bdgiantman2 reacted to Mike Dowling in Yacht Mary by Mike Dowling - Mamoli
Frames on, decks on and frames faired.
Now, can someone please tell me how to put on the first strake. I always have a problem with this. The instructions say it should go on level with the deck (presumably the main deck ?) and follow the curve of it. This makes for a huge lateral bend apart from the lengthwise bend on that strake so please, someone guide me. I always have a problem with planking.

Hi all !
I am back with a new boat having had a break from them for a while. I picked this kit up on ebay for a fairly reasonable price. I had been looking for one for a while but only found Chinese copies so I was pleased when this came up.
It is the first Mamoli kit I have tried. First impressions - nicely packed but looks a bit minimal on wood. I am ok with that as I have some spares and I am always careful with usage. There are 7 sheets of plans which look ok but the instructions for the build, such as they are are on the plans. The plans are two sided but the instructions only on one side so a lot of turning required. Otherwise castings and wood quality look good.

bdgiantman2 reacted to AVBiker in Yacht Mary by AVBiker - Mamoli - 1:54 - Semi Scratch
The upper part of stern is complete. The "R" in the middle was a little problem. It is only 3.8mm high.

The Kabine in the middle of the ship has 14 windows. All windows to produce exactli is very difficult.
My Version is a easy one to made many windows copy.

The round gunports from Mamoli are not very good. I make my version, a little bit smaler and difficiler.
The plan from Mamoli is not correct. The print from VdVelde dJ looks a closed window with decoration and not 2 other windows. So my Mary is make as VdVelde print and Mary as museum.

The next step: i have set many, many wooden nails to the hull and the stern. The scupper are made and the hatch on the halfdeck and not a companion hatch. A little bit of color is painting.
Next step is the decorationes from the stern.
Greetings Hubert

Great work-especially the planking-very neat indeed! Look forward to seeing more photos of your build.
I'm building the Mamoli kit and as you say-information about the original Yacht Mary is difficult to find.
Mamoli seem to have based their design mainly on the Witsen drawing, and maybe a sketch by Willem Van de Velde the Younger.
The model at Greenwich does have a number of shortcomings;there is a nicer model made by Robert Spence in Trinity House,London.
Here is a link to a photo of Mr.Spence's model : https://www.flickr.com/photos/69223798@N03/14226543172/in/album-72157644746542821/
Also-I found this image online which may have come from the studios of Willem Van de Velde the Younger, which shows an interesting colour scheme.Hope this is of interest.

				bdgiantman2 reacted to Omega1234 in SHADOW by Omega1234 - FINISHED - Scale 1/300 - Luxury 60m Mega Yacht
Thanks Mark!
She’s sure tiny, but at the same time, Shadow’s been one hell of a challenge to pull together. Heaps of fun, though!
All the best.

				bdgiantman2 reacted to Omega1234 in SHADOW by Omega1234 - FINISHED - Scale 1/300 - Luxury 60m Mega Yacht
Hi folks!!!
I hope everyone had a great Xmas and NewYear break.
Well...she's getting there, folks. Please see the following photos. I'm finally getting the paint finish on Shadow's superstructure just the way I envisioned; i.e. glassy smooth, unblemished, glossy and crisp. I know that it's hard to tell from these photos, but i reckon she's looking pretty good.
Also, I've worked hard to get the hull nice, smooth and glossy as well. I gotta say, that the gold hull is starting to really pop now.
Have a great week!
Cheers

Happy New Year everyone!!!!!
Firstly, my apologies for not being able to comment on many build logs lately, as I’ve not really had much time....hopefully this will change in the future.
Secondly, I’m still chasing that elusive perfectly smooth and unblemished paint job on Shadow’s superstructure. Sadly, the more I look at the close-up photos of Shadow, the more I realise that I’ve still got a lot of work to go. Oh well......give it time and I’ll get it ‘just right’.
Anyhow, have a great 2018!!!!
Cheers.

bdgiantman2 reacted to Jim Lad in Albertic by michael mott - FINISHED - Scale 1:100 - RESTORATION - Bassett-Lowke Model
Curious use of flags, Michael.
The following link is to an actual Oceanic Steam navigation Company house flag at the NMM at Greenwich - I think your blue version must be an incorrect addition by an earlier restorer - I can't see Bassett Lowke making that error!
http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/408.html
The American flag would be a 'courtesy' ensign. The ensign of the country that a ship was visiting. This is also, in my opinion, a later addition, unless the model was built for an American company office, in which case they may have included the courtesy ensign.
The blue ensign is definitely in the wrong place - again, I can't see Bassett Lowke making this error.
The red ensign is in the correct place flying from the ensign staff at the stern and is the correct British Merchant Navy ensign, however the blue ensign would have been flown if the ship's master and a certain proportion of his officers were Naval Reserve officers. It was the practice of many major shipping companies to insist on their officers being in the naval reserve, but I'm afraid I don't know whether this was the case with White Star (some companies thought that the flying of the blue ensign gave their ships a bit of extra 'swank'.

bdgiantman2 reacted to michael mott in Albertic by michael mott - FINISHED - Scale 1:100 - RESTORATION - Bassett-Lowke Model
Hi Colin
Happy new year to you Sir.
Colin I have just finished reading a a fair bit of information regarding the ship and shipping lines that are associated with this model.
Turns out that it was a rather interesting. source information from Wikipedia
1. keel laid in Germany in 1914
2. halted construction during WW1
3. launched in 1920 as München
4. handed over to the British as a war reparation before entering service
5. she was immediately sold to the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company
6. She was renamed the Ohio and began service in 1923
7. in 1927 she was sold to the White Star Line , and renamed the Albertic
8. she served the north Atlantic route between Britain and Canada from 1927 until 1930
9. The Albertic was laid up in the River Clyde
10. she was eventually broken up for scrap in japan in 1934
One of the things i am curious about are the flags that were on the model, the masthead flag on the foremast although almost completely faded to white appears to have been an American flag
the one at the masthead of the aft mast was the disintegrating blue flak of the white stare line, although the white star lines official flag appears to have been red
The flag on the small staff off the aft mast was a very faded blue ensign
and the flag on the stern flag post is a red ensign that does not appear to be of the correct proportions
My guess is that all these flags have been put on this model during various repairs by well meaning people to make it look "good" I somehow doubt that this combination would have been carried out by Bassett Lowke, but I could be completely wrong in my hypothesis.
What to Do?
Michael

				bdgiantman2 got a reaction from Elijah in Utrecht 1746 by flying_dutchman2 - FINISHED - Scale 1:48 - Dutch Statenjacht
I have been wondering that same question involving my model of Yacht Mary. That is, of course, if such metal work was even being done at that time. Even though Mary was a century earlier than Utrecht, I have read that the design and build of the Statenjachts varied little during that time. My two books about the Utrecht never said anything about those metal pieces. Been wanting to get that other book from Sea Watch about the early Dutch sailing ships.
