    Thanks Mobbise, Mark and Ben.

    A minor update tonight......

    Construction: Gauges continued

Continuing development of the gauges, I came across another idea from the RC Forum – instant domed gauge glasses!

Yes, they’re “googly eyes”.  A few minutes on the sanding block to remove the backing and reduce the diameter to just fit the gauges and you have:

The plastic is not quite as clear as I would like, so not sure yet whether I’ll go with this in the end.  I have another alternate method to try yet……..

yes sorry, I should have explained a bit better.......
The pic now should be self explaining. The sample bag foot button in the middle still has the fastening device..

And finally the capping rail is complete and ready for final sanding.

I put the outer edge of the rail in as a series of short lengths - approx 30cm long - 3 per side. This felt easier to manage than glueing and clamping the whole thing in one go.

I finished with a very slight dip where the stern rail joined the side rail. I tried to ignore it but failed. I then tried to fill the indent by overlaying it with infill planks and then sanding back. I still wasn't happy - so eventually I cut it out.

    And replaced it.........

I then tried to ignore that it didn't match the other side. I failed so had to replace the good side as well.

    Eventually all was done.

I think next I'll have a go at the rudder.

Thank you Nils - not quite on the scale of your Kaiser but quite satisfying never the less. Loved your screws - which prompted me to have a go on Altair.

I made a little more progress on the capping rail along the length of the hull. At about .300 inch wide the rail was much too stiff to bend to follow the curvature of the deck edge. I was pretty certain I would be able to bend a rail of half the thickness and so decided to make the width from two planks. I had the option of trying to lay up the rail on top of the plan but decided to form the rail by mounting it directly on the bulwark.

Having cut mahogany strip (.080 x .300 inch) I needed to round the edges. I was considering making a scraper in the form of a "U" and using this on the plank edge to generate the half round...............however i hit upon a simpler solution....................the back of the knife blade.

Mounting the half rail on top of the ribs necessitated drilling and pining the rail to secure it in place while the PVA dried.

I did have slip and a break which required repair.

    More deck planking:-

I made a start on the planking which follows the contour of the deck edge. As explained previously these planks are much narrower. I made the planks .108 inch wide x 10 inch long which is 3.5 inch by 26 foot at full size.

It's probably worth posting a few images of the real thing at this point:-

I wanted the deck to be representative of the real thing but accepted that absolute accuracy wasn't quite achievable.

So here are a few images of progress to date:-

I was progressing well until my helper arrived and demanded some exercise!

Update pics. Have finally got what is my favorite and easiest part the rigging and setting the yards. Had numerous ups and downs wish I had  been more diligent int the beginning with the badly warped decks and stern gallery pieces should have cut new ones instead of trying to flatten and use the warped ones, had to order numerous items that were missing strops dead eyes line lumber on and on . Any way got past all that did the shrouds and ratlines twice got past that, three broken mast tops (mamas adorable babies     cats) 1 broken mast top with rigging installed got past that (an I dealing with the Titanic. Oh a note for manufacturers in your directions gun port lids should not be installed in the beginning  of a build but at the end so a dummy like me will not knock them off like I did (16 off and re a fix)   By the way the pic of mans best friend Mack the Dane 10 yrs. Charlie the Dachshund 15 blind cataracts Mack takes care of Charlie he doesn't bump into too many walls both have the arthritis. Thought they would take care of my  3 cat problems, sadly they all sleep together will have to take care of Mamas precious     little babies myself

I found the rudder profile didn't blend very smoothly with the hull and keel which to me looked wrong. I adjusted the shape slightly as per photos.

Re your question about how the planking will look at the gunnel line. This is the best photo of the planking that I have. If you zoom in and look closely you can see many of the planks and even some of the end to end abutments.

    Hi Julie

Its a bit late here so this may be a little brief.

My concern about the dinghy is that with only the bow and transom secured the planks will have a tendency to spring back to their former flat shape when removed from the frames. I had thought of trying to get a mid section frame in place to prevent this. I thought clinker might be better as the overlapping of the planks would give extra stiffness. I shaped the frames with a small sanding block. It took an hour or so. I think nailing is a bit optimistic as my guess is that the ends of the planks will split. I would be inclined to rely on glue but if you do nail I think pre drilling will be necessary.

In my kit the dowels were half rounds and the mast dowels were staggered so the end joint was only ever half of the mast thickness. I had 5 half rounds from which to form the mast (2 half lengths and one full length on one side and 2 full lengths on the other) I found the segmented mast had the benefit of allowing me to get it very straight. I did hunt for a dowel long enough to avoid jointing but the ones I found all had an unacceptable degree of bend. You refer to 3 dowels - is your kit different to mine? I agree end jointing of 3 dowels would be useless.

The romance of your dock vision is compelling. Can you build a bar on it please?

I often sit on deck after a long day at sea (usually in the rain if its Scotland) sorting through the rats nest of lines that my fellow crew members have abandoned in favour of their gin and tonics. I get a bit OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) about rats nests. The practical point however is that lines dropped on a deck tend to collapse relatively flat to the deck as their weight overcomes the stiffness in the line. At model scale the opposite is true and the stiffness overcomes the weight. The result is that they stick up at odd angles and don't look very realistic. You might want to experiment before deciding which way to go.

    Goodnight

Thanks for all the "likes" and comments.  After getting everything else around the house done and then getting the new mill set up, i'm busily planking the lower deck.

The first six strakes are finally in and I'm happy with them although there's some serious sanding in my future as they aren't all the same thickness...    But I've sorted out the planking scheme that I need to lay down.  This deck is all 1 foot wide and 4" thick planking.  It's actually thicker then the gundeck which is 3" thick but mostly not as wide.  I'll fight that battle when I get to the gundeck as there are some varying widths and thicknesses there.

For the lower deck, as near as I can find, the planks are all run pretty much the same width from fore to aft with hook scarfs at the bow and some tapering at the stern.  I'm going full width but with the partitions fore and aft, I'm not planking much beyond them...  One reason is that the Admirals Plaque is behind the aft partition in the gunroom.

    Here's a pic.
