    Post 90
    Cheerful is completed.
An eighteen month journey has drawn to a conclusion.
It is interesting to note that the original was built and fitted out within a twelve month period.
Tempted as I may be to mast and rig her, display constraints rule this out, but it's not like I don't have fully rigged models on display, Pegasus, and indeed a 1:72 scale cutter amongst others.
I am happy to conclude the build with this configuration in the knowledge that there are many  contemporary models displayed in this style.

I really have to compliment Chuck for making this posssible with his wonderful plans, accurate  pre-cut hull parts, mini kits, and excellent instructions.
Cheerful as I bought it is an example of a high end PoB kit with beautiful kit specific fittings, a real pleasure to build.

I must also compliment Jason at Crown Timberyard who supplied the bulk of the Boxwood strip and sheet, presented in a very clean and accurate condition.

So here are the completion photo's before I slip the cover over the base. The case  wasn't designed for Cheerful but for Pegasus to serve as protection during the long years before she was masted, but it does ideally fit the bill.

With great sadness here to inform that Aleksander Dobrenko "woodeater" had passed away.
He was only 65. He was one of the greatest enthusiasts of ship modeling in Russia and well known in Europe as well. He had put together modelers guild of St. Petersburg, organized annual ship modeling show and contest "University Cup", was a go to guy in all aspects of the hobby and naval history of Russia. He will be greatly missed.

    Part 323 – Wrapping Up

Finally, 99.999% means complete.  Since the last post it has been a lot of little chores: snipping rope ends, the last few rope coils, touching up with paint, waxing standing rigging lines, clean up, etc.  Some of the "major" chores are described below.

The first picture shows the final disposition of the crojack sheets and tacks.  These were simply allowed to hang free from the clue garnet blocks with their full lengths coiled on deck.  They were tied down to one of the beams under the pile of rope coils to keep them vertical and straight..

The main braces could finally be run, since access was no longer needed to the deck area between the main and mizzen masts.  The next picture shows the starboard brace pendant shackled to the outer boomkin eye.

The fall of the brace runs from the yard pendant through the lead block on the rail in the center of the picture, then to a deck cleat.  The other blocks on the boomkin are the upper and lower main topsail braces.  Two missing eyebolts still need to be fitted on the rail. The picture also shows the completion of another chore left over from the volume II work, fitting chains to support the boomkins.  The next picture shows both of these.

The next picture shows the starboard swinging boom, the lower studding sail boom,  being lashed to the fore channel brackets.

The alternative would be to store these on the skid beams over the cabin, but this seemed more appropriate, since in port these were often used to moor ships' boats.

The next picture shows the model with the dust case removed in the relatively cleaned-up workshop.

    Finally, launch.

Please excuse the amateur artwork.  Couldn't resist.

Hi guys. I finally got the lower part of the quarter gallers and the counter all planked up. I didn't leave it bare and painted it to match the wales. One thing about it this time is it's easy on the eyes which makes me think that maybe just maybe I got it right or at least close to being right.  Gary

The last thing I did before leaving was to prepare for planking.   This entailed the usual batten placement.   I cant stress enough that this is probably one of the most important procedures for any ship model project.  The batten represents the run of the wales and if there are errors and dips and waves with your placement it will impact countless aspects of your project later.   Not just the run of your planking but also your placement and angle of the quarter galleries, your curve of the sheer, your placement and shape of the headrails.   So take your time with this.

The top of the batten strip represents the BOTTOM of the wales.  I followed the laser etched reference lines on the bulkheads but this is just a start.  Some of these will be "off" for various reasons.   So once you have the batten in position you should eyeball it from as many different angles as possible to correct any issues.  You want a nice smooth run.

Note where the batten intersect the stem at the bow and its proximity and location to the scarf joint on the stem.   There is a gentle "s" curve to the run of the wales at the bow and this can be tricky for folks who never noticed it before.   The batten is nailed temporarily in position.
At the stern, it could get tricky also.   Note where the top of the batten rests on the lower counter.  For those of you who may build this model, the top of the batten falls right in the middle of stern frame "D" as if you ran a line directly down the outside edge.

As soon as I get back I will start planking the lower counter.  The lower counter planking will all be laser cut and pre shaped.  There will be six strakes of 1/4" planking.

Next stop is the beach with where I will sit with a drink in my hand ...maybe even with one of those fancy little umbrellas.   See you when I get back.  Oh and the online store for Syren is now officially closed until I get back.

Whether I proceed to mast and rig her is undecided but there is still a fair bit of fiddling to do before I consider her complete.

Again leave a link to my new site (details section for ship models)
Here are the latest photos of the construction of the Imperial yacht Standart. The model is almost finished. It remains for me to make four boats and restore order with the help of wax mastic. In the construction of this model, I have widely used the manufacture of metal parts by the method of precision vacuum casting of investment wax. This is the very method I use to create parts for very different ship models.
