    Hi Marc,

This is the best result of my "bug and flower" hunt last week.

I am trying to work out attending the NRG Conference.

Good luck on your "Utrecht" I will follow along when you start the log.  I finished the Oseberg nails (unless I decide to nail the deck planking).  I am working on the deck planking now.  I should have an update soon.

    Thanks for dropping in.

Thanks Kester, that's next on the list of To Do's.. I had a quick looksie around to see if I could determine what kind of Latch Arrangements would be appropriate for the time period.. was thinking of a type of Dead Bolt on one door going into the bottom 'step' with a latch type thing on the other door (ie operated by the handle) they will of course only be a suggestion of Latch/Dead Bolt due to scale restraints.
Does any of the above sound 'right' to ye folks out there.. am pretty sure Yale Locks wouldn't have been around back then    (just Googled it and they weren't too far away mind you, being founded in 1868 ish    )
Any suggestions will as always be much appreciated.. just remember the entertainment I had with 4 hinges    so nuttin too complex and involving intricate microscopic work.. think of my nerves and total lack of ability   particularly the Total Lack Of Ability... did I mention the Lack of Ability?

    Cheers Folks

    Eamonn,

Your dog house looks great – and I'm sure Nigel's dog would be at home down there. Very Happy Birthday by the way Nigel, if a bit belated. Hope you had a good day.

I agree, you need some sort of latch on the inside of the doors, to finish it off. As for the finish, Nigel's obviously going for the 'executive' look.

    Thanks Bob,

I`m Feeling very much honored for all the kind comments and "likes", and am happy that my first heritage 18th century ship is liked. Hopefully I`ll find through all the rigging work as well, I am still gathering information on that behalf

I just sliced some rings from a 8 x 0,5 mm brass tube and reshaped these over the handle part of an old square-file, so the brace Fittings work out exactly to slip tightly on the 6 x 6 mast top squares, simple easy without soldering

I thought it was about time I blew the dust off this log
Work has been 'hopping' about a little on the hull.I have been concentrating on sorting the exposed areas of framing.Because of the line of the main deck, various knees, beams and a black ebony waterway would appear in this window between the frames.Although this would be historically correct,I decided it would add a 'ramshackle' appearance to the build and looked for an answer.I decided that an intermediate layer of thin Pear planking from the deck clamp upwards would alleviate the untidy appearance. The basis of this layer has been added on the portside but will be completed when the deck clamp has been installed. On the starboard side are temporary ABS plastic strips tack glued with CA.These guide the fitting of the pear cappings between the open frames. These ensure a nice flow along the top and bottom of the cutout to match the edges of the upper wales. When overlong caps have been fitted and the aliphatic glue has dried, these strips are removed and the cappings sanded flush inside and out.The Aliphatic wood glue does not stick to the plastic.
The three rectangular holes in the hull are to receive the deck beams. There are many more to cut,I have just done these as they were so close to the cappings and also provide a reference point as these three beams delineate the hatchway opening and capstan.

    Kind Regards

Thanks for looking in Nigel ,Im sure you noticed in my log that i continualy change things as well as my mind ! But i must admit i,m really enjoying this build although the fact i have no fixed plans and am making it up as i go along means progress is very slow the lack of restrictions of having to achive an authentic build means anything goes as long as i like the finished look  The wood has been a problem but i have learned a lot for future builds , color variation seems to be a universal problem and as you say even individual strips can change considerably over a 1 meter length and have found 0.3 mm variation in width of a 3 mm strip !!!  Lesson learned and although to late for a lot of this build various solutions come to mind for the next  . thanks for the tip on white spirit , i had just been wetting with a damp cloth but dried out very quick , I have almost finished my countless variations on the gunports and hull planking and if nothing else gets changed i hope to post a few pics of my final attempt in about a weeks time , Am looking forward to moving on to a different part of the build as i seem to have been recutting cutting gunports for months ,and they still aren,t all square !!! thanks for your kind comments and feel free to offer any advice or opinions .

