Some more progress on the Victory I made the finale deck and painted the hull I also added the wales and the starboard gunports. As promised here are some pics of it apart. Lextin.

I will add a pic of it taken apart with the next batch. Can anyone tell me if the Victory had one of those door things on both sides or just the starboard side? Lextin.

I started on a HMS Victory cross section in a bottle. I made the hull by laminating strips of card over a form the decks are made from card as well they will be attached to the hull by strings that when pulled will assemble the model then the mast and rigging will be added. I still need to make one more deck then I can start making the details such as cannons the mast step and the chain pumps. Lextin.

I have been working on the removable keel the past couple of days. I made the fin and cut the slots for the bolts I also made a muckup weight from foam board the weight will be cast from approximately 30 pounds lead but first I will do another float test just to make sure that it will need 30 pounds if not I will adjust accordingly. Capstans don't normally appear on such small vessels but I wanted one and it helped with space management. I made the bars similar in proportion to the capstans on larger ships, if you look at the capstan on dafi's victory you can see that the bars go very close to either side of the ship so I did the same. Lextin.

I made the capstan, in the images it does not sit flush with the deck because I have not decided on an exact position yet also the capstan bars in the second picture are temporary mockups so I could see how much space the capstan would need. Lextin.

I started on the ruder, I still need to fill the tube with resin, make the hinge and make the tiller. I also made a skylight which will be placed just aft the path of the capstan bars. I am going to go with a capstan rather then a windlass, this clears up space in the bow and fills the extra space towards the stern. Lextin.

I have not done much work on the model lately but yesterday I did manage to make the tubes that the bolts for the drop keel go though. I also made a block to seal between the counter and the deck so water wont get in around the rudder which will be made from aluminium tube and clear polycarbonate that will be slotted and epoxied in place. I haven't been able to get on MSW for the past few days. Since my last post I made the t'gallant yard and the yoke and parrels for fore course yard and the topsail yard. Lextin.

Standing rigging color preference and historical musings

In Patrick O'Brian's Aubry/Maturin Series (either the 2nd or 3rd book) O'Brian describes the frigate Lively as having gleaming white (untarred) manila rope for both standing and running rigging. Is this correct? did I misinterpret the book? if it is correct then that would mean on some models one could use white rope for both running and standing rigging wile still being historically correct. I just realized that I interpreted the negative space in the line drawings as positive space and made the wales wrong. should I fix them or just leave them? Lextin.

I made the new deck and did some work on the deck beams also I sprayed a quick coat of white on the small boat. After seeing a video that Jerry posted on a different forum I realize that I will need several small boats that are significantly larger then the one that I already made which is still usable but will be the smallest boat on board. Lextin.

I pulled a hull for one of the ships boats off the smaller (shiny one) plug. This was the best hull yet although it has 9 strakes on the starboard side and only 8 on the port side. The first hull (made over a year ago) that I made was bamboo it didn,t turn out so well the second was newspaper layered then sanded it was to smooth and looked weird the third is strips of card with a wood stem and bamboo keel. I made the new stern davits also I have been working on the size and location of the smaller hatches and skylight. I found some plugs for the ships boats one is a boat from HMS Victory and the other was a unfinished model of HMS surprise that I made some modifications to I still need a larger one for the barge. I have decided that the flimsy deck that I made a ways back has to go and will be replaced with one cut from a single sheet of that fake wood (it will be coated in resin to prevent water damage) that is almost like really thick paper. I went back to my old plan to build up the bulwarks and reshaped the stern again. I also made the rails and made the catheads from the old stern davits which were too big. Lextin.

I made the supports for the servo tray and cut the gun ports. I decided not to build up the bulwarks as thick (I still might go back to my old plan if so that was a wast of Bondo) and smoothed the inside with some Bondo. I also changed the angle of the bowsprit to make it more accurate to the period that I am shooting for. Lextin.

I framed in the main hatch and reinforced around the mast with some scrap plywood then I lowered the whole deck 1/4 of an inch this caused some problems with the chase ports (I knew that I should have waited) so I reshaped the stern to cover up my mistake. I also made a mockup stern lantern (probably a little too small) to see what it would look like.
