The Pontos ones are mini kits in themselves, with etch and brass rod, not easy to put together, but neither is it impossible. Comes together beautifully, and I have left the lid off for the moment for ease of painting. It just requires soft hands.

Next will be the crane, sans the Arial which was taken off before the final mission.

First post of the year. I spent yesterday doing up the 2 catapults. The kit provided one is fairly simple, and as you can see from the AOTS, it is a bit more detailed than this.

    Hello once again, Everybody...
Bluenose has finally been completed.  It took quite awhile to receive the proper flag from a Canadian resource but it arrived today and was quickly attached to its proper place.  The cradle and nameplate are finished also and all that remains is the arrival of the display case.
I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and look forward to meeting you all again when the new project begins.

    Best,

    Jerry

    Hello Bob,
It was very nice of you to visit my log and pay the compliments you did.  I certainly appreciate what you had to say.  I have visited your log and am very impressed with the detail you have chosen to exercise and your model looks great.  As I have said in the past, the practicum has its value but turned a very fine scale model into a beginner's build.  When I first looked at the kit plans i thought to myself that here's a model with beautiful detail if one chooses to take one's time and complete  the project with care.  Choosing to follow Bob Hart's practicum is one way  (leave out much of the detail)... or build like you have, the complete way.
Thanks again for what you have said and the best to you on completing your Bluenose.
    Jerry

At last post I had 3 strakes per side to install.  These proved to be the most difficult of the entire job!  The hull is finally planked!  A major milestone.

Overall I'm happy with the results, especially at the bow and amidships.  The stern could have turned out better with more uniformity in the terminal widths of the planking, but I did the best I could given the weird geometry of the hull aft of the final bulwark.

Next up is treenailing, then fairing the hull.  Once that's all done I'll turn to completely rebuilding the transom and figure out a way to install the fashion pieces at the stern

That looks pretty good. Looks like 2 or 3 more strakes left.

Only 3 more strakes on each side to complete and the hull planking is done!  No joggle planks (drop planks) were used at all, and I only needed one stealer per side at the stern to start the rise of the planking to match the shear.  This was a difficult hull to do, but I learned a lot.

The run of the planking looks very good, especially as it turns up towards the tuck. Good job fairing that area.

With the Christmas holiday past, I'm back planking the hull.  The shape is really weird, and is requiring some very interesting custom planks.  At the stern, I'll need another stealer, or a plank that "widens" at the end of it's run to get the stern planked properly.  The final strake will be custom fit, and I'm going to try to arrange it so that it's made up of three planks, not just two.  The fitting will be easier that way.

Looking good Elijah!  I see you got the poster board for a clean background.

For everybody following Elijah's build I want to tell you that when he comes to the local club meetings he is always asking how to do something in a better way and takes all the club members, as your suggestions/help, to heart.  He's well on his way to tackling much tougher subjects.  It's great to see his progress.

Keep up the good work Elijah.

So, I did up the gun tubs for the 12-7cm AA guns, added footrails and splinter bags, which will be a nightmare when I add the support struts for these as they cover the bases. All dryfitted, lots of details to go but this is a fairly significant milestone.

    Happy Christmas all.

Thanks folks, Slog, as tempting as some of the 1/200 stuff is as thery are very detailed, it's what they leave out. I've got a great collection of spares now at this scale and to go up a grade would mean I'm starting from scratch so to speak. Pontos does not seem able to do doors (hatches)!

That being said Eduard which is pretty ordinary does great individual stanchions with actual chain for their handrails in 1/350 which in reality is 1/200 so worth getting as few ships have metal rails.

It's good to see I'm tapping into the dark interests of the wooden ship builders. Whilst I would like to build the Bluejacket Atlantic the amount of corrections needed to their one piece hull may be better suited to POB.

I'm now working on the side assemblies for the added anti air guns, then there will be a massive amount of tiny guns to build, plus the cranes.
