I agree with your philosophy regarding the forum Nils.I am not 'falling out' with you over this  Your post probably hasn't come across as intended.I feel you must appreciate though there are several 'prominent' model makers out there(I am not going to mention names) who have written books etc,and were they to start posting on here, they would be inundated with so many questions, they wouldn't have time to do anything else.
So Nils,we shake hands, and enjoy your weekend

To be honest Nils, after reading your post four times,I cannot work out whether you are having a go at me personally for posting my find of this DVD.After all in your eyes I could be seen as promoting it.My only question is,surely your argument would then apply to any modeler who chooses to write a book. After all,are they not 'cashing in' on the hobby? In my opinion a DVD is no different to a book, other than it probably does demonstrate things a little.better.
I would mention again that I have no connection with this DVD's producers.

The 'Mr Bean' exploding paint can, room painting technique springs to mind with a small Ballahoo placed in the middle     Who says us men can't multitask

I have edited this first post in view of my log relocation. This build did start as a modified version of the Deagostini partwork, but as you read through the log,you will discover virtually nothing remains from the kit.
To date I have built and planked the hull.So far the only kit parts I have used are the bulkheads. These had to be reprofiled at the stern to give a 'proper' round tuck stern. The planking below the walnut wales is maple and that above is boxwood. The walnut section at the top is to be painted black(I used walnut as it is a third of the cost of boxwood).I have cut the gunports as per the instructions but I am going to 'double line'the gunports on the upper deck to reduce them in size.
At present before I final size the gunports and add anymore detail,I am replicating the treenailing on the whole hull. After reading about the many different techniques I chose to drill 0.4mm holes then use dark wood filler. The hull was glass smooth and fully sealed before starting, and I found the process fairly simple akin to grouting tiles, although I estimate at between three and four thousand holes to be drilled!I made a simple jig to assist in marking where the frames would be.

Well, I think we know that Eamonn always buys in bulk! He hasn't told us yet, but I think he's planning to paint the house while he's at it (and he did mention magnolia).

Not a worry Nigel there are plenty of different whites out there and I haven't discounted the Natural Barley..   especially if I mix some of the Warm White into it ! worst comes to the worst it will make for a good undercoat over the Walnut timber and they were only a couple of Euro anyhoo (there are plenty of Off Whites where I work so I can experiment happily, particularly as I'm the one who uses them  )

We can always resort to that 'old chestnut' Magnolia !!!

Sorry to hear of the lack of success with the paint Eamonn I remember the ads on Tv,when Dulux was advertising whites, but with a hint of whatever. These were supposed to be a 'soft' alternative to brilliant white. It looks like their range has changed somewhat.

    Hi Matti
I think a lot depends on what they work out at scale size.On my Sovereign build they were 35-40mm on the original so I represented them at 0.4mm.The only thing that would concern me,although you have done far more research on this ship than I have, would be how many of the fixings present now are original. It does look like many have been added since she was raised in order to stablize the hull.

I'm on the fence about nailsas I'm afraid to make it look like a tank. I can see logic in leaving them out like Clayton did.
I think there's information about the original nails position. Alexander's scratch Vasa looks really great and realistic with nails, but in 1:75 it would be a challenge to get his fantastic results. I'm thinking it may be best to leave them out as I have no experience with them and focus on the painting on this build. Something to think about.

Jim, I would recommend adding the stealer as you have said (my reason for doing it as I did is that looking at the plans there seemed to be 4 or 5 full width planks between the Wale and the top of the Bulwark, and as I was changing from Dark Walnut to a much lighter coloured plank, and was 'showing' caulking, I wanted the Wales to run level with the bottom of the 4th or 5th strake all the way along. As I think your plan was to perhaps paint this area between Wale & Top of Bulwark then this isn't so vital (you mentioned liking the colour scheme of a previous Ballahoo build, which seems to be painted 'Nelson' yellow in this area, that's why I say this  )
The plank shaping as a consequence of this running the planks along the top is why I'm going so slowly at present, though they are beginning to run smoother as I go down (having said that though the bow still requires a little shaping to be done)

Nigel, I shall opt for the Add On Wale, which will be an extra plank run on top of the 2nd layer I'm doing now (2 plank widths wide) and shall be painted black, I'll be running another much narrower (2mm wide x 1mm thick) piece parallel between the Wale and the top rail which will also be painted black.

Hope all of that makes sense guys,

    Eamonn

Looking good Eamonn   Are you going for a add on wale,or one that goes through the second planking and is glued to the first?

    Photo Update Time... Taaa Daaaa!

Am just about at the level of the Wale on the Starboard side, few more to go on Port to catch up..
I had an extra plank on the stbd bow but wasn't happy with it to popped it straight back off (it needs to be shaped better)

The further down I go the quicker things will move as I move away from Scale Size planks and onto full length ones.

Anyhoo enough chat, here's the main event..
