I finished the stern lights, glued them in place and gave them a coat of poly.  Only the catheads and rigging the anchor to complete!

I started working on the stern lights in the great cabin.  The kit includes five 3-D printed lights that look fine, but I wanted mine made of wood.  My first decision was, "what color?"  The kit-supplied lights are white, so I made up a mockup out of holly.  Because my mockup was a little beefier than the kit parts, the white holly seemed way too much.  I settled on boxwood.  The first step was to cut a few strips of 1/32" thick boxwood to 1/16" in width.  I then traced the outline of the kit lights on a piece of paper and covered the drawing with double sided tape.  The frames are made in two layers.  I laid out the first layer on the double sided tape and used CA to glue the second layer to the first.  It's important that the second layer have spans that cover each butt joint of the first layer.  If not, the frames fall apart.  The crude drawing in the photo is the layout for the 2 layers that make up the frames.  There are 18 parts per frame!  They need to be cleaned up and fitted to their place on the stern, but overall I'm happy with the result.  It was actually easier than I thought it would be!  Two more to go.

    Well done, Elijah.

You're doing a brilliant job on this ship. And, what's more, learning and having a great deal of fun along the way.

I especially like the stand/base board that your ship's sitting on. It really looks the part.

Have a great week and happy modelling!

    Cheers

Excellent job on the cockpit and especially that wheel. Much better than the cast one.

I also was thinking that the cockpit is a strange design. Im sure there is a reason for it but I wonder why?

The new wheel is a big improvement over the cast one.

    Nice cockpit you have created
Strange design for it though, (not you, the boat designers i mean )

Hello again! I have completed the cockpit, with the companionway, grating, wheel, and walls. The wheel is not a compound that was moulded. I know this because I broke it into ten pieces, and scattered them all over the floor! It took a while to fix, but I think it worked out pretty well in the end. The roof and seat material is stained Manila folder. Next up are the bollards for the aft deck, the stove pipe, the skylight, and mast coat with fife rail. Sorry, the images are not great.

    Until next time!

I got my anchors done. Still need to blacken the rings. I wanted real wood stocks which were easy enough to make. For the bands i used electrical tape for one then went out and bought some car pin stripe for the other. The pin stripe was a hundred times easier to work with. One of the better tips i picked up here.
I decided to sew up and rig one sail then decide if i want to continue with the rest or remove it based on how it comes out.

Rigging continues.  All i need yet are my anchors, and sails if I decide to add them or not.  I keep alternating my stance on the sails.

Continuing on with the rear flight deck, there are 30 individual rails which consist of 2 pieces each which need t be glued together, making 69 bits to cut off and glue.

Once attached there is more to add, which are non slip lino strips with brass.

    Then there are the turntables.

None of these are glued down yet as I will paint them individually.

I finally managed to drill out holes for the stanchions and now can flip it to add the underside details.

Continuing on withe the upper hull, I tried adding step ladders but not really happy with them so I will only do the one side.

There are about 250 deadlights where the portholes were covered later in the war. The kit just has them as blobs but as usual, there is an aftermarket for them.  About 2 days of painful work.

Well, back from holidays, a little bit of work on the old girl today.

You cannot do anything with the Pontos instructions without other reference material. Moving on to the boat hangars, two for the smaller boats and two for the launches. The back deck includes nice bollards, (the holes in the kit need drilling out to widen), rails and equipment for the winch. You can see from the AOTS is is very busy below decks. .

The etch is easy to use just somewhat tiny.

For some reason only known to Pontos they do nothing with the hatches or windlass's. I used North star hatches and a Chrysanthemum windlass. You can see from what is circled what is the kit and what is replaced.

Then to add some realism, I have added some perforated gussets to the small boat hangars. As I intend to park some boat in there not much will be visible.

The larger hangars for the ships large launches are a work in progress but a lot is visible via large doors. I will finish this bit up when I put the hull together. This is all scratch and nothing to do with the kit or the pontos set.

This will be my second build. I bought it on eBay for $15.00 + shipping. It looks like all the major parts are there. If not I will either make them or buy them. The frame and false deck was already built. But it wasn't to my satisfaction. So I bought somemore basswood. My plan was the take everything apart trace the old parts and make a new frame. But  the old parts weren't symmetrical and wound up scraping the new cut out parts.  So what I did was scanned the drawings and cut the parts out and glue them on to the wood and cut them out. I only wish it had sails. That is okay.

I want the experience before my HMB Endeavor build.
Tomorrow I will start putting it together.
As long as I don't get tired I will keep working on it.
This is a hobby not a job.

Beautiful job, Lou. The marquetry is exceptional. The continuation of the deck planking aft up the face of the quarterdeck partition looks a bit unusual to me. Were you going to place a strip of molding at the transition? In addition to Doc Blake's exceptional model, perhaps this one from the American Marine Model Gallery will further inspire and provide a few rigging hints: http://www.shipmodel.com/files/fair-american-full-hull-webfair-american003.jpg

Looking good Elijah.  Have you thought about replacing the ships wheel?  Most of the time I have found that the kit supplied ones leave much to be desired.
This would be a good challenge for you and a learning experience.  There are a few members of the club who can help you tremendously.

Great work Elijah! I will second the comment to replace the ships wheel with a custom built one. It would be a fun project for you to do and it sounds like you have a great club to help you out. Plus you can always fall back on the cast one if you need to.

I always like having the scale figures to put on models. Adds a bit of life to them and the reference points that they provide make putting into perspective the size of these vessels easier. I typically prefer my sailors to have clothes though...

Should deadeyes be painted black, or would they be left natural during the late 1860's?

Carl:  what you say is true, but with very brittle hardwoods (blood wood, yellow heart, ebony, rosewood and even boxwood sometimes, the problem is blowout or ragged edges on the outbound side of the hole.   Progressively increasing the bit diameter and reversing the drill at the very end help reduce the problem  A backer-block will help a lot too if you can use one.

Mike:  You need to be pretty close to the final diameter of the hole to use the "reverse the drill" technique.  It won't hog out a lot of wood.  When a drill cuts the right way, it's like using a continuous spiral chisel:  the wood is "shaved" from the wall of the hole.  If you reverse the drill direction, there is no chisel effect, but friction between the metal and the wood can enlarge the hole slightly.
