foxy reacted to SgtSki in MI in USS Constitution by SgtSki in MI - Revell - 1:96 - PLASTIC
3 January, 2015: And we're off! The first step is getting rid of those pesky bridle ports that weren't there under Hull's command. I cut some scrap styrene to block of the ports from the inside and will fill them with putty tomorrow. Once it done and smooth I'll scribe in the woodgrain and planking divisions. The big challenge is going to be smoothing out the fill area without ruining the woodgrain detail surrounding it, because the detail is molded raised instead of recessed. Meanwhile, I'll clean up the mold flashing on the hull halves, of which there is very little.

foxy got a reaction from popeye the sailor in HMS Victory by foxy - Heller - 1/100 - PLASTIC - with Dafi's etch & resin set
Moving on with the closed heart blocks, made a boob of the first set of Syren one's so ordered some more, will need eight of these for the stays and preventor stays.
Got it right this time round???.
Next it was the carronades that go on the forecastle, two in all.
So a little detailing is ness.
Added Dafi's etch and some scratch items.
Show before painting.

Well its a busy time and found some brass/stainless rings for hanging the anchors.
With black rope raped around ring and later will add cotton thread for seizing, also plastic strips that come with Dafis resin anchors glued around wood plinths.
Next it was the crest to finish, not to happy with this as the lions are not very good,(old Mold I expect).
Made up the ships bell with Dafis etch and extra brass rod to allow the bell to swing later.
I assume that the handle on the top has a pull rope attached, anyone Know if this is correct???.
Last pictures are the catheads added crown to front that comes with the kit.
More later

foxy got a reaction from Dimitris71 in Amerigo Vespucci by Dimitris71 - Mantua - 1:100 scale
Lovely work Dimitris.
Just spent time looking through your build so far, stunning work and your use of photo etch.
All in 1/100 gauge too.

It's a shame they want me to cover all this work up with a veneer.

foxy reacted to Dimitris71 in Amerigo Vespucci by Dimitris71 - Mantua - 1:100 scale
Hello to all!!
At last, Amerigo Vespucci has arrived! This is my second ship build.
First impressions: wood quality is better than that of my previous build and the manual, consists of 9 large sheets with general instructions (compared to the step by step manual of the previous build).
Attached you may find photos from unpacking the kit and first dry fit.
And now comes my first question:
Starting from the bottom of the keel, at which distance should I carve the rabbet line?
Thank you in advance for your help

foxy reacted to Force9 in USS Constitution by Force9 - Revell - PLASTIC - Revisiting the classic 1/96 kit
Ahoy...
Sorry folks for the very long gap between updates... Had to call a timeout for the holidays and some business travel.
I've been fiddling with guns a bit in the background, but I also managed to lay down some black on the hull. I had several flavors of Vallejo Black in my collection: Grimy Black (too greenish), Engine Black (too much sheen), and regular "Black". I went with the latter - it lays down very flat and has a nice neutral tone.
Still much to tune up and I have kept some of the masking in place until I paint the red linings of the spar deck ports, but here are some quick views:
The final appearance of the yellow stripe took some thought and compromise... The Corne paintings show the stripe in line with the edges of the gun ports and finishing with a scalloped end after the most forward gun port:
This is the path to choose if you're paying strict adherence to the Corne paintings. I have to admit, however, that I do like the wider stripe shown in the Thomas Birch painting of the Guerriere fight:
This gives the ship a more robust look and sets off the gun ports nicely. I do think, however, that it would be too big a leap from the Corne paintings. The 1803 painting done by Corne for Commodore Preble provides a very nice compromise:
This shows the stripe in line with the upper edge of the gun ports and extending just a bit below the bottom edge. This version also includes the scalloped front end. (of course, this has led some people to think that Corne copied this older version when making the 1812 series for Isaac Hull... I don't think so. Too many other differences and it seems likely that Corne had access to the ship during her late 1812 refit to make newer sketches and notes). Exercising a bit more artistic license, I've elected to use this for my model.
Here is how I approached the scalloped front of the stripe:
I rummaged around in my collection of spare washers and found one small enough for the purpose. After laying down two strips of Tamiya tape, I traced the outline of the washer with a hobby knife. I then transferred the tape to the model and masked off the rest of the stripe before laying down the black paint.
Thanks again to everyone who follows along (and shows great patience between my updates!)

A little more progress this time on Dafi's resin Anchors and Knights head.
First the Anchors, there are three types(sizes),not much trouble here assembling, some sanding and filing.
Later when all ok, will spray black and make brass rings fettered, plus 1mm plastic strip for binding.
Next it was the Knights head, this is the basic shape after sanding and making sure it fitted the bowsprit.
A clearer picture of the additions of Dafi's brass etchings and some brass rod.
Just some brass rod supports for fixing and to spray black.
Again a very good fit and will be better than the bits from Heller.

A couple more pictures.
One of the heart blocks on the bowsprit.
Next a start on the crown that goes a top the crest on the bow.
Using the plastic base from the kit, filled in the corners and next will add the PE parts.
Note the lettering that will adorn the crest once this is painted.
More soon.

Cheers Keith mate, A happy New year to you and your family.
Still on the crest and crown for this ship.
Using Daniels etched parts for the crown and wording.
First filled in the Heller Plastic part of the crown using Plastic putty, great stuff this and lasts and lasts.
Used round head pliers for the crown top.
Once crown fixed to crest started painting.
Still to finish lions on the crest, plus the lettering.
More soon.

Hi all hull halves together
as you can see will need a fair amount of sealant to waterproof it, even though I used a vise the gaps are still quite large. just waiting for the brass rod and tube for the prop shaft to come then I will seal it all.
