Thanks for the all the comments & likes!  Marcus, yes I'm leaving both labels on so it is both one of my hot sauce bottle collection & a SIB.

    Hi Nils

Marvellous stuff; especially the silver dinghy in the second and third photos.

Can I ask how you made them?

    Cheers

    Part 2 of 2......

these tin, nickel plated feet for bags, will do for making the scoop bowls of some of the vents

    first trial for lifeboat production....

    scale 1:144, 60 mm long

    supports for covering deck

I still had some odd plastic dinghis, from which I cut off the first 30 mm with the bows, glued those together for total 60mm length

added more year 1900 nostalgic (more straight) bow and sternpost (double-ender boats), and dd the lapstrake planking by means of self adhesive metal foil stripes

    A little update....

    Build log part 18

    Part 1 of 2

the long promenade deck has to be roughly fitted, and to be supported with I-beams in the areas of the aft waist (one deck below). Although it`s a later building sequence I`ve been experimenting with the making of bollards, scoop bowls for the vents (there are so many different sizes !)
And also the making of the small 60 mm long lifeboats....., here is a first trial in clinkered version, if it works out OK, that would be my master lifeboat-plug for doing the whole batch in resin cast afterwards, other solutions pending

    Nils

here a preliminary adjustment gauge (distances, alignment and perpendicularity of stanchions) is created

the markings will be transferred to the covering deck afterwards

the promenade deck will be made of sections, whereby the center remains open and unplanked

here some of the many bollards are made ( hollow rivets soldered into brass plates, and the center filled with a piece of round rod), then primered

final mounting to a wooden base plate

    Carronade breech rigging.

To rig the breech lines I decided to glue all the cannons in place and not do them off the ship, pretty much how it’s described in the manual.  After doing three cannons I came up with a procedure that worked pretty well for me.

First I made up all the breech lines I needed for the remaining five starboard cannons with a breech ring and eye bolt seized to one end.  At the other end of the line I applied some ca glue to stiffen it up to make it easier to thread through the other rings. Next I glued the breech ring’s eye bolt to the bulwark and threaded the line through the left and center breech rings.  Prior to doing the right side of the cannon I glued the line to the deck on the left hand side of the cannon as Chuck did in his instructions.

On the right side of the cannon I glued the breech ring to the bulwark prior to threading the line through it.  I also slipped a ‘zip-seizing’ onto the line before threading it through the bulwark breech ring.  'Zip-seizing'?, you may ask.  While reading Brian’s (GuntherMT) AVS log I was intrigued with his use of ‘zip-seizing’ and thought I would give it a try and it worked out rather well.  Here’s a link for anyone interested in learning more about it http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/8936-zip-ties-yes-or-no-for-seizings/?p=263833.

Before threading the line through the ‘zip-seizing’ I glued the breech line to the deck. Once the glue was dry I tightened up the line on the breech ring and applied some ca to the seizing.  Threading the line through the ‘zip-seizing’ was a challenge but with a little patience it can be done.  I'm also glad I added the breech rings to the upper sled, it made positioning the breech line much easier.

Starboard side finished.                                                 Port side done.

Sal and Tom, welcome back to my log!  I hope I can continue to contribute to the ever growing knowledge base here on MSW.  Your builds of the Syren and Constitution are both coming along very nicely, very ambitious builds and impressive work so far.  I look forward to moving into plank on bulkhead and advanced kits in the future, hopefully I can do them justice!

    Mini update:

I have been working on a bunch of the final deck fixtures that need to be completed before moving on to the rigging portion of this build.

First came the ventilator, I cleaned it up with a needle file and then added some vertical grooves in the top cap, though it was difficult to keep it in place while making the cuts so they are not perfect.  No biggie.

I also forgot that I have an airbrush for painting so this one was hand painted but I will be switching back to airbrushing, whenever possible, for other items moving forward.

Next, I began working on the anchor.  I decided to drill small holes between the main anchor and the bar that runs it's length (not sure what this part is called).  Similar to cutting the scuppers in the bulwarks, I just drilled some holes and then cut out the remaining material with my exacto knife.  I like the effect of this, it separates the different pieces.  Just needs to be painted now.

