    Hi shipmates!

A little update. I've been working with mast and spars, and of course, their installation.

Jack is checking everything is ok.

Here you can see Swift testing her sai..... no, templates. This gives an idea of how is she going to look once complitely rigged.

So, as i said, just a little update. Next i'll show details about rigging, blocks, lines, etc. And some sail making too.

    See you next time.

GioMun reacted to G.L. in Norwegian Whale Boat by G.L. - FINISHED - scale 1/10 - SMALL
In case of this Norwegian whale boat, the planks are nailed to the ribs and to each other.
To prevent the planks and the ribs to split while nailing them, I pre-drill the nail holes.

Then I put the nails in. I use the smallest brass nails that I could find but I realize that the nail heads are anyway a bit too big. I hope that it won't stand out too much when the model will be finished.

That is what it looks like inside. On the real boats the part of the nails which sticks out at the inside were bent over and flattened with the point of the nail again punched in the wood.
I use only one row of nails between each pair of ribs because of the size of the nail heads. On real boats there were probably a lot more nails. On the left side of the picture the nails are all ready flattened, on the right side those between the ribs still have to be bent over.

Bending over the nails has to be done carefully because cherry wood is soft and it can easily be damaged. Most of the nails in the ribs can be punched using a pin punch and a light hammer.

For the nails between the ribs, I have to be more prudent. I have to bent over the nail first with a small pair of pliers, then I flatten the nail by giving it a tap with the hammer on the nail head at the one side, using the pin punch as an anvil at the other side.

All ribs are a bit too long; they are now cut to the correct length to be able to place the gunwale.

    Gluing the gun wale.

In the slot at the bow for the harpoon line sits a sheave, it is more a kind of roller, to guide the harpoon line.
    Making the roller.

    Hello shipmates!

Last year i started this new build. I decided to give the old Artesania Latina's Swift Pilot boat, a different look. I find this little schooner a very beautiful ship.
When i started on shipmodeling, i did't have the opportunity to start with kits, so this kit it would have been the perfect kick start, but it didn't happened.
So, 20 years later, i gave my self a second chance, and with the plans, i decided to give it a try, giving it a different look, as the manufacturers gave it.
Unfortunatly we are not talking about a ship that it existed in the real life, so what you will see here is just a mix from differents ship of the era and the time, there is not a theorical basis to follow, i hope to reach a good port.
But, enough talking, lets make same sawdust!!

I'm posting some pictures from the first steps, up to today, and i'll keep reports from now on.

GioMun reacted to Tim Holt in Swift 1805 by Tim Holt - Artesania Latina - 1:50 - first build
More rigging over the last week putting the gaffs and booms in place.  It's really starting to look "shippy" indeed, and the end is in sight perhaps.

A few pictures here of creating some blocks to attach to the main boom.  I tried a little experiment with one by looping rope over a copper wire, then soaking it in CA glue.  That created a nice little thimble-like loop for later attachment.  The blocks by the way are from Syren Ship Model Company, the rope is from Ropes of Scale, and the seizing thread is very fine Veevus 6/0 fly tying thread.

As I think I have mentioned before, I am not following the rigging plan as the original Artesania Latina kit specifies, but instead essentially following the Model Shipways Katy of Norfolk plans, as they seem much more realistic without the unrealistic shortcuts the AL model takes.

Here's an overview of the model with gaffs and boom in place...

And a closeup of the gaff halyards and mast base where the halyards are tied off...

I went with hooks for most all the gaff rigging which makes installation and removal for convenience quite easy.  For now none of the lines on cleats are glued - only tied down in proper cleat fashion.

One other thing I did (which you can't see) is I put a short piece of wire into the jaw end of the gaffs and boom, which then goes into a hole screwed into the mast.  That way the gaffs and boom will stay in place, and I am able to tighten the halyards without having the jaws just slide up the mast.  It also lets me ensure the gaffs and boom align along the fore and aft line.

I'm starting the layout of mine and i'm trying to figure out something nice and historical accurated.

What do you think about the sistem of the anchors?  I mean there is not a capstan, or anything to man the anchors so, how did the Swift load the anchors? I don't know.

    Keep the good work!!

    Hi Toni,
thank you for your interest in my construction report and the appreciation of my work.
Many thanks also to the others for the many LIKES.

    Continued: Equipment of the yards
As announced in the last part of my construction report, I equip the larger yards with real discs. As before, I make these discs out of brass and blue them. As far as I know, these discs were usually made of lignum vitae. The rather dark brown coloring of this wood can be easily imitated with a blue finish.
For the main yard and the fore yard, the sheaves have a diameter of 2.9 mm. The main topsail yard, fore topsail yard and mizzen yard are fitted with sheaves with a diameter of 2.0 mm.
With the following series of pictures I would like to illustrate how I make the sheaves. Since my turning skills are limited and with these small diameters, I made the circular groove with a jeweller's saw. The fine saw blade I use for this has a thickness of 0.15 mm. I can control the width of the groove. The more inclined I lead the saw blade, the wider the groove. As a rule, the groove has a width of around 0.2 mm.

