Jeff-E got a reaction from KARAVOKIRIS in HM Schooner Pickle by Jeff E - FINISHED - Caldercraft - 1:64 Scale
Thanks Chuck for your kind comments and for looking in.
Hello All,
The tackle pendants were fitted to the lower masts using a cut splice. The splice was made by using a needle threader to poke the ends of the 0.75mm thread through the strands of the opposite leg of the pendant a couple of times, it was then seized with cotton thread which will be painted black.
The fore mast has also been fitted. You may notice that the topmast has not been fitted at this stage, this is to allow me to rig the shrouds and lower stays off the ship which I think is a lot easier than trying to tie seizings at the masthead and the dead eyes on the model.
The driver boom and gaffs have been assembled and need a little bit of sanding where the yokes are attached before painting.
Comments always welcome.
Thanks for looking and the likes.

Although from the pictures it doesn't look like there's been much of a change but, it's the little things.
Made some advances to the bow section but haven't painted or installed them yet.... I know as soon as I glue those little dowels in, I'm going to shear one of them off. I'll hold off for now.
Completed the top of the rail, painted and installed the channels and made the dual railings on both sides of the model.

Progress...
Havent installed anything to deck due painting. Progress in details is good so soon there should be many little things added to the deck. Even Admiral is pleased with progress but not with me staying at workshop allmost every day-soni guess its Netflix and chill tomorrow. I have totally forgotton myself to the ship world.
Some problems:
1) Bowsprit does not sit on keel. Probably have to sand it to correct position. Like i said lesson learned.
2) Ropes on bowsprit are not posotioned like on pictures but are exactly like on drawings- lets call it Occre messy instructions again. No adjustments there.
3) i hve a hole in beck under bowsprit-Will order a barrel there or aome other addition to cover it.
4) painting does not have so good straight lines but lets call it common to that era-they didnt have lasers and autocad
Lessons for me so far:
1) dry fit mast and bow at early stage
2) varnish small details before installing them
Progress:
1) main mast allmost done. No issues there.
2) fore mast allmost done
3) bowsprit allmost done
4) lot of deck fitting done-allmost all painted
Also started doing some deadeyes. Different drawings and books have different solutions. I like how mine is. Tried Master Korabel solution also but that knot makes it so fat and it does not look natural. Is my way correct?

Hello All,
I hope you are all well.
Work continued on the construction of the fore and main masts. The trestle trees were glued together and the lower masts were assembled according to the instructions. The upper sections were painted black and the lower parts were stained with an oak stain.
The fore and main topmasts have also been assembled and painted.
All comments welcome.

Thank you Eamonn. I used 5 minute two part epoxy to glue the metal parts together to give me a bit of time to get them in the position I wanted and there were a few 'Trying' words uttered waiting for it to grab.
Thank you mugje.
Hello All,
The deck houses and companionway hatch have been assembled and painted. The inside of the companionway was painted white to lighten the view to the lower deck when installed.
These have been put aside as they won't be fitted until after the rigging is complete to give me easier access to the belaying points on the rails.
The bowsprit has also been made and painted. The deadeyes for the bowsprit shrouds, bobstay and forestays have also been fitted along with the stop cleats for the gammoning rope.
All comments welcome.

Thanks Patrick and Sam for the kind comments.
The first two yards have been hoisted in place, using the parrels and without need for any temporary pinning. Man there is a ton of rigging on this puppy. Ropes everywhere.
Nice to have such a great hobby for these strange days.

Now i have place the 4 parts of the second deck,i glue them and start the planking in the ship, because i think i can cover better the gaps and the deck will be placed correctly. But as you see in the pictures,i stopped in the half of the deck...because the planks 1X3 mm are finished...!!! I havn't damage any of them,i use every sinlge of them,but...isn't enough. I wrote to OCCRE and they answer that they will send me 60 planks more....Good service from OCCRE but why? The two members here SJORS and IOANNIZ who make the same ship they don't wrote something. Anyway,i must wait now the new planks to continue, hopping that this will not happen after again...

So...
Being pissed and everything so painted hull and tried to find out why varnish turned grey. Apparently i used flass matt varnish and maybe pencil was dirty or i didnt mix it well( railing area on picture).
Tried an other matt varnish from Admiralty and it worked like a charm on small area. So now just need to finish painting and then matt varnish it is(i will hide flat matt soni dont use it never ever again).
Main focus is on small details. It seems its still a lot to do on deck but end is there.
Made big mistake also-bowsprit does not sit on keel. It seems that front keel isnt correctly positioned so i have to find some solution there.
Lesson-dry fit bowsprit and masts at early stage so you can see how it fits.
Continiued with masts-i really enjoy it. Makes a feeling that now ship develops to the hights. And its higher than i imagined.
Im still little afraid the knots but i checked Master Korabel Polotsk manual and they have almost all needed knots there. Also Hms Cruiser kit has some info so hopefully it will turn out fine cause i really want to use right knots.
Received package with alligator clamps-ONE OF THE BEST INVESTMENTS SO FAR!!!
Parts that Occre leaves untreated i decided to do with oak stain(Admiralty).
Also staind bowsprit oak but will leave too of masts probably untreated and only with varnish. Cause my build on decknis little messy i have to keep that wear and tear look at there i think .

Started also second blong for Caldercraft Hms Cruiser. Will get that more going also soon-negotiations with Admiral are ongoing at the moment regarding sanding... she suggested balcony....its winter...
Recived package from Cornwall.
Really nice deadeyes compared to Occres plastic ones. picture shows left Occre, middle Caldercraft and right Caldercraft that are stained with ebony(also Caldercraft).
Occres instructions are missleading. Saying most of deadeyes are 4mm but on photo they have clearly most 5mm ones.
Received Birchwood brass black today and did some testing on metal parts. Outcome isnt what i hoped for but i thinknits me cause other members are getting beautiful results. So its more testing until outcome is right.
Other than that build in going nicely. Some reason sapelly wood is out so i have to use wood from other kits to finish last deck fittings. Last fitting to be done and installed on deck. Then i varnish it all.
Question-do you varnish ropes or only that part that is on wood and gets covered by brush. Do you cover ropes with something at all?

Finally got both sides of the gun ports made, painted, and installed. Almost took as long to do the gun ports as it did putting copper on the hull.
Still need to work on the rudder (next) and install.

Hello All,
The next job was to fit the capping rails. These went on quite easily with no issues, they were painted black on the underside before they were fitted.
As can be seen in the above photos the deck gratings and the chimney for the stove have also been added, so have the rudder hinges.
All comments welcome.

Hello All,
The channels have been fitted and the outside of the hull between the water line and the gunports has been painted black. There is still some touching up to do around the channels.
You may also notice in the above photos that the carronades have also been fitted. I did not take any photos of their assembly as it was a tedious and patience trying process, especially the assembly of the trunnions but in the end I think they turned out OK and I am quite pleased with them. The breech ropes and their eye bolts were fitted to the carronades before they were installed on the model as was the side tackle, the eye bolts were then glued into the predrilled holes in the bulwarks.
The rope coils were added and so were some of the deck fittings such as eye bolts and cleats.
All comments welcome.