Last thing for this update, the windlass.  I decided to scratch build this item out of some spare boxwood so that it would match the deck and other deck fixtures.  I had to glue some strips together to get the desired thickness for the square stock.

I cut the two uprights to length and then gave them 7 degrees of angle on the bottoms so that they would stand vertical despite the angle in the deck.  I took this from the plans as it looked like they were vertical in them.

Next, I glued the horizontal timbers into place, making sure to match the 7 degree angle on the bottom so that they would be parallel with the deck and hopefully better accept the bowsprit.

Then I just sanded them flat and filed the horizontal timbers so that they were smaller squares and matched the plans/cast windlass that came with the kit.

Finally, I fabricated the winch bits out of some more scrap boxwood and cut a piece of brass wire to length.

Here is one last picture of where the windlass stands right now, just needs a coat of black paint on the winch bits and then I will use some copper tape to fasten the winch to the windlass.

Before logging off, I have a question regarding the anchor and how to display it.  I have some cable laid rope in 1.2mm (black) and 1.5mm (tan) and was wondering:

    1)  Should the anchor cable be tan like running rigging or black like the standing rigging?  It seems like the tar would have made it more durable but harder to work with so I am not sure.

    2)  If I want to display it with the cable attached, how should this be routed?  I figure it would come out of the hawse pipe hole but then should it come over the cap rail onto the deck where the anchor is stored?  Also, should the extra cable just be coiled and placed inboard near the hawse pipe hole, this would certainly help cover some of the imperfections in the forward decking up near the bow.

    3)  I know some ships had a few feet of chain connecting the anchor to the anchor cable, would this be accurate on the Phantom, I have so much trouble finding information on these ships that I can't find anything related to this detail of this type of ship.

As always, I hope you enjoyed the progress update and I definitely appreciate any input you guys may have about the anchor questions raised above.

    Until next time,

Max, I'm glad you like the ship, it's quite a step up from the Phantom.

One of the main reasons I purchased the Syren was because of the detailed instructions that came with it and Chuck does an excellent job of explaining each step.  You can go to the Model Expo site and download the instructions if your interested prior to purchasing the kit.  I think too that just as long as you have some basic knowledge of ship building and model making (and a lot of patience) you shouldn't have any problem building this kit.  There is also this forum that is most helpful for looking at previous builds and for answering any questions you may have.

    Best of luck

After a hiatus from building over the Labor Day weekend helping my wife at an art show I am back at adding all the mast stay lines for the standing rigging. I added the balance of the lines to the bowsprit and then basically worked fore to aft and bottom to top. I quickly learned that it requires a delicate touch when seizing the lines so as not to warp or deflect the thinner mast sections out of alignment. I left most of the top ends of the lines not glued to allow for rope stretching under tension and adjusted as needed and will not glue them until all the yards are in place.

I found the assembly instructions not very helpful and I felt like a detective tracing the lines to their attachment points; especially when not identified. I am sure part of the problem is my lack of specific knowledge of rigging since this is my first ship build. Following are pictures of most of the lines in place. I also need to acquire a better background for photographing since she is getting bigger.

Once the final stay lines are completed I will then start the yards working from bow to stern, bottom to top and then add the booms.

Hmm... I will have to think over when I want to build this beautiful ship.  I would love to build it next but I don't think I have the confidence in planking the hull yet and I would like to get one or two POB kits under my belt so that I could do this ship some justice.  I know this was your first planking job but you id a much better job than I think I could do on my first try, it is actually very impressive the quality of planking you were able to accomplish.  Additionally, I don't think I will be able to convince the admiral on the purchase of another kit while I have a few under the bench already.  Regardless, first things first... finish the Phantom before planning my next challenge, on my way to update my log now.

    Sal,

Thought I would come check out your build log to see another great ship being built.  All I can say is wow, fantastic work so far! I look forward to seeing your progress as you move forward.

Question, since your first build was the Phantom and this is your second, how do you feel about the instructions that are included with this kit? As I understand it, they are quite detailed but I am wondering how much prior knowledge is assumed since this is an advanced kit.

Keep up the great work Sal!

    Best regards,
