    Hi,

I love your deck work obviously you used cocktail sticks for the treenails. But how did you do your caulking as even up close like this it looks fantastic?

Excellent. It has always be my feeling that the easiest and quickest way to ruin this kind of ships, is paint it with shiny colors!!!

Ugh, the sanding part.... yeah, I'm already looking to see if I can use my electric palm sander to hit the really rough stuff then finish by hand. That is one of those jobs suited for sitting on my back porch with a few adult beverages while I sand and sand and sand and sand and sand.....

Thanks for the compliment Zoltan and to all the likes! No matter how many times I see them it always feels good to see that others are enjoying the build with me.

    A little update.
Here I had to prepare the bulkheads before glueing them to the keel. First was to extend the deck lines with a pencil then add little deck mount blocks, followed by the addition of two deck beams that were bent using water then heat.

Not much but I am taking my time, reading ahead, making sure I understand why each step is done. I probably don't need to mention this to the experienced builder but always looking ahead is the way to success. In my books anyway.

20 strakes are now completed on the port side and I have to admit I am much happier with the way this side has give compared to the other. Now it is time for another break in planking to go work on La Couronne but up next is where I have to start making some bigger decisions. The next push will take the planking up and over the two false gun decks which by itself is not a big deal however, with the modifications I am wanting to do to attempt to detail the cabins, I need to finish figuring out how to build them.

I am also debating on if I will add any planking or other details that could be seen down through the gratings to the lower decks. Also the false deck for the weather deck still needs to be set in place and I would like to plank it over before the sides are up. I need to set the foreward most bulkhead at the bow so I can shape the hull planking to fit that angle and there are many other little details and things that I keep thinking of doing before the planking closes off the interior.

I have a feeling that that there will be lots of hours coming up soon of test fitting and research  more that actual building. On the plus side, this log will start to get a lot more interesting as more than bad planking will soon be shown!

Obviously it was extraordinarily humbling and intimidating to have been asked to complete Augie's Confederacy.  Aside from his excellent work, Augie was an extremely popular gentleman on the forum, and for all the right reasons.  Quite simply, he was just a great guy.

I can honestly say, I did my best for him, and I hope he's happy with the end result. Thank you all SO much for following along and providing such great support.

Here are a couple of shots of the finished ship. More images will soon be up in the Gallery of Completed Builds, and once that is done I'll update this log accordingly.

    Hello

The upper ends of the frames are provided with supports.
So that they can be less easily damaged.

I started with the filling of the lower space of the frames ( i think "fillerbloks" is the correct word).
Wooden pieces are sawn to length.

These pieces are then made at approximately the right shape.

    And glued between the frames

A few frames also had to be adjusted.
One side is filled up, and can be sanded.

    One side is sanded

I used this machine to sand the rough shape

Some  test planking is attached (looks ok)

The frame of the stern has been modified and should now have better shape (thanks druxey).

One side is done and seems to have the proper shape below the waterline

    One side to go.

    Ps,
I had picture uploade problems, see :

Thanks for the info about the stern.
have checked this and will certainly change this later

    the book looks interesting.
I ask it for my Christmas at the Admiral.

    Now,
The whole idea behind my question about the height of the deck
    I want  open cannon ports
And I don’t like the building method as in my Wasa (black holes with semi cannons).

That's why I want a deck with enough detail. So, that if you look through a porthole. You do not see black hole with a part of a cannon. But a real cannon and a deck.

I hired an assistant. He is 1m60 tall, very cheap and is satisfied with no room and no food.
But. A deck of only 1m60, is too low he thinks .

but there is still plenty of time to think about this

    And good news
Yesterday we had beautiful weather and no family visits or jobs
So, there was wood sawed and the part where te deck is too be attached is sanded to

So that I can start with my deck in my hobby room. Without having to make a lot of dust...
so Mrs. Backer stays happy also

    Hello,

Yes Druxey these things were human powered from the start well into the steam engine era.

Here are some more progress pictures. I started the bow and stern planking then I went to the side planking. On one side I will let an opening in the side planking. I had to add a couple of temporary longitudinal stiffeners until the side planking was fixed as the model was starting to hog. The stiffeners are now removed so I can fair the inside before installing the deck clamps and other permanent longitudinal pieces. I will also plank the bottom on the outside but again I will let some opening on one side.

On a different note - I just noticed the forum site face lift and it took me a bit to figure it out but works better than the old one. GREAT JOB web admins!

With all my focus up to this point being on just getting plan sheets scaled and printed etc. etc..... completely missed the gun deck option and how you guys have done yours.
Now, after spending more time on your logs, I think I understand what I must do to cut some of the patterns to accommodate the creation of a gun deck between bulkheads "E" through "L".

Remarked the eight patterns like the pic below.

Looks like I'm in for a real sawdust day.

    Cutting out bulkheads....

I'm not sure if this posting makes much of a real contribution to my experienced friends, however.... I'm hoping a few modelers taking their first shot at scratch building might find it helpful.

Creating the bulkheads from plan sheet patterns can be a rather lengthy process, requiring several stages of development..... printing the patterns, rough cutting plywood blanks for applying patterns, gluing patterns onto the plywood blanks, then cutting out the patterns, cleaning up the cutout part and fitting to the model.

