NMBROOK got a reaction from Matrim in The Ships of Scapa Flow - By Campbell McCutcheon
An interesting publication Matrim.I have a couple of books on the subject and a video(yes it was bought a while ago) of the Royal Oak,including footage of the wreck.Diving is prohibited on the Royal Oak as a designated war grave.Navy divers do lay a wreath every year on the anniversary of her sinking.
Having visited the Orkneys,Scapa Flow is an eary place, the oil rising to the surface is still clearly visible(similar to Arizona) from her resting place.
Much of the steel salvaged from the German fleet is prized by space technology.Apparently because it was smelted prior to atomic bomb technology, the low radioactive value is of much use in space technology.

This is interesting stuff mate.Whilst my area of knowledge is a little later and mainly confined to English ships, there are some almost general rules to follow for the 16/17th century. The lower main wale will almost certainly dip into the water as you have it.The biggest difference is that the ports will not follow the curvature of the wales.Alot of period artwork exaggerates the sheer of the vessel and quite often the ports follow this. This is purely artistic license and would not follow reality.Whilst the decks will have some sheer,it would not be anywhere close to that of the wales. Some part of the wales, whether it be the mainwale,in part,or the chainwale would be cut into by the ports.
One other consideration is that there are no guarantees there would be a clear deck run fore and aft.It was quite common in this period to have a stepped deck, rather than a single one that ran the full length. This 'step' would more often than not be in the aft/stern area.

The battery of the La Créole fills up slowly but steadily. Today the carronade no. 17 was set. Now is still missing 3 pieces and 4 pieces 18 pounder, then the battery is fully.
The following photo shows the famous image of Horace Vernet the Battle of San Juan de Ulua with the poop deck of La Créole as background. I just wanted to transfer the atmosphere of the image on the model.

    Hello Alexander,

    thanks for your kind words.

    The carronades are now complete.
Still missing four 18 pounder guns on the gun deck.
I made this a long time ago. But a few details had yet to complete.

Thanks so much Nigel. It's good to hear from you again. I'm sorry both about your lost buyer and your inability to devote time or attention to modeling. We miss you.

I've begun on the fore mast running rigging by making and mounting the topgallant and royal yards and adding their rigging to the extent that I'm going to do it. It's my intention to do the yard rigging ( trusses, parrels, halliards, foot ropes, lifts,  braces) and certain of the sail rigging ( clews, sheets, but no bunt, leech or reef lines). This has been my practice for quite a while and is entirely arbitrary, based upon my feelings about appearance and feasibility. I am also not doing any of the headsail and staysail rigging on this build.

These first two yards, like the previously done spritsail and sprit topsail yards, are relatively simple, since they are round in section throughout. I added the cleats, foot ropes (on the topgallant), clew and sheet blocks, lift blocks (on the topgallant),  halliard ties, one end of the parrels and brace pendants (on the topgallant) before mounting the yards on their pins on the mast. I then added blocks for the lifts at the mastheads and   various blocks for the braces at the main topgallant mast, main topmast stay and fore top.

I then ran the lifts, clews, halliards and royal sheets and tied off those that are belayed in the fore top. Rope coils were added for each belayed line. Lastly, I ran the braces, but didn't tie them off at this point.

I'm now in the process of making the topsail yard and lower yard.

I've now made, mounted and rigged the spritsail and sprit topsail yards. The yards themselves were easy, since they are round in section throughout and only required tapering before adding the yard and arm cleats. I pre- rigged the yards by adding the halliard block, parrel, lifts and braces before mounting them on the pins previously set in the bowsprit and jibboom.

The parrels were then completed and the halliards and lifts were led through their respective blocks/thimbles and back to the bow pinrail, where they were tied off and separate rope coils added. The braces were led back through the the blocks under the fore top (an incredibly fiddly job), but won't be tied off until sometime during the fore mast rigging. The last task was to complete the rigging of the jibboom  and flying jibboom guys by leading them through eyebolts on the yards back to blocks and tackles at the bows that were tied off on the pinrail and coils added.

Next will be the foremast yards and rigging.

    Hi Dave
These plans appear to be almost identical to the Amati ones I have.I know that there isn't anything definitive regarding Sovereign's appearance, but for the most part, these plans are in contradiction with what reference sources are available. The discrepancies between various sources regarding her actual shape is discussed in Sephton's book at great length.

Thank you kind people for the comments!

Time for a Little update, Considering all the time i have until i start my new job i haven't got much done, being my first scratch build everything is a bit off here and there and some problems that needed fixing and thinking through but i think once i get to the planking everything will atleast LOOK much cleaner.

Having some problems with the stern making everything accurate, same with the gun ports(there is a problem in the centre hull which can be seen in one of the last pictures, this has been fixed). I think i've finally got the stern sorted so far. Heres the first terrible attempt.

And heres the second attempt, Thank you nigel for the glueing the plans on the wood tip, so much more helpful. covered each side with some thin pear glued to some scrap from my sovereign just to make things easier getting sizes right, although this will only be seen where the windows will be.

This attempt has made things a bit easier again getting the angles and making sure the 'stern frames' stay in their correct places.

Here are a few other pictures.
Pear deck has been covered with Teak oil as seen from another build of the belle poule which i greatly admire. This will be done with all pear on the ship.

Finally all the frames are added, not perfect but its done. Ready for the beams and stern to be added, not sure how to go about making the stern yet as i will make it out of something harder than lime.

(for some reason these images are never uploaded in high quality)

Next time on POB La Belle Poule!
    Beams added
    Small deck added
    Starting LED wiring!

    Hi PB
You build is looking good.I find Pritstik to work well gluing the patterns on.They peel off later and any residue can be removed with a damp cloth.