Your doghouse looks fabulous mate     Those hinges are certainly tiny,I can see why the fun and games.I do agree some sort of latch on the inside is the way to go to finish everything off.Black or Tamiya dark iron(my preferred choice)may be the thing for the ironmongery. You could always add a little dry brushing in silver for the finishing touch

was thinking of how to do the Stern lantern..., (not shown on the Amati plan)

I like the building kit set Chuck is offering, but I rather prefer one in brass. Exploring Ebay I found a nostalgic nice litte lantern for street illumination in scale 1:87 (H0, and the description said its the brass casting Version, that was exactly what I was looking for, and it was with clear glass instead of milkglass. When I opened the parcel, Oh dear, I was Holding a plastic Version with a reinforced brass tube lamppost Questioning this with the seller I learned that only the lamppost was to be in brass. So I sprayed the lamphousing in Brass Color, made a new bracket, arranged for a candle inside, and let my opinion of the view settle a bit...

this is make Viessmann lantern No. 6071, the railroad Freaks shall know....
The lamp housing with 17,5 mm hight ist just right to use for scale 1:64

the lantern Comes in black Color, top cover and glass insert can be removed. Here a new bracket is made together with a candle with dropping wax.

    spray coating without the glass

    and assembled at the stern

the bracket still requires some paint touchup

    Thank you Popeye,

I`ll leave the decision for stowing the capstan bars to a later Point, due to finding the best place..

    Michael,

the hammocks (47) are all in place now...

47 hammocks fit into the nettings

I am now studying masts and bowsprit rigging
to begin with an easy one, here are the foresail tack bumpkins with their blocks....

the ropes through the blocks are just to secure the dowels a bit untill they get permanently rigged

HI have been wondering where the QD capstan bars are stowed away, so that they are at hand when required. Perhaps someone knows... ? Here a solution, Popeye would probably call it the club rack

    You`re right B.E.

I had my doubts with that mizen platform on the plan when I first saw it. Now all 3 platforms are corresponding with you research results, many thanks again.
In the Moment I have not made up my mind yet, if the masts shall be or partially blackend in the platform Areas. If I put black wooldings on It perhaps may be contrast enough to the natural Wood, I was thinking of blackening the Yards though.

The mizen topmast as well as the fore- and main top masts and the two topgallant masts (acc. to plan ) look ver fragile in the waist Areas. Did you follow the plan here with yours ?

    platform widths now:
    mizen 44 mm
    Foremast 54 mm
    Mainmast 59,5 mm

    Build log part 52

Starting with the masting, and the top platforms.

as I have no milling Equipment the mast dowels are being filed down to the required measurements

    shaping, fore, main and mizzen

it worked dfine so far and the main top platform has a tight fit within the rated dimensions

the lower cheeks are fitted, the upper cheeks will be of ply

B.E once showed a wonderful tuteral for Platform Ratings, more orientated on Steel`s dimensions rather than the plans dimensions. Here the main top is 59,5 mm broad instead of 56 mm
Thanks to B.E. for this Research !

The fastening Points for the blocks are prefitted. The outer platform rim is of 3 mm ply and the Slots for the deadeye tacke are ready, as well as the 16 0,5 mm holes for the crows feet lines

the threstle timbers are quite sturdy

    Hi Martin,

the heart blocks are made of brass, I can do them faster than from Wood, and because I had some suitable profiles at Hand. The wooden heart blocks looked too clumsy for my eye, and the Profile takes the stay rope safe and secure.
Here a Little Hand scetch to explain how I did it...

    Hi Jason,

today I found and ordered the edition: Petersson's "Rigging Period Ship Models" from a reasonable offer at Ebay, hope that shall bring some more detailed knowledge for my rigging process when the post arrives from the UK next week, thanks again for your tip
I would have liked to find a priceworthy second Hand David Antscherl`s Volume 4, like Bob suggested but there are only new books that come round about 90 USD incl. postage to Europe

Bow sprit rigging is nearly completed...

All Righty Then Folks Some Photos as promised...
    Jeeez 'bout time eh?

I didn't get the opportunity to clean things up as I would have liked, but sure ye get the idea anyhoo !

You can just make out the hinges in one of the shots, yup they are Smaaaaallll .. can't really get any closer but I might give some different photo techniques a go later in the week (camera is away again this weekend taking more wedding photos... flippin thing has more of a life than I do    )
Remember none of the deck fittings are fixed in place as yet, and the little hand rail rope (visible inside the Dog-House) is not fixed at its lower end yet either as the whole dog-house needs to be tidied up first.

Oh by the way I left the Handles on the house natural (bronze coloured) not sure whether I'll paint them black or not.. and I might add a sort of inside mechanism to the doors (Latches etc) these will be pieces of black card and perhaps thin wire, as the door handles look weird without something like that on the inner side if you follow!!

    Stay Well Folks
