  1. I have this pair of "photo attached" and they have different strengths and they're so, so, but the part that hold the lens has worn out so the lenses wobble and move making it very difficult to see. I like that they don't protrude into my work as much as a traditional visor system that stick out and into your work, but I'd like something of a lot more quality and if possible more options on the X powers. Suggestions? I'd spend up to $150 were they seriously high quality.
  2. I figure anyone that can build something like that after a half bottle of cognac has GOT to know what he's doing.
  3. Well, call this one solved. I found purchased this: Thanks!
  4. Well if a Talosian thinks it's a good product, I had to order one myself. We'll see if the U.S. post is any better than Australia’s.
  5. I'm looking for plans to make a serving machine. Otherwise, if anyone knows who make them well, and at a reasonable price.
  6. Is that similar to the drop plank shown in the black and white photo? See what I've gotten myself into?
  7. Can you point out where these jogglers are at? I think I'm on target with where the stealers will go.
  8. I used that, and the fan template and compared. The fan template is great but spreadsheet or template, I can't get an exact measurement from the calipers. I split the difference, miss by a mile and try to do better the next time. I don't dare toss too many mis cuts... I've already asked model-expo for several packages. It's been about 3 weeks and I just finished band A on both sides. Between 3 or 4 hours a night. Or is it 3 hr, 59 min. on MSW and 1 minute on the ship?
  9. LOL! It's a double edged sword, for me... Truth be told, I survived the 80's. Well, actually, I did some serious brain cell population control from the late 70's to 01/01/1999. Rather a variety of substances can be abused, too. Now I'm on a whole new set of drugs for manic depression. Think maybe there's a relationship there, somewhere? I stole my dads favorite saying. Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most. A while back, for a reason I can't remember, I decided to do some long division. Or try at least. I failed. I then asked google. It had the answer, but I still couldn't figure it out. I'm a retired network engineer. I retired because I can't keep up with all the changes anymore. I'm only 51. Watch this. Stuff I've used for 30 years... 10111011.10011010.0010111.01100000 is binary for an Internet Protocol address of 187.154.23.96. This I can do in my head. Base 16 math. Ffec48 = 16,722,168. That I can do on paper. And takes me a while:) 768 / 3? long division on paper? forget it. Like I say. Even after googling. Brain is no longer absorbent. I SERIOUSLY appreciate the advice and suggestions and yep, I pick and choose. And screw it up and enjoy it.
  10. Since it's my first ship, I'm sure I'm not up to getting too technical. I'll be happy if their are no major bumps or bulges, and I have enough wood to finish the job. There is a HELL of a lot of information here and out there that is just too much for this "old" man to take in. A little at a time, please, 'ya know? Thanks!
  11. So THAT'S what they mean by "over my head". I thought you said tap, not taper, which I did during their overpass. I be-deviled the sextants with a booby trap to sit the twins a head of the foremast, but we had a lot of fun on the trapezoid, until their boring old dad found out I'm a deviant, and pronounced me come - not within a radius of the dangerous and hairy cross-sections, lest the curviture of my ever expanding belly suddenly decrease... At the expense of my life span. I seriously appreciate the support, but I'm still trying to remember which side they store the port on.
  12. Thanks. I'm doing one strake on one side, then the same strake on the other. I think for the next band, I'll do the whole band on one side and see if I learn anything that I can use on the other. I'm enjoying this. Just think. I expect rigging will make planking look like childs play.
  13. I think there's something kinky going on in my mail box. I get 1 or 2 bills, a couple magazines I never asked for, and suddenly I have more bills than I can afford. And so far the hull is fare. Fair? Some of the planks just didn't lay down right. Perhaps because I'm tapering vertically. Nothing a little wood filler won't cure.
  14. Just how did you hold the plank in place? At 3/32", it's so bloody flexible. That's where my mind is stuck at. Or should I say I can't get past? Planking so far...
