you did not know it was there, and the one good thing was the beech top rail did not break so that looks as good as before and its the part that the eye catches. Also all the channels, dead eyes and links are now complete and painted. Next the fore and quarter deck fittings and guns.

The gun deck planking has been completed, sanded and varnished, I think it looked its best sanded and wiped down with wet wipes and dried, but to leave it unvarnished would not be practical, to easy for it to be marked spilt on and alike during the rest of the build. In the photos it does look a bit mottled but does not look so in real life. I must admit to being pleased with the deck and well worth the replacing of the timber and the top and butt-planking pattern with the wide planking near the deck hatches and the 3mm planking in-between. One thing I did not add was treenails, I think at this scale you are right on the edge of them being added or not, I did try them on a test piece and decided against two reasons firstly I did not know where they would be on the top and butt planks and secondly they looked a bit crowded on the 3mm width ones.

Next jobs plank the inner gun deck bulwarks and balsa fill between the first few bow and stern frames.

    HMS Pegasus completed
Well Pegasus is finished, its been a three year build a bit longer that I anticipated, but we did move house during that time.

How did it all go, the quality of the kit was very good and I recommend it without any reservations. Looking back on the build there were no real problem in producing this fine model, for she really in a handsome ship. The most daunting part of the build was for me was undoubtedly the rigging, not the standing rigging but the running rigging, mainly because there is an awful lot of it, but in the end it was not that bad, the key to this I think was leaving access to the centre of the deck which made tying off the cordage ends ok, I will say one thing, I did use a fair bit more cordage than came with the kit.

The most difficult part of the build was probably coppering the hull, but it does look great when finished. I also think fully rigging the cannons and adding the rope coils were well worth the extra time and effort.

Final thoughts a great kit, makes up into a super model but not for the beginner, I hope this log helps other Pegasus/Fly builders.

    Hi Chris.
It looks like you have only bevelled the lower part of the frames the upper parts will need bevelling as well, I would also highly recommend filling between the first few frames bow and stern with balsa, this helps to get the overall shape and makes planking easier. Also check the transom is right it is very tricky as the other Diana builders have found.
Good luck with her she is a great project.

The hull has now been sanded down, not to bad a job, but I did have to wait for a fine day as the shipyard superintendent said it must be done outside (she had just dusted and vacuumed). There are a few very slight gaps plank to plank and if you were to paint the hull they would best be filled and sanded but as the hull will be copper plated there is no need, I also chipped a bit off a plank at the top at the stern you can just see it in the photo, I will sort it later. Planks are in soak for the main wale, after the main wale is on and has been painted, and the insides of the gun ports framed, those that will have lids that is, are done, inside of the bulwarks can be painted and the planking finished up to the bulwark.

Great fun to do, and a good relearning curve, having not built a model for many years, and I am well pleased with the end result. The kit I would I recommend it, 100% yes, great quality materials super plans and drawings, plenty of wood, both planking and dowel, cord as well, the only short fall some 3mm blocks and eyes but is there anything perfect.   I can now open the box of my next model HMS Pegasus in earnest, not sure whether to do a build log for her?

Hi Guys thanks for the comments and best wishes. My knee surgery went ok, only in hospital for four days, but it is extremely painful so I have not yet done any more work on Diana, Sharpe knifes and alike mixed with a fair bit of morphine are not the best mix.

    Hi Mihai
I did use the brush/pen on all the decking laid so far and I am very pleased with the result, and its having the benefit of it being faster as well over my normal method of laying black cotton thread between each plank not very practical on the top & butt planking.

    Hi Mort
I did not use a jig for the top and butt planks I just cut and measured each one from 80mm length of 5mm maple (as in the photo)

I cut a few at this standard size and laid the ones that just fit together nice and trimmed as necessary others, or cut one to give a snug fit and carried on to the bow and stern cutting each one as required, tapering them to give the straight line were the 3mm planking starts.

The stern seats were added and the winch and davit made, the davit will just be stored on board as it cannot be in place with the rudder mounted, the rudder has also be made, but I will alter the arm,the wash strakes have been added to the hull and the oar slots cut,the boat has been masked up and sprayed with quite a few coats of primer rubbed down after every two coats. Spray painting the boats will be a new venture as I have invested in a small compressor and air brush, and it will be a learning curve, but so far after just doing the primer, I am well pleased with the results, the main thing learnt so far is just how thin you need to get the paint (acrylic) to get a good result.

The main and mizzen top masts are now in place, and have all their shrouds and ratlines added, phew, I am glad they are all finished and that I split it up this way, as it did make the ratlines a lot less tedious to tie,I will now most likely add as much of the standing rigging that I can before fitting the tagallants masts.
I have also included some photos of Diana with Pegasus and The lady Nelson.

I have added some photos of my Diana`s stern from point you are up to now, then forward to where the stern is nearly completed, there are a lot more steps from where you are now to that point, but part you are most apprehensive over is covered up by the stern galleries and cabin.
