Hi everyone, at last some more pictures for you. As you can see, the whole framework has now been stained and the bottom deck cut, planked glued and varnished, cabins and bilge on top and beams ready for the next deck.
A couple of thoughts. Firstly despite what some would have us believe plywood does warp, badly!! Also CA glue does not like varnish at all. I must remember not to varnish the bits I have to glue afterwards!!
I find it hard to believe I have put in so many hours with not a lot to show for it all. Still it doesn't matter, it is a challenge and good fun.

Is 'kit bashing' when you get really fed up and smash it all to bits or is it altering the bits that should fit and do not or will not? If it is the latter than a good bash has been had already!.

I always save bits and leftovers. I have found them to be useful so many times!! I know kit manufacturers are not 'over-generous'. In fact I have already had to use some on the present build!!! I should be able to give you some more pics soon. Still dreading the planking!! Oh I am going to need so much help!

Hi all, many thanks for all the comments, I look forward to having a look at your log Captain Al and maggsl_01 I hope I can do the model justice! I have to say it is turning out to be a tricky beast, maybe OcCre are a bit over the top with their detail!! I am hoping to get the lower deck finished  and fitted soon so watch this space!!
Because it is early days I am not sure if there is enough wood supplied to finish the kit in the end, I rather suspect not. It is amazing to me how much wood you get through just with finishes and linings. I am sure the stagecoach I built was easier than this. Never mind I am having fun, just can't believe the time I'm putting in!!!
I will try and post some more pics soon!

I am still waiting for the parts I need from model airways but, in the meantime I have made a start on my 'half' covering of the plane. I can only do so much because otherwise I will not be able to do the cabling that runs though the wings for the ailerons.
Anyway I thought you might like to see how far I have got. he final colour scheme is going to that of 209 squadron RAF from WW1 as flown by Arthur Roy Brown who was credited to an extent with shooting down the Red Baron !

Side bracing complete. I have decided to leave the under fuselage bracing until after I have done the control wires, I think it will give me more space.

I have also attached the tailplane and hope to rig it later today. I kep't  knocking the tail skid off so I have sneakily attached a wire to the pin it rotates on which I hope will keep it in place.

A question for you John. The instructions say you have to brace the control stick to do the wires. How on earth did you do that ?

    Hi Christos

Your model is coming along very well - I particularly like your planking. I agree with everyone else, that painting the wood white is entirely a matter of personal taste. As you know from our previous correspondence, I painted my hull as I thought it tied in with the overall colour scheme. However there were some parts of the model I chose not to paint. Those were parts I scratch built out of boxwood, such as the tops and much of the deck furniture - I felt that it would be a shame to cover up such a beautiful wood. For me, aesthetic considerations are sometimes more important than historical accuracy!

    Keep up the good work.

I really hate myself for doing this but, are you sure that the base should not be on the outside? I mean on top of the sides not between them?

Neat idea that. I take it you are going to twin wire the lights then ?

Yes Bug, I did the same thing just for the one battery. The problem I had was partly that the placement of the hole for the wires in the instructions was a wee bit too low, it needed to go up about 1cm, and I should have cut the wires shorter as they got in the way of the battery. The supplied bulbs are actually quite dim which is fine and looks good so I am not sure on the need for two batteries.

Not a bad idea but where do you put two batteries? I had enough trouble fitting one under the driving seat.

Yes, I see they do some but also a company called Antics Online that do all the model airways planes.

Eddie, Danny, I have found some suppliers of model airways kits in the UK. The Sopwith Camel looks good so I will have to start saving up.

Many thanks both for the tips.

Nothing on ebay at the moment Danny but I tend to check it every day - sad person that I am!!

I will check out Model expo Eddie but at the moment, with the exchange rate as it is and the sheer cost of getting anything shipped from the States probably make it a no go.

Hope you had fun checking out my build logs and thanks for all the kind comments.

I have been thinking about doing a plane but I have been having difficulty in finding a wooden one. I used to scratch build planes in my distant mis-spent youth and I don't want to make plastic ones. About the only kit I have seen is from Amati - pricey though!

That's what I did. I put the switch on the panel in the box under the drivers seat. It doesn't show too much.

R.Cariline is back to the shipyard. An update, showing deck planking and finishing the the second planking of the hull. I also tryied to open the first gunport...  a rotary tool with a drill bid was essential to start the operation.
