NMBROOK got a reaction from MartyB in Deck planking - simulation of caulking
I thought I would post a couple of pics as this thread has popped up again.Having taken on board all the different methods employed by everyone,I feel I have come up with a new alternative .I developed this for my Mordaunt build to be used on both deck hull and keel. The fact the model will be finished in Shelac immediately precludes the use of any type of marker as the alcohol or meths base will dissolve this and cause it to smear. It is time consuming, but I feel gives a thinner sharper line than using black paper.I opted to use black tissue paper as not only is this much thinner,it allows doesn't run the risk of weakening the joint like paper.I do propose to post a tutorial on it as there are some differences to the paper method. The part laid deck in the picture still needs more scraping to the finished level, but gives an impression. The deck is pear with a max plank width of 5.7mm(the planks are tapered)

I've now added the catharpins, futtock shrouds, futtock staves and ratlines on the futtock shrouds. The catharpins are simplified, being hitched to the shrouds rather than seized. I chose to do the ratlines on the futtock shrouds first to get a little practice before tackling the larger areas of the shrouds. It's been about 3 years since I'd done any ratlines and I was a little rusty at first, but it's like riding a bicycle -- you never forget. After the first 5 - 10 knots you fall into the tedious monotony and it goes pretty quickly. I'm now working on the main areas of the ratlines on the lower shrouds.

Hello shipmates, the 4th and the last coat of car primer it is done. Now it needs one more sanding with 400 grid sandpaper and it is ready for painting. Some photographs..

NMBROOK reacted to AntiSpiral in La Belle Poule 1765 by AntiSpiral - 1/48 - An Adventure in POB
Well weeks have gone past since my last update and nothing since for a good reason..  Many problems were found when i noticed the frames weren't align which would obviously cause many problems, i expected little inconsistencies when builing my first scratch but nothing as bad as that, so ofcourse i've had to start again which isn't as bad a problem as i thought.

Tempted to restart the whole post but i think i'll just add these few pictures and next time post a big update.

Starting again was the best idea because now the ship is more accurate and reliable for future building, simple changes have helped me ensure its correct this time and i've had loads of spare timber left over to make the parts so far, as i had only got as far as making 5 frames.

    The progress so far:

Im very slow at this and am still waiting for stock of lime so im taking my time as to save money aswell.

Always a pleasure for the eyes looking in on your builds. This one in particular has spectacular woods, as has been noted. You so captured the nuances of the shades.

I have continued on and cut the remainder of the deck beams. It was a slow job due to the parallelogram shape of the aft beams because of the deck sheer. These are inserted through corresponding slots in the hull. These will be slid out and the remaining deck clamps fitted.
