Here are the three deck levels, but the assembly starts at the orlop level.

I know some baulk at the thought of using MDF (I did to begin with, if I am honest), but it is the perfect non-varying thickness of quality MDF that allowed me to think of such designs. Plywood thickness is never constant, if I used that, this assembly would have been a disaster, some hulls may end up being a few mm higher than they should, and some a lot lower, as ply thickness can vary from 5.6-6.4 for 6mm thickness. The structural integrity of this hull is very strong, plus all gun ports already worked into the hull structure, so no guessing or marking out needed.

The way this is designed is that you can build up to one deck level and detail it very easily without obstruction, and when complete, build up the next level and do the same, like a layer cake.

ETA - Even all of the gun port sills and gun port lids were pre-cut to fit each individual gun port.

Here is a drawing of the stern, with all the PE parts in place. In the kit, there is an option for how you want to show the windows. You can have them open, part open or closed. If some are open, you can peer through them and just make out the deck detail along the hull.

The balustrades in between the window tiers have the exact same number as the real thing. I taken a lot of pictures of the stern when at Portsmouth, and imported the best into my CAD program, and then traced the outlines of the decoration so it should be all a near exact match for the real thing. I know that one version of Victory has these parts all out of proportion, I didn't want anything to stand out that may be wrong..

Also, on my visit, I noted that the poop screen bulkheads have hinges at the top, presumably to fold the bulkheads up and stowed under the poop deck when cleared for action. I threw out the old version of the bulkheads I had already made up and replaced them with the new ones with better detail.

All ports cut now, and ribs removed from inside bulwarks, so now I'm ready to paint.

Looking at splitting the kit to make it more cost effective over a period of time for modellers. Good idea I reckon. Will let  Emilio  from Amati explain more. He said he will make a post here to explain further.

Amati own the rights, they paid me to design it for them, so it is 100% Amati's kit. I have got more pics, also, if you do a search on MSW, there is a long thread that is full of development updates with lots of Victory pictures I took. I have added the one with my step daughter (she'll be pleased I dug that one up), so you can get an idea of the size. Most other pics are in the large format (for the building manual), so too big to post.

ETA - I have added a couple of (very bad) pics I took when I delivered the Victory model to Amati, she is sitting next to Vanguard.

I will definitely contact them. Given you designed her, drew the scale plans etc. do you still retain any ownership to the model? Could you not sell her as part of your current venture? As for cost; Amati are kidding themselves if they think junkies like us wont spend the big bucks on things of rare quality and beauty such as this! Sure, its not a kit that will fly out the door in the hundreds, but I bet more than a few on here alone would buy it.

Any chance you could maybe post a few more pics of your design in stages/completion? Fully understand if for copyright reasons etc. you cannot. Thanks for your work.

    Cheers

Wow! Thank you for these pics Chris. Any idea if/when a release date? Price etc? How come if you completed the proto type 4 years ago she still isn't released? What would be the overall dimensions of such a beast? Sorry for all the questions. Stunning work! I want one!

Overall, she is 1.6 metres long. It dominated my large dining table when finished her. There are no dummy barrels on this one, all fully detailed carriages with full length cannon. There should be a thread with a lot more pics somewhere on here.

I do not work for Amati any longer, so cannot tell you when it will be released. What I do know is that I did complete everything, designs, instructions, manual, plans. I think Amati are worried the kit will cost too much, but I suspect it would still sell. But, as I said, I no longer work there, it may be an idea to email them, asking for it to be released - it would be nice, as that development was two full years of my life. Even took a trip to Portsmouth to take my own research pics.

The ultimate Victory kit is the 1:64 unreleased Amati kit, designed by Chris Watton.

That thing is epic, and I'm trying to convince Amati to get off the fence and actually release it!

I'm sure @chris watton could give you more info...

FINALLY I completed the installation of vertical reinforcements and the channels !!!!!!!

Here below I submit you a series of images on both sides of the hull, some with more detail.