After cutting the sheaves, I grind them to the required thickness according to the size of the protrusion for the sheaves, i. H. about ø 0.6 mm or 0.8 mm. For grinding, I made myself an aid, the tip of which engages in the axle hole and thus enables the sheaves to be guided more or less evenly for grinding.

The axle bores of the sheaves were made with ø 0.8 mm larger than the axle diameter ø 0.4 mm itself. This makes the installation of the sheaves much easier and also compensates for small inaccuracies.

The next pictures should give an impression of the installation of the sheaves. As can be seen in the second picture, the axle holes are not exactly opposite. This is due to the fact that I have to drill the ø 0.4 mm holes for the axles from each side. If you try to drill these holes in one go from one side, it can easily happen that the hole on the other side does not arrive in the middle due to the thin drill and other inaccuracies. This is then much more disturbing than the axis points that are not exactly opposite, which is no longer noticeable after the shortening anyway.

After shortening the axles, the ends are filed clean with a micro file and blued. The filing creates a small burr, which usually makes it no longer necessary to glue the axles.
The last picture shows the finished yardarms of the fore yard, main topsail yard and mizzen yard.

It then continues with the stunsail boom irons. There are still a few open points to be clarified, as always... 😊
    Sequel follows …

    Hello,
Thanks for the positive comments, also for the many LIKES.
    That motivates even more.

    Equipping the yards
In the meantime, I have started to fit the ends of the yards with sheaves, over which the sheets and reef tackles are then passed.
In the lower and topsail yards, the holes for sheave were made with the 0.8 mm and 0.6 mm milling cutter, with the exception of the mizzen topsail yard. Brass turned sheaves will be installed there later.
For the topgallant and royal yards with the mizzen topsail yard, the sheaves are only suggested due to the size. The following pictures show the individual processing steps.

    1. drill holes with 0.5 mm

    2. finishing with 0.5 mm wood hollow chisel

    3. rounding out with 0.5 mm shank drill bit

The last picture shows the yard arms of the main topsail, fore topsail and mizzen topsail yard.

I think that the "fake" sheaves in the mizzen topsail yard are reasonably convincing. I have also used the same method on many blocks.
    See you soon ...

Thank you CiscoH, JJ and Glenn and for the likes.

I started the square tuck with a problem. I had no underhang below the counter. I'm unsure how I achieved that. It meant some cutting away.

I decided to make the square tuck frame in one piece. That seemed easier with not much backing wood to glue to. These are trial pieces.

Here is another trial piece with the infill area cut away  and the one piece frame split to form the joint in the top corner. I later abandoned splitting the frame - forsaking the joint, which I doubted I could form very well, for a tidy outcome.

These are the pieces I will use.
Here I've formed the cut out and I'm trial fitting the infills. At this stage I was going to leave the infill a little lower than the surrounding frame. I later abandoned that idea and went for flush.

An important "line" is the first plank below the square tuck. The incoming plank must flow smoothly through. Here I'm making ready.

    Both sides done.

The stern post resting in position.
    Flush fitting the infills.

And here is where I am now.

Ready for a bit of a repaint and the treenailing the hull - which fills me with dread!

But first of all i want to mention that i recived some fittings from Syren Ship Model Company, thank you @Chuck for your fittings and rope, they are very fine made, and i hope i'll be able to use them properly. I'll be buying more for sure.

And here are some pictures of my model. The gunwales are made from chilean Rauli, an excellent wood from Chile. Here you can find it as mouldings for carpentry.

Also y made and installed the tiller. Still missing something on the tip, i have to investigate a little more. I hope you like it.

Still some finishing to do. Next will make some belayings and hull fittings. I'm also designing the deck furniture.

    Hello mates!

Thank you Cathead and Tim Holt for your comments and everyone for the likes.

Yes, i'm sure this pine is related to the araucarias that you have seen in Chile, although this species is brazilian, from the south, a much colder place than the rest of Brazil, so the wood is harder, similar to the chilean environment where the araucarias are found.

I saw your build, and i liked it. I complitly agree with you, this little ship deserves better. I liked the investigation you made about it, and what you found on Chapelle book. I have another book from Chapelle, named The Baltimore Clipper.

Of course the main subject is different, but when it talks about developement, it makes some comments about the Virgina Pilot Boats, and shows some paintings and a body plan too.

I hope this is useful. I think it is. I can see that the main mast, in both ships, seems to be a little more tilted than the foremast. Of course, no one saw this in Artesania Latina.

As for my model, i made some progress. Installed the thiller, made the nameplate, i made it from boxwood (buxus sempervirens). It is the first time i did it so i don't know about the resault. I hope you like it!!

Now i'm working on the taffrail, gunwale, and some deck furniture. That will come shortly, i promise.

    Hope you like the pictures.
