  1. I am not sure that I understand exactly how the gasket is made but I get the picture and will do some small scale test first so I know what I'm doing before I start on the block I made earlier. Thank you. Lextin
  2. I am making a block and am wondering how would the rope that wraps around the block be made for a full size block? would the whole rope be served or just the eye? how is the rope spliced on the bottom? would there be a thimble in the eye or not? It is a single block that is 5 inches tall with a 3 inch diameter sheave wheel. Also, its a bit late now but did I make the right choice in making this block from hardwood or were real blocks made from a softwood like pine?
  3. I know its way too early in the build to be making deadeyes but I couldn't resist I made a shaping tool out of a razor blade then I turned them on the drill press and drilled the holes using a piece of wood with a deadeye size hole in it to hold them wile I drilled the holes for the rope. I still need to make 12 more large deadeyes and several smaller deadeyes. Lextin aka qwerty2008
  4. I have a craftsman tool sharpener it has a fine grit rotating wheel that runs thru a water bath for cooling it combined with a polishing stick for fingernails (this can be substituted with 2000+ grit sandpaper or a polishing wheel on a rotary tool) creates a edge that you can shave with even on my cheapo chisels and mini planes. For X'acto blades I use the above mentioned fingernail polishing stick or a old leather belt lathered with a polishing compound (toothpaste) to keep them more then sharp enough to shave with.
  5. Not much progress since my last post. Today I made a mockup deadeye. Lextin aka qwerty2008
  6. Michael I intend to make a victory cross section in a bottle and it will have mast and rigging I already have a good bottle for it.
  7. Since I couldn't work on my 1:48 scale Triton cross section as much as I would like I decided to make a smaller one in a bottle. I went mostly by memory for the design it is made mostly from card and balsa wood the cannons were turned from bamboo on my drill press all the coloring was done with redwood stain and black Rust-Oleum spray paint sprayed into a jar then thinned (probably a bit too much note the bleeding on one of the cannon carriages) with acetone. I made the model in pieces so that I could fit it threw the neck of the bottle then I assembled it inside the bottle it came out a little crooked but looks OK. I still need to put on some finishing touches on the outside of the bottle before I'm done it took less then two days to to get to this point.
  8. My dad decided to wait until the last few seconds and it did not go threw in time so he lost the bid
  9. My dad was unable to get new machine but has found a used one within our price range that he will bid on tomorow morning. Cross your fingers
  10. Random question (probably a stupid one) does anyone know what happened with the Vermont after it was sold? was it scraped? was it destroyed? is there anything left?
  11. I am not sure but Turbo CAD probably can save .dxf files. I already have Corel Draw 15 and the cutter comes with software that sends the files from Corel Draw to the machine similar to what my dads vinyl sticker machine uses.
  12. this is my 100th post on the new forum I stepped the fore mast and setup some mockup rigging so that I could take some pictures showing its full size. Sorry about the messy house we are still in the process of moving in. Once the new toilets are installed and we can get the refrigerator in the kitchen it will look a lot cleaner.
  13. Me and my dad went to look at the machines today and just need to figure out which one to get and what options to get then place an order (hopefully Monday) after that it will be another two weeks until the machine arrives. The guy showing us the machines made up some samples for us. the clear acrylic didn't scan properly Does anyone know if turbo cad will work with a laser cutter?
  14. I accidentally posted it in the gallery for completed KIT builds. Can a moderator please move the gallery images to the correct gallery. Thank you. Lextin AKA qwerty2008
  15. My dad is planning on buying a laser cutter-engraver and when I hear laser cutter I model ships come to mind. The smallest machine that the company which my dads looking at can cut over 1/4 inch thick wood but my dad is looking at a midrange model which can cut even thicker. I was wondering how often do you guys think that I will be commandeering it? and what for? would it be hard to design parts on the computer in order to cut them? anyone here have experience with laser cutters? if so can you give pointers. I hope that my dad is able to get this machine. Lextin AKA qwerty2008
  16. I wish that I could help but I am having similar problems myself, if i figure it out I will try to pass it on.
  17. I made the mainmast step. The main mast is actually an inch two short but it will have to do. Lextin AKA qwerty2008
  18. I bought a cork today and popped it in the neck of the bottle, now the model is finished.
  19. Thank you I thought that it would look better than just a Turk's head.
  20. I started on the turk's head knot for the neck of the bottle and was wondering if I should just go with the two strand (image 1) turk's head? or should I make it a three strand turk's head? or should I just wrap the remaining rope around the neck (image 2) to push the turk's head to the top of the neck?
  21. I was thinking of extending the bowsprit so it would have three spars and adding a fourth jib or moving the third jib out further. I took a quick look at what I was thinking of doing with the bowsprit and it turns out that the fore mast on the ship is actually set further aft making the bowsprit look longer so I will probably skip this idea. By swivel guns I meant the small bulwark mounted guns I made a mockup one out of a cannon off my failed Constitution. I am trying to find out how many guns/ swivel guns I can put on the model without overcrowding it. I will try to find some 6 pounder plans that I can use. The cabin structure on the deck will be replaced with a skylight and the main hatch will be made larger Yes that would be nice, I cant seem to find detailed information on the internet for these types of ships. Yes I am trying to build a Baltimore schooner/privateer not a recreation. I do have excel but it is only a trial version and will only let me view and print, this should be enough right? I also have adobe PDF viewer which is what I used to print the Triton cross section plans. Thank you. Lextin AKA qwerty2008
  22. Thank you Jerry, I have actually been using the sail plan from your website to get the approximate spar dimensions but its printed on a piece of 8 by 11 inch printer paper so scaling it up is rather difficult and not exact also I didn't tapper the lower sections of the mast because I figured that it would be two hard to do with the mini planes but after seeing how easy it was to tapper the smaller spars I am starting to second guess myself . I might change the sail plan to include a flying jib boom but I don't know how to rig one jib let alone four on the same servo. I want to make it more heavily armed as well, how many guns (9 pounders and smaller) and swivel guns do you think the crew for a vessel this size (80 feet at waterline) can handle? also how big of a crew could I cram into this vessel if it were full size? Lextin AKA qwerty2008
  23. My dad has a similar airbrush but his is the one of the professional ones. If you are are using a full size air compressor then it would be a good idea to get a smaller more accurate regulator (attach to the larger regulator with a quickrelease adapter) and a moisture catcher these can both be purchased at most hardware stores. Note: the plastic moisture catchers tend to break very easily. Lextin AKA qwerty2008
  24. I found a new bottle out in the desert and think that it would be perfect for my next ship in a bottle. What ship do you guys think that I should put in it?