  15. Oh yeah... The piece that goes at an agle to get the taper I need? I sanded that a little so the planks can be "pinched" in the vice.
  16. These planks are only 3/32" and over (various) distances I have to half that. I can't hold nor can I figure out how to clamp the straight edge. Took a couple of larger strips of bass wood I found at the hobby store and some strips I thought good for this job and made the jig. Problem, I need 12 planks, total and the're all different lenghts. So my jig is much longer than needed. I place plank one, the end that needs to be the smallest is to the far left of the jig. This piece is the shortest. I can set the plank tight in the jig and the taper in size runs the correct distance. Do that again for the other side. Next piece is longer but the taper needs to be the same. Now I don't know how much wood I've taken off by sanding on the jig. Is it even straight any more? So I take a layer of skin off using the table saw and move the plank farther to the right to get my width back. I use a clamp to hold the right most of the plank at the height I need to mantain my taper. Dunno if you can see the vertical taper. I heard it help with the "klinker" effect. Certainly doesn't do a thing for my 99 GMC Sierra "klunker".
  17. JPett, nice looking project. And I like the planking pdf, thanks a bunch. I wonder how a chalk like would work to mark each band. dgbot. Can you show me a pic of that? I can't imagine how to clamp a 3/32" plank to a straight edge. Especially if one end is to have only 3/64" held down. Again, my lack of experience rears my sexy head. I want to make sure we're talking about the same thing. Clamping in place would indeed be ideal, because I surely can't hold it in place myself. But I tried. And I always get the bump you see in the 2nd pic because it always moves.
  18. I've laid the planks down on every part of that ship. Far as I can tell there'll be no dips or bumps. I did sand too far a number of times, but wood filler is getting to be my friend. And speaking of measuring planks, that's what brings me here today. The width of these planks are varying from .098 to .104. Supposed to be 3/32, but they're closer to 7/64. Nothing else in the kit that comes closer unless I go to a greater thickness. I imagine I'd do more damage than good trying to adjust it. I'm trying to select planks that are around .101 and that seems to be the average. Anyway, reason I'm here this time... I need to reduce 3/32" planks to half that over a 6" length. I seriously don't want to sand that. I tried pinching the planks between 2 pcs of wood and clamping it in my vice... My belly chance of that!
  19. JPett, I'm not clear on what you're talking about. I now satisfied with my faring job, you're right, sanding too much seems to be no problem. A small dose of wood filler and problem solved. I'm ready to start planking now. Here's what I'm doing. BHD H is the widest part of the ship and BHD is the stem. The wale to the 1st batten is .75", while it's .58 at the stem. Difference of .17. I divided that by the 8 BHD's and come up with an average reduction between BHD's needs to be .021. Or am I shooting, smoking or snorting?
  20. LOL! That'll stick with me. Is there a part of the ship I could use a Mloody Mary to make easier? So far they're making things difficult.
  21. Sometimes I manage to learn from others mistakes. Other time I learn from a good illustration.
  22. Sorry if my terminology is incorrect, I have to google and write down what's port and what's starboard. BAD memory combined with lack of experience. At any rate, I'm starting at what I call the "top", just below the gun ports and sweeps, and working towards the keel. The plans absolutely do NOT match the measurements described. I'm planning to use the garboard plank to either take up slack, or make room for my - I assume - many mistakes. Since I just bought one of those temper-pedic memory foam mattresses for my wife, I'm hoping many of my mistakes this year will be forgiven. Like spending so much time here in the man cave on the computer and my ship:)
  23. Thank you very much. I have a little fairing to do yet, but I'm looking forward to planking. I understand it can be tedious. I can't imagine that. Challenging, yes, it seems to me that each plank must be a project unto itself. But I gotta tell ya'. Flower Mound Texas? I think of Dallas, cowboys, cattle, BEEF! Flowers? Flower Mound? I live in Central California and even MY neighborhood is called Bridle Ridge!
