I feel for you Robbyn.  It's no fun to not build boats, but soon we hope.

Here are a few shots of the lanterns and other areas fore and aft, showing the fiber optics and yellow LEDs.
For now I have the wires attached to a 9 volt battery, but will be installing a proper switch box later.

Finally, a long overdue update! I started out well with photos of each step and then as life got busy the photos fell by the way. The last few pictures are of each completed piece without process pictures.

I experimented with a few different materials for the stern lanterns, but finally settled on card. The lanterns could not be solid because of the fiber-optics that I had to feed up through the tiny brass tubing and into the lanterns. This was a very tricky process due to the tight fit and bends. I'll try to add some pictures in the next day or so with the lanterns "lit".

And placed on deck. I also completed the first of three sets of spiral staircases.

I also managed to make and place some of the decorative pieces and dolphins.

Last, but not least, a shot of the stern so far and profile.

Thanks for the "like", the comments and looking....

    Here's the current state...

The wale (wide) planking is complete on the port side.  Work is continuing on the starboard side.  I've temporarily tacked in place the garboard strakes in order to measure the remaining area for the "normal" planking strips.  I'm also sorting out how many battens I'll need...  I'm thinking probably 3 of about 8-10 planks between battens..

At this point, I know I'm going to need drop planks and stealers since various monographs show them...  I'm assuming this was the normal method for the French ships and not the monograph author's but haven't been able to verify it.

Click on the image to enlarge and as always ideas for improvement are welcomed.

Time to work on my Syren, I do so wish I could find it. Unfortunately the gutting of my house continues. Kitchen is done finally, and bathroom has begun. Things have slowed to a crawl. My husband only gets every other weekend off, and we screwed that schedule up by taking 2- 2 week vacations, which meant if we were home he was working. I so want to work, but at the moment I can't even get to my drydock. It has become the staging area for all the home improvements.

I wasn't going to post this photo of the QD main rail but it keeps 'calling' me.

Note the simulated sheaves in the lower stanchions.  The lower rail is doubled to produce a nice beaded effect whereas the upper is a single so as not to make it too massive.  I left it in natural finish (rather than the suggested black) as I'm going with black for all the belaying pins and, against the swiss pear deck, we see a nice contrast.

Onward to the long forgotten bow!

Been a bit since that last update... I stripped off 5 strakes of planking at the stern and reworked it with some help in the form of advice and mentoring from Dan and Druxey.  They set me straight and on the right path.   I'll do a bit more sanding (still rough only for now) and then turn the hull around and to the other side.  I did some templates and the shapes look pretty close so I think that side will go a bit quicker.  I shouldn't have to plank, rip off the planks, sand and then replank several times...

I have a dummy fashion piece held in with the blue pin to get the plank ends correct and I'll be fitting the real thing later. I'm not too worried about the plank ends being 100% squared up as there's a reasonably wide covering trim plank that will go over them.  Besides, isn't it supposed to be deal with one headache at a time.

I just noticed....my work area is beyond messy... sorry.

Thanks for the comments, the help, and the support.  Back to motoring on and making sawdust.

That and also vacation makes me out of the house for a while.
But I slowly pick up the the build again.

    did some rigging today,

today feeding lines from the knight-head through single blocks to the dolphin striker, not much achieved but enjoyable

the spiritsail lower yard is temporary pinned to ensure i don't do anything stupid in the months ahead

getting a little confused though how the spirit top saill is going to be fitted, imo the cloth would be snagged by the lines passing through the dolphin striker towards the top of the Jib
anyway - i am sure i will find an answer

    Hammock Cranes

The Hammock Cranes are J shaped and are bolted to the quarterdeck planksheers with two bolts. The holes for these will be a trick to drill with the quarterdeck rail and shrouds already in place. I should have done this a LONG time ago   .

I started by flattening the section above the planksheer and drilling the holes on the mill. The posts are all overlength for now :

Next I made a simple jig that fits into my vise to get an even bend into each post :

The posts are all of varying heights, with the longest ones forward. To cut them to size I taped the pieces to my bench and drew a pencil line at the point where they needed trimming :

Some of the bends are not quite right, but this doesn't matter at this stage as they will probably finish up getting bent a bit when fitting them. Final adjustments will be easy enough to do after fitting :

Short pieces of tubing were silver soldered on next. These will take the passing ropes. Making them oversize made it easier to solder them on straight. An easy job to file them flush later on :

    Continued next post ....

