An absolute masterpiece!! Congratulations to you for your master skills and to the now very lucky owner it will be in the possession of. It must be difficult to say goodbye to this fantastic ship model, and I hope that many people will get to marvel at it over the years to come. We are all so delighted that we got to see the build log. Best wishes from London.

A beautiful build mate, great attention to detail and accuracy. I looked at getting this Mantua model, but as my first build i decided to get the Gorch Fock, which was far less complex. https://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/7701-gorch-fock-by-tonyuk-mantua-scale-1-90/&tab=comments#comment-512270

My finished model photos. I really enjoyed building this beautiful ship. When I look at some of the scratch builders work, mine seems less impressive, but for my first build I am very happy with the result. Cheers

Looking great Nils, and great pics...always love having a zoom in and seeing your exquisite detailed work. I would love to build a steamship kit. Though apart from Titanic, there doesn't seem to be any others that I can find. I fancy building a ship with funnels. Lol. Where do people get the ship plans for scratch models?

Thanks Tomasg. As its my first build, I don't really know how the quality compares to other kit manufacturers. The Mantua kit, which I managed to get for half the RRP, seemed pretty good to me. Good quality materials, clear plans, but not particularly helpful instructions (amusingly translated from the Italian by someone who might just have about passed a GCSC in English), they seem to just suggest the order in which to build the ship. Though half of the fun of building a model like these is working out how to do it. And with the vast resources available online, that was easy enough. The kit did have a few things missing, not enough portholes, dowls, eyelets and some of the decorative wooden strips missing. Though these were easy and cheap to buy. Other than that I'd recommend it. Cheers

Thanks very much Nils. Your build updates are the first thing I look for whenever i visit the site.....brilliant and inspirational! My kit build has been slow and steady over nearly 2 years, but i am nearly finished. Goodness knows how many hours i have spent working on it, but... i'm not counting! Rather than watching the box, i put some music on and sit at my work bench and try do the best i can with every part of the build, i know it cant be perfect, but make it as best i can. It has become a labour of love. (Apart from doing the 100's of ratline knots!) Here are some more pictures from along the way.

Have just spent a very enjoyable hour or so with a glass of beer enjoying reading this build log. What a beautiful ship she was. Incredible modelling skills. I am nearing the end of my first model kit Mantua Gorch Fock, if only this steamship came as a kit! Cheers from the Scottish Highlands, Tony

Varnish over painted hull

Thanks for the replies, Does the Ronseal water based varnish turn the white painted areas a shade of yellow, or does that only happen with oil based varnishes? -
Varnish over painted hull
TonyUK replied to TonyUK's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
Brilliant, many thanks -
Hi, I have nearly finished painting the hull of my Mantua Gorch Fock model ship. The hull is White and emerald green. I have used acrylic paint. The White is very matt (Humbrol) and the green is quite glossy (Billing boats...the only paint I could get of the correct colour). I would like a satin look to the whole hull, My question is, what type of varnish/protective coat should I use? Is it ok to put an oil based satin varnish over acrylic paint? Or should I use a water based varnish? Will a satin varnish slightly shine up the Matt White and reduce the glossy look of the green making it look even? Should I wire wool the green first maybe, to take some of the shine off it? Any advice appreciated. Cheers

Brilliant building log. You've built a beautiful model there. Well done. -
In my Mantua kit, it has printed in the box "the laser engraved wooden sheet replaces the original photo etched brass sheet, it is felt blah blah" With the photo etched doors/windows I understand you would paint them white (in my case) and then sand them to reveal the non etched parts? Just wondering, what am I supposed to do with these wooden ones? The doors need to be white, but what of the etched bits around the edge? Any help/ideas appreciated.

Hi everyone, I am new here, and am just starting my first model ship. After reading masses of information online, studying the instructions, labelling the parts and getting all my tools, I finally made a start yesterday. I glued the stand together, and removed the lazer cut frames and keel from the plywood sheets and a slotted them all together. I have a question already, should I taper the edges of the frames (to allow the planking to sit properly) BEFORE or after I glue the frames into place? Maybe a bit of both? Thanks in advance.

Mike, what brilliant job you have done! Fantastic looking model. I've just spent an hour or so reading this whole thread and found it very interesting and helpful. I have just started my very first ship model. Gorch Fock 1:90 by Mantua. After hours of online reading, studying the instructions/labelling, I finally made a start yesterday (I have made the stand!). Your building log here has inspired me to do the same, as you have had such helpful friendly advice along the way, which I know I will also require! What a great site! Cheers
