Robin, you are right, it is a magazine. I am not very familiar with the internal rooms yet...

Siggi, you helped a lot, thank you! Will build an english version, with a smooth line of the lower deck clamp

The dashed lines generally mean proposed alterations for RN service, and they were usually done, if time permitted. If the alterations had been made before the ship's plan had been been completed, then those lines would have been drawn solid. American, French and privateer internal accommodations were usually not up to Royal Navy standards, especially powder magazines. Siggi's right. If you want to make her the American Privateer with the name "Oliver Cromwell" under her stern windows, she will be a different ship internally, than if you build her as "HMS Beaver's Prize".

I don't know about tile magazine flooring, but historian Peter Goodwin reminds us "The doors and bulkheads were often lined with lead, or later with copper, to prevent sparks", in his "Construction and Fitting of the English Man of War". Perhaps the floor was sheathed to. It also prevented water and rat damage. Privateers often didn't have the time, or the extra money, to build such extra niceties.

Well once I figured the story all those lines were telling me it got a whole lot easier. The starboard went a lot smoother, and I was done in about 2 hours. Now on with the hawse timber, then glue them in after finish sanding the fore and aft faces of the frames...

And again please let me know if you see that I made a mistake or mistakes. This Cant making is a first for me..

    Matt.s.s.
Please excuse this wordy reply but it might be helpful for someone just stating out like me.
Welcome to my struggles with the Ben Latham..  I am currently working on the wheel house and preparing to finish up the aft railing.  I caution you to not necessarily do all the things I have done.  I have made many mistakes and have corrected most but the ship you see in the log is a variation of the actual ship.  Here are some of the mistakes I made

    1. I wish I had taken more time to select the hull planking from the wood furnished in the kit.  It seems to vary quite a bit in thickness and width. I will seek out a better grade of wood on my next build.
    2. When planking the deck, I darkened the edge of each plank to simulate caulking, but left too much space between planks(there should be none) I corrected by wiping with HobbyLite filler and then wiping with a very diluted mix of black paint and grey paint wiping off excess.
    3. Made the cabin wrong with hatch at front. I misread location of cabin on deck and did not see my mistake until I had planked around it. I removed it from deck, planked in the gap and glued it over the planking in the correct position.  When you see my next pics you will note that I mounted it backwards so the hatch faces the wheel.  I could have rebuilt the cabin but decided I liked it that way.
    4.  As you may have noted on other forum builds the stern build up is not clearly defined in plans and you just have to wing it by looking at pics of real Latham.
    5. Also when planking the deck, I cut the planks to scale and aligned the butt ends every 3rd plank.  Looks good but if using 1/16x1/16 planks it is not necessary, plus it's tedious gluing that many planks. Next time I'll use longest planks possible and scribe the butt ends with an exact o knife.

I am enjoying this build and am learning so much about modeling and what tools to use. I feel that my next effort will be more professional looking.

    Hi guys,
Oh yes i have been away. First a lot of OT at work, which has not change and will start up again tomorrow. Second trying to catch up with house chores.
But first thing accomplished was take my lady to a movie and lunch. But I did have time to work on my models.
My little Flattie is now completed. So i will be slowly adding pictures and catching up on my reading with all the build logs i am following here. So here are a few. Oh yea thanks Bob for your info. That is the only thing left to do the latch...

Now after completing the working companionway i was pretty much still not happy with the view of the inside. So here is what i did...Now I am happy after all the trouble to get the rope to look right. Now I can see it clearly....

now a little dinner and to bed, cause reporting to work at 230am stinks...

Well in this crazy world we live in. Were employers cut back employees and expect the few to do more then ever before.....All of a sudden I am working 12 to 14 hour days. So no time to mess with my models. Just no time.
So since i finished the companionway I have a total of 19 photos and figured to thin the herd before i post the pictures, but just too plain tired! So here they are and I hope things will settle down soon so i can get back to my enjoyment...

another update on my Flattie bashing using Chapelle's book...
I used the plans to kinda get a guess-timet on how much of the center board went under the fore deck and how much went into the cabin. that way i could come up with a close guess has to the size of the center board trunk...

    Hi All,
Just thought I would add back my Flattie build log that was lost from 1.0..........

    Hello Friends,
Another project of mind will be the Flattie from Midwest. I will be doing a little bashing. But mainly I will be going the INTARSIA(painting with wood) route. I thought I wood push myself by painting with wood. That means to me that I must be very critical with all wood seams and glueing applications. It must be a clean joint and no glue being exposed or I will fail with the Intarsia method.
I decided upon this project for future projects of more difficulty to improve my model building novice skills to a level of clean and crisp joints and assemply. So I will be updating this thread very soon....

    woods that will be used....

    HOLLY, SWISS PEAR, BOXWOOD

My plan is the flooring inside and out will be boxwood...

    decking will be boxwood...
the white painted hull will be painted with holly...
scubbers, rub rail, hatch, cleats, mast collar, trim around the cabin will be swiss pear...

i have decided to show off the cabin. So i will be building a centerboard trunk out of holly and boxwood..cabin benches will be boxwood with a little trim of swiss pear....should make for a nice look...

    mast...boxwood
i think the blocks will be swiss pear...
looking into adding a bowsprit which will be boxwood...

I will be looking real hard at Chapelle' book "American Small Sailing Craft"

Well I have a little update. I am trying to explain my progress with remarks on the pictures themselves. but please if you have any remarks or questions are welcome....
