A few hours of cutting and bending, the support struts for the rear deck.

For some reason Pontos does not replace the ladders, maybe they did but there is no reference.

The struts in the kit come in one piece, but this is really nice and they fit perfectly. I have added the 4 aftermarket support struts to go under the triple 25mms from the hull as Tamiya do provide some but they are not perforated.

From these close ups you can see the hull lines and the deadyeyes that go over the portholes that are nicely detailed.

Thank you for your comments, and for the likes. Both much appreciated

Yesterday evening, I finished the single 25mm AA guns, and am halfway a twin 13mm AA gun. From the latter ... there are only two, after this, chimney or the admiral's apartments to change the way my eyes cross.
(The fly is for size )

When you look at the twin and both single AA guns those 13mm are quite small compared to the 25mm single barreled. didn't expect that

Nearly forgot, I received two sets of clear plastic planes for this build

    Cheers

These are my foremast yards all ready to put the rigging on. I have the sling temporarily on the lower yard and am working on the rest of the rigging. Lots of knots, serving, and seizing going on.

I want to install as much as I can before it must the yards to the masts. I have small pins in the yards to help hold them on the masts. These pins are just for alignment and will NOT BE GLUED. That way if my big hands get in the way and break something I won't have unglue them.

You can never go wrong with swiss pear it always looks good, although, I would have a hard time painting or staining it. Mostly because I don't have a huge slab of it in my shop

I'm looking ahead to masting and rigging.  I'll need to fabricate the masts from scratch.  They are 5/16" diameter at the base and this size is not generally commercially available.  I don't want to use the walnut supplied in the kit because of the big pore/wide open grain.  My choice is down to cherry or swiss pear.  The areas of the mast doublings will be dyed black.  Black spars will definitely be made of swiss pear, natural spars of birch.  Because of the black doublings, I'm leaning toward swiss pear for the masts.  Any opinions?

Hey Mike, Thanks for stopping in. The stove stays on deck, I am still unsure as how I will secure it as I would think it might have been portable. The coin I just heated it up pounded it with hammer until thin enough then just shaped over a 1/2" steel rod. I should have taken some pictures. If I get the chance I will do it again and document

A stove - what a cool detail! Will it live on deck or below? What did you use to punch out the coin?

That windlass is fantastic! Thanks for sharing the tip you learned with the squared nail. Might have to use that one myself next time.

Loving it! The details! Your work is commendable. Windlass details down to the square peg holes are a nice added touch and that brass pot sitting on your stove is pretty nice too.
    Keep the pics coming mate....

    A little update:

Grates for ship's stove, just brass rod ca'd together

    The pieces for stove

Completed, added handles and hangers. The pot is a flattened out penny with brass rods soldered on for handles

    And some more:

Installing knightheads( 3 x 3 mm) and top timbers

There are waterways to be installed, mine kept splitting on me so I spread some ca on them to strengthen them, and as you can see it bled though to the good side. Time to make new ones.

Then I decided rather than cutting out notches for all the top timbers in the waterway and going through more frustration I will install them on top of the waterway so..............

then I decided it was time for a change...the windlass. This was made from cherry turned on the lathe what you see here is the fourth attempt, I also replaced the supports and made them from cherry also.

This showing the filed down nail used to make the holes square. This is an idea I got from DocBlake.

Gluing .5 x 1 mm strips onto drum

The finished product, still needs one or two more coats of wipe on poly. The fancy ends are inspired by B.E.'s cathead decoration on his Pegasus

    Thanks for stopping by

Thanks, guys.  The bell came with the kit - I just redesigned and rebuilt the belfry.  As to the catheads, since the deck is bowood, I'd like a little more contrast.  The quarterdeck and poop deck railings are going to be rosewood, so maybe having the catheads rose wood is too much.  I'm leaning toward the swiss pear.

I'm trying to decide what wood to use fashioning the catheads .  My choices are boxwood, Rosewood, swiss pear or the stock walnut.  Here are two photos of the deck furniture set in place.  What do you all think?  I'm leaning rosewood vs. boxwood.

I completed two sets of bitts - one for each mast - and the ship's belfry (which also has running rigging belayed to it). I also finished the quarterdeck stairs.  The plans call for a stairway on each side between the gun ports as well as boarding steps on the exterior hull above the wales.  Neither Halifax, Sultana nor Chaleur had this feature, so I'm not adding the boarding stairs to this model, either!   Next are the elm tree pumps, the catheads and the cannons.

After glueing the gun- and sweepports I spend a remarkable time sanding the hull and bevelling the bulkheads. This finishes stage 1 in the construction manual. The hull is now ready for first planking.

One thing about having a spare, is the ability to practice. Given the size of the hull I just cannot freehand a line perfectly strait for 60cm.

My plan is to do black lines to represent the armour plates and the lateral lines for the frames, which work at at 17mm x 10mm.

After three days I've figured out correct pressures to use the Vajello paints, now it a lesson in filling in the blanks and layering/modulating. The plan is to have visible plates on the hull, and unlike the new kit which has scribed armour plating the old kit does not so I can just respray and start from scratch until I get it right.