The bulkhead patterns seen here demonstrate an example of an issue faced by the scratch builder.
In order to remove the material from the two spaces within the bulkhead with a band saw, it is necessary to cut through the top of the pattern.  After removing the entire area, I have simply inserted a replacement center post and added a space filler where I made the cut.

These three bulkheads are used to show the three stages.  The yellow one is a plywood blank with a pattern glued and allowed to cure for at least an hour.

Of course, I should note that using a scroll saw does eliminate the need to cut into the pattern.

Clamps of every size and shape is the bread and butter of every woodworker....right?

The width of the lumber used to create the three main keel parts was about 1/4" too narrow for the pattern. So it is necessary to add a strip to the bottom edge of the assembly.
Not bad actually, as the solid continuous strip strengthens the joint between the three large parts.
Once cured, I will be able to trace out the bottom line and cut the full assembly to it's final shape.

    First Progress Report....

Great to be making sawdust again after finishing up the Sovereign of The Seas build.
Here's a little tip for scratch builders.... kit modelers seldom have to do this....
Cutting out parts on the band saw:
Rather than try to trace the shape of your parts onto a piece of lumber, it is much more accurate to glue the plan drawing directly onto the surface of your lumber and make your cuts after the glue has set for about 30 minutes.
This allows you to optimize the layout and reduce the material waste.
Also, the issue of tracing a part actually increases the size of the part for obvious reasons.

Seen here, I make a rough tracing of the part simply to define the area I want to spread the white glue.
Then apply white glue to the marked area and smooth out with your finger.
Then apply the drawing and smooth out with your finger.
Let it set up for about 30 minutes...........

    Ready to make some sawdust!

    SCALE....
If, like me, you don't have a real perspective in terms of the difference between scale sizes. here's a little visual you will appreciate.
This is what made me say "Holy She It"! when I first saw the difference in the size of this bulkhead part.

Now, as the saying goes  "You get the picture".

    Billet head carving....

Giving each bulkhead an hour under the clamps gives me time for some carving on the billet head.

Using one of the photos taken from the net, I have managed to rough out this relief carving for the starboard side.
Looks pretty rough for now.  I'll have to leave everything as a flat surface for now until after I eventually paint the entire piece black.
Note - I haven't worked on the oval area of the flag yet.

The pencil marks indicate the upper and lower rails which I will begin playing around with after carving the port side of the beak.
Eventually the knee with the howse holes will be created to blend into the beak and I will have to continue the carvings into that knee.
My plan is to paint the whole thing flat black, then carefully remove the black from the top surface of the relief with a scraper and try to paint the white scroll work.  At that point, I can work on getting some of the subtle detail to the scroll "leaves".

    Beak refinement....
The last posting was an experiment, but needed refinement in order to entirely work.  The idea to use a router to create and inlay proved to have issues in terms of allowing me to attach the bow stem to the assembly now, yet allowing me to work on the beak carvings off ship.

I worked it out by completely whacking off the beak and creating a tongue-and-groove beak that can be added after completing the carvings.

    Problem solved!

    The Billet Head....

I spent a lot of time finding and studying close up photos of the beak .... particularly the billet head.  Most interesting was this old photo I found of the original billet head after being removed for restoration.

Since this is something that must be done off-ship, I decided I will need to do the carving before fitting the beak to the keel former. That represents a big problem with gluing up the entire assembly....right?!
Went to bed last night with this on my mind, realizing I would never be able to come anywhere close to creating that detail with the wood I used to create the bow stem....poplar is not great for carving small details.

The solution popped in me noggin at 4:30 am.... Up and to the ship yard!

    Four hours later......
This is the beak as created from the plan pattern....

And here's the beginning of the poly vinyl billet head carving I began working on this morning.  Much to go yet, but I'm fairly pleased with the experiment at this stage.

And the simple method that came to me at 4:30 am this morning.... inlay the carving onto the beak!
Used a small router to remove the material from the area where the inlay will be fitted.

Once finished and painted up with black and white details, I'm hoping it will turn out not too bad.

I managed to get the rabbits cut last night.
I did take a little different course in the method I chose.  Instead of making the rabbit at the bottom of the main keel former assembly, I marked the tips of each bulkhead and re-cut the edge of that entire assembly flush with the marks.
Then I simply shaped a slight bevel along the new cut.

Then I re-cut all five pieces of the keel assembly.....which no longer fit the modified shape of the keel former.....
Then I used a small router bit to cut the rabbit along the top edge of the new keel parts, including the stern post and beak.
Everything came together real nice in a dry fitting.

    Bulkhead former's all cut out....

Finally finished cutting out all of the bulkhead former's and fit them into their slots on the keel former.  Can now begin marking and cutting in the rabbit before adding the keel and stern post.
Then, of course, comes all the squaring, and measuring, and aligning of each bulkhead.
Note, all of the top beams have been removed from fifteen bulkheads, allowing the possibility of installing a full gun deck.
I have not yet decided just how far I will take the gun deck.... still studying photo's.... looks like a lot of exciting possibilities.
