Thank you both for your suggestions. They were very helpful. I am planning on building a model of this next year, and would like to read both books before beginning.

Sorry,I thought I would have a look around to no avail.I can't believe that this book has sold out, then again it went to press when the partwork of SOS started in the UK.I bought a copy when it was hot off the press.Depending on exactly what you want the book for,I found Hiendrik Busmanns book of more use. However this is very expensive and out of print.I waited 8months for a copy to come up at sensible money in the US and had it shipped to the UK.This book though is only available in German, however the wealth of illustrations of the carvings make it a worthwhile investment if you plan on modelling the vessel.

    Hi All,

Thanks to all everyone for the kind comments and the likes....I know I am repeating myself here, but all the encouragement is truly appreciated.

So over the past week, I managed to finish off the fore and mizzen mast shrouds.  Exactly the same process was used as for the main mast and thankfully with the practice, things went a bit faster. So, the Dragon's standing rigging is done and now it is on to making the sails...should be fun!

Thanks for reading and pics below as usual.

    Cheers,

    Hi everyone

I've managed to do a bit more on sanding and puttying Majellan's hull. I think the shapely lines are finally starting to emerge now, especially the beautiful flare in the bow. Not bad, I reckon!

Also, in case you're wondering why I haven't done the transom yet, it's because Majellan doesn't have a normal transom as in most boats. Instead, the real ship has a stern door which lcan be lowered to reveal a large storage area for the ship's tender and other assorted gear, such as scuba gear, etc. Needless to say, I'll tackle the stern door when the internal fit out starts.

Anyhow, here are the photos of the progress, so far.

    Cheers

    HI everyone

A very quick update on Magellan's hull - still lots of sanding and puttying to go before I can get the mirror smooth finish that I'm after.

Lots of work, but lots of fun to go!

    All the best everyone!

I see no reason why the ports cannot be shown open. The historical exactness of most kits, especially Italian ones can be dubious at the best of times. In the scratchbuild section is a model of LaCreole by Archjofo. This features Carronades and the ports you describe. His model is built to one of the monographs based on painstaking historical research,so it is safe to say this is an actual feature on French vessels. Here is one of the ports(hope Johann doesn't mind)

Hello Rob, sorry to hear about your father. I agree with Nigel , he has given you an excellent start. As far as i can see, you continue doing a great job. The Royal Caroline is one of my favorite ships.. I keep it on the shelf  from my next build. Surely i can learn some things from you.. I will follow along .. :)

Thanks for the likes and thanks for dropping by and posting encouraging notes. (;-)  Finishing up the fabrication of the foremast platform.

•Trimmed down the lower braces before mounting the first ring

•Then made the bits for the upper ring braces

•Used a divider point to simulate the small nails for the lower braces

    •Installed the 18 vertical bits

    •Added the rings

•Then with a rotary tool sanded down the protruding edges and tops

    +++++++++++++++++++++++

Next up, need to cut the 32 small bits to insert around periphery of the platform. Used the blue tape as a measure guide for all the cuts.

This second platform was easier than the first (bowsprit) I learned through experimenting with the first one. The upper fore, and the three mains should be a smooth build section.

Still mentally thinking of how to insert the shroud deadeyes and keeping the chainplate rope attachments within scale. Still a “?”

I wonder if just wrapping lower the deadeyes in tarred rope and running those eight ropes through the large flat ring would be “OK” ??

However I believe that the last pic IS how it should be Hmmmm

    Again, thanks for dropping by.

    Michael

    Hi Heinz

I think you are possibly reaching the limits of the timber.Other than trying to glue the pieces to a backer whilst carving, boxwood wood have probably been the only answer. This wouldn't have matched the other timber.
The scrolls look good and as you say only the purist will know the difference
Your first window is great, not an easy job especially in 1/72!!!!!!!!!

    Hello friends,

    another update from me.

This is the first time I am not totally happy and satisfied with the result. As I told you before I found out, that all the ornaments does not fit. So I had to build them on my own. I knew that this would be a big problem, cause I am not a sculptor.

I ordered some new and bigger strips of wood. Unfortunately they were notably brighter than all of my older strips. But the main problem was, that I had to find out that elderberry wood is not good for carving. Every time I tried to build smaller bows it breaks. You can see on the lower ornaments that I have to glue this parts. It doesn't look very clean.

I tried it several time, but the result was always the same. I came to the point to accept it and tried to build the upper ornaments in a different way. I made 2 big "S". They were too big to brake. Unfortunately they were too big to look good and to decorate them with leaves as you can see it on the real Victory. I tried to file a slit along the "S" to make them look smaller. Hmmm, it looks better but not good. I hoped that the look will change with the upper bows and the top ornament. And yes, I think I keep it as it is. It does not look like an exact copy of the real Victory. Otherwise it´s not so bad at all... What do you think? Please give me your honest opinions!

At least one thing: the top ornament is the one from the kit. I filed a little bit and painted it. I love it :-)))

    Have a nice weekend!

Thank you very much indeed Rob  I had a suspicion you avatar was based on the Snowberry kit,but sometimes size is hard to judge on the water from a small pic .
I would recommend to anyone who wanted to build a model of Caroline that accurately followed the book, they would have to scratchbuild. It is worth mentioning though that the book itself is a best 'guess' by the authors. Many details are not proven historical fact.Whichever route the builder takes, she builds into a very attractive model and I do feel the kit is one of Panart's better offerings.

I am sorry to hear of your Father's passing.Completing the model is a very nice tribute. He has given you an excellent start .
Regarding the ships launch,it is still the same one in the kit now.I built mine from scratch but it was a bit of a compromise as I wanted to use the kit's brass decoration. It looks more like the book version, just not as long .
I think if you try to follow the book too closely like myself and Janos tried to do,you realise there is alot amiss.Even the hull is the wrong shape,so I just used the book as a guide for some of the smaller details. My build is currently on hold as we are hoping to move house.I am at the stage where it is the fragile bits,so would rather wait until after the upheaval.
Is that a Flower class as your avatar?

    Hi all,

Just a little update. I've finished rigging the cannon (minus coiled rope that will be added right at the end of the build to keep the deck tidy while I do the rigging...

I've also been working a little on the starboard staircase. It's a fiddly little blighter, and I haven't decided whether I can live with the colour discrepancy between this one and the one already in situ - I think I must have used a different wood as it's much darker once varnished :S (see last picture)... I'll sleep on it and see how I feel about it in the morning. I suspect it's going to mean another re-work...

    Happy building

    Rob