I have now two/three days while planning the next activities, then I'll restart again. Greetings, Jack.

I've finished the second planking now and have applied 3 coats of varnish, but . . .

The instructions puzzle me, because they call for finish painting of the hull, coppering, and applying decorative wood strips to the outside before cutting the ports and sanding the inside bulwarks.  That seems to me to be a prescription for messing up the hull work.  So I haven't done the final sand on the varnish or painting or coppering yet, and as you can see I'm cutting the ports now.  Tough to get those square and lined up with each other.

Then I'll remove the ribs and sand the inside bulwarks, and THEN I'll paint it and copper it.  I'm only going to paint down to just below the waterline, so that the coppering (for which my plan is to use tape) will have a better surface to adhere to.

One of you who has done the Cutty Sark before will likely tell me that I've made a serious sequence error, but it doesn't seem like it.  Just another "look ahead" lesson.

    Regards,
    David

Activities are still focused around the hull of the Carrack.

At the end I decided it was better to continue with the installation of the wales and the vertical reinforcements and this week I focused my efforts on this objective.

The most demanding activity of course was to install the wales: on Monday I installed (obviously on both sides) the upper wale while on Tuesday I installed the two others below.

Today I was able to proceed with the vertical reinforcements, something much simpler but more boring. At the moment on the side highlighted by the photos here attached there are still two of them missing, the ones that support the fore channel.

I plan to finish both sides by the end of this week.

    Sincerely, Jack.

Some pictures of the rear compartment. First, I had to take care of the stringer located in the rear. Because of the support I installed with the brass deck and cutout plastic deck, the stringer did not fit. The part provided by Trumpeter is not prototypical no matter what, and thus it does not make too much of an impact to modify it. It is invisible anyway:

The picture shows the original part. Because of the realistic pressure hull end, it has to be modified to follow the convex shape. The original submersible had four stringers on the stern, as shown in the following pictures:

Finally, some shots of the almost finished rear compartment. It is by far the most complicated to assemble, with the propeller shafts, rudder commands and the extremely tight fit of that compartment in the stern.

I still have to glue the torpedo outside door and install a rod for the control.

    I hope you like it.

Using water and heat will achieve the same results 100 times quicker. Amati has a great soldering iron plank bender. I use that for all my bending needs. I am sure others will have their favourite methods as well, but it really comes down to soaking the wood to make it pliable, then heating it to achieve the desired shape. Once the wood is then cooled it will hold the shape.

Hey Dave, I find I use a small modelling hammer all the time, depending on your eyesight, some magnifying tools may be useful too. Pin vises are always necessary, and you can NEVER have enough clamps of any size!

In my opinion, some of the fancy rigging/ratline tools/frames are a waste of money. A good selection of small chisels come in handy, and if I had any money left over I would probably stock up on sandpaper of various grades and different types of tape for masking and holding.

And what CDW said; definitely invest in a good plank bender!

    Cheers

    Hi Jean Paul,
I used the wood provided by Marisstella (in practice only walnut strips) just as first planking for decks (for the hull I used limewood, better suitable for this task than walnut).
As second planking I used wood not included in the kit (tanganika and cherry veneer).

    Hi Chris,
this model has originally born as a single planking hull. The strips provided for this task were walnut of 4x1.5mm. As first idea I tryed to follow this single planking goal but I found it very difficult and unpractical to pursuit and very soon I changed my mind and decided for the double planking. The first plaking was done with 5x1,5mm limewodd and the second with cherry veneer 0,4mm. Considering the particular shape of this hull, specially at bow, this was a very good choice, at least for my skills and taste.

I found the veneer at a wood wholesaler near the town of Pisa (Italy). It is sold as in the pictures here below as linear meters. You can easily obtain strips at your choice by using a common cutter in cojuction with a spacer and a metal ruler to cut strips at the proper height.

Regarding a basic and upgraded kit from Marisstella I cannot answer 'cause I don't know, I bought the kit more than a year ago. Regards, Jack.
