IgorSky got a reaction from canoe21 in Symphony by Omega1234 - FINISHED - 1/200 scale - 112' Ketch
Hi Patrick,
I used a similar technique to make the bars on the light window. I used the wire diameter of 0.15 mm. What sizes blinds you need?
Best Regards!
Igor.

Hi Ben, Igor and all those who pressed the Like button. Greatly appreciated!
Well..................and it's a long well....I tried so many times to make the louvred windows using the methods suggested by Ben and Igor (thanks guys!). I tried the wires as well cutting strips into a suitably sized piece of styrene. Neither method worked and it started to do my head in! I guess, I just wasn't in the right head space to make either method look good.
In frustration, I resorted to actually cutting thin strips of veneer and gluing them directly into the frames. The results are shown in the photos. It looks passable and just needs some trimming.
I've also taken the motor out so that I could take some photos of it. The results are shown below.
Anyhow, enjoy the rest of your weeks, everyone!
Cheers
Patrick

Hi Ben
Now, that's thinking outside the box! I like the idea of closely spaced wires to simulate the louvres.
I'll give it a go and see how it turns out.
Thanks and good luck with Baby No.2.
Cheers

Hi Patrick
No baby yet; we thought we were going to be celebrating last Wednesday or Thursday, but progress stalled out. So we are waiting again :/
As for the louvers - again, the idea (I think) is to capture the essence of the louver. What if you used thin, fairly closely spaced dowel or wire? At your scale, and aided by the fact an observer would be looking in and around the hull and deck cutouts and other interior work, a frame with just a bunch of closely spaced straight lines (the wire or dowel) would give the impression or essence of a louvered vent, since there are three dimensions, and therefore shadows in the spaces in between the lines, even though the shape of the 'louver' isn't accurate to reality.
I did a quick 3D model to demonstrate the effect I'm talking about. First, the close up showing thin dowel/wire closely spaced (the spacing can be adjusted as needed to approximate the actual vent):
Now, zooming out (or scaling down), you get the essence of louvered vents; again, the spacing can be adjusted to achieve the desired effect:
Another possibility might be to take a piece of plastic styrene the size of the opening, and cut closely spaced slits into it with a fine blade. Not sure if that is any less work than the previous suggestion, or if it is even practical; just another idea.
Good luck!

Once all 4 pieces are in the bottle and glued into place I'll hide the joints by blending in some modelling paste. Some paint touch ups and she'll be good to go.
Thanks for asking a great question on your part!

Looking nice Jeff! The sea looks angry, yet realistic, which is a credit to you. One question though, how will you hide the 'joints' between the seas?

Life has been very busy however some progress has been made. Seas are painted up and final touch-ups will have to be done inside of the bottle. I have to also add; some spray detail by the hull, some Woodland Scenic water effects by the hull to show some transparency as well, aforementioned done inside the bottle. Steady as she goes!
Dental pick to show the scale..... Happy Father's Day to all who read this.... Jeff

Hi everyone!
Well, over the last few nights, I've made more progress on the interior accommodation. The following photos show the bulkheads temporarily positioned in the hull, hence why it all looks a bit wonky at this stage. Oh well, heaps of work yet to be done, but that's all part of the fun, isn't it?
All the best for the week ahead!
Cheers

Thwarts
The Thwarts are next. The central one is fitted with the clamp that holds the mast, and a step is fitted to the keelson below it :
The Stern Sheets and Knees :
The upper fore Platform and Breasthook in the bow :
There are three eyebolts and rings fitted, one each in the stem and sternpost and one amidships. These are the smallest ones I've made so far - 0.35mm wire, the ring is 1mm inside diameter :

Next jobs were the Fore and Aft Platforms. Card templates were made for both :
The first plank of the fore platform. The glue has just been applied and not yet cleaned up :
A pic of the fore platform at a later stage of the build :
The aft platform. The Knees have also been fitted in this pic, but I later removed them to fit the stern sheets (seats) :

Thank you Nigel, Greg, Maury, Nils and Popeye .
The ribs have all been installed, and also the Keelson. I'm in the process of fitting the Risings which support the Thwarts (seats) :

Good work Danny,
mounting the ribs after "unplugging" is a good alternative way, trust it is the cleaner way....
great looking

Ribs
I used the plug to form the 1/32" square ribs, once again using Tamiya tape to hold them in shape while they dried. The Tamiya tape holds onto the resin plug very well, and is easy to apply using the tape holder/cutter. The tape is 1/4" wide :
A couple of hair clips hold the rib in position whilst the glue dries :
The aftmost rib. The tops of the ribs will be trimmed when they are all fitted :

Planking
As suggested in the instructions I've planked the hull of the cutter without the ribs - they'll go in later as most of them would come off the planking when the hull is removed from the plug. This pic was taken with a couple of runs left to do. I'm using Tamiya masking tape to hold the planks in position while they dry :
The cutter removed from the plug. It came out very easily :
Some pics of the outside. The planks need a "rolling" bevel both fore and aft to fit to the stem and transom :
There was very little excess glue inside the hull. These pics were taken before I started any cleanup :
You can see a couple of wedges in the bow which I inserted to ensure a tight fit to the plug. Isopropyl alcohol made removal of them easy :