    ..... continued

The "bolts" were the last things to add. I started with two long pieces of wire and soldered them into the holes :

I cut the inner bolt flush as drilling both holes will be nearly impossible. One pin will suffice to hold the stanchion in position until the epoxy dries :

Finally the cranes were blackened :

    Thank you John.

    Waist Rails

I have a fair bit more "Iron" work in front of me. The first are the stanchions for the Waist Rails.

The rail itself is timber. It sits inside U shaped brackets atop the stanchions. I cut the brackets from sheet brass using the table saw and soldered them to the wire posts. The uneven thicknesses on the sides of the brackets were filed to size after soldering :

There are also two stanchions that take the entry ropes. I soldered a piece of small tubing to the tops of them to form the eyes that take the ropes :

A quick update. I've started on the curved cupboard which sits on the starboard side of the saloon. Aft of the curved cupboard sits the navigation station.

Still lots of work to go.

    Hope you enjoy.

    .... continued

To make the swivel brackets I flattened some 1.2mm wire. This would have been easier with 1.6mm x 0.8mm brass strip, but I didn't have any. To get some meant a 2 hour drive, and I flattened the wire in a couple of minutes :

Next I drilled 0.85mm holes 9mm apart and cut the pieces to length. The ends were rounded :

I partially bent the strap using needlenose pliers :

A piece of 1.0mm wire was soldered to the strap and then the unit was fitted to the trunions. This was not as difficult as I'd feared. The guns can pivot up and down as the straps aren't soldered to the barrels :

Finally the guns were blackened :

    Swivel Guns

There are 16 1/2 pound Swivel Guns on the Quarterdeck and Forecastle. I am only going to fit the 8 on the port side.

I turned the barrels on the lathe using the tapering attachment. A 0.9mm hole was drilled for the Bore, and another 1.2mm hole for the handle. Then I drilled a 0.8mm hole for the trunions :

To make the handle I found it easier to file the taper and knob than to try and do it in the lathe - my wire was too soft and the attempt at cutting it on the lathe took 1/2 an hour and still didn't come out right. Filing them took 5 minutes each. I started by tapering the shaft first :

Then I cut the piece to length, reversed it in the pin vise and filed the knob to shape :

The handle and trunions were then silver soldered in :

    Hi Guys,

    Time for another update.

A lot has happened since my last post not least the loss of my pictorial record of the build, it just disappeared. I searched my Laptop to the best of my ability but no luck, fortunately I still have them on my phone but because they had already been downloaded the laptop didn't want to copy the pictures, several hours later I have managed to recover 215 pictures plus the latest photos, I just have to organise them into some sort of order.

OK, progress made so-far is as follows:- Waterways ( Box )  are made and fitted, Spirketing ( Redheart ) made and fitted and the Deck Planking ( Holly ) has been laid and drilled out for treenails. The Bulwarks ( Redheart ) have been fitted and made ready for drilling out for the bolts, this will have to wait until the deck is treenailed and given a coat of WOP.

I mustn't forget the rings on the hatch have been changed to smaller ones.

Time for some pictures I hope.

Waterway and Spirketing on the Starboard side

    The Portside

    Portside Bulwarks

    Starboard Bulwarks

The deck planks were cut to size and black paper glued to one side for Caulking.

The first seven planks have been laid, the first plank alongside the waterway required tapering.

The next three pics are of the completed planking and drilled out ready for the treenails, (a mix of sanding dust).

So that's where I am at the moment, still behind the boss and nowhere near catching up, I have been busy watching the cricket though, oooops.

That's it for now gents, any and all comments, remarks and criticisms are welcome.

Has taken about 6 weeks to enjoy our vacation and then address some domestic and minor health issues.  But I've finally gotten the shipyard up and running once again.

Decided to finish up the guns on the QD.  There are only four 4 pounders due to the layout of the open decking.  Once again, the brass cannon were supplied by Chuck's Syren company and they're a perfect fit for the kit-supplied carraiges.  No need to detail the construction process again.

I need to finish up one railing on the QD before I move to the bow planking.  Will be operating on a reduced 'summer schedule' for a time......but it feels great to be back 'home'.

Here's hoping the summer has been going well for all those here up North. It's been fun following everyone's progress.
