Evening,
Hope all is well.
I've been busy in the Shipyard, but slow.
I started putting the deck in.
I know it's kind of cheating, but I'm not going to stagger butts in the deck.
I'll just use single planks this time. I would probably screw it up! It would look horrible, I know it would.
On my next build I'll try it.
The only place I did cut planks was when forming around the mast holes.
There's some waviness to it, but some sanding will help.
Pretty straight tho!
I'll take that!
Below are the stains I have right now.
I'm pretty much committed to the Early American.
It's going pretty well.
Slowly but steady. This ship is getting filled in.
Wont have the frames to hold it with. I find myself holding the main rail instead. That's a disaster waiting to happen!!!
The painting is going well.
Being that its hand painted...….I'm constantly on "dot" patrol!

Great steady progress and everything looks great.
I would suggest you consider applying a sealer to the basswood decking before you stain. Basswood is very soft, and has inconsistent density, so that it tends to cause blotches when stain is applied. Applying a sealer will equalize the density and help with a finer finish. Just a suggestion.

Started assembling the Carronades, this is a tedious task. I did make some changes and did not follow the drawings. I had difficulty making the breech line plates and the inhaul line plates. I was having difficulty drilling the holes for the rings. I was using my Dremel drill press and kept having the drill slip and end up drilling off the side of the plate.
So I decided to make a loop at the end of the plate and inserted the spilt ring through that. Here is a pic of what I did. I was having trouble zooming in and still have it in focus
I decided to make a jig to drill the holes and slots for the upper part of the sliding base. I wanted to be sure they were all the same. I used the sheet the parts were punched out of, and added a backing piece.
Here is what they look like mounted.
This shot shows the rollers attached to the base.
I then started assembling the gun tackles. This will also take some patience and time.
I am making the seizing by wrapping some line around a needle and putting some thin CA on it. Once removed I cut it to proper length and slip it on to the lines.

Dang - almost 2 weeks since I posted. I haven't been goofing off - not too much. Came across this game Naval Action a while back. I find it almost mesmerizing and fun to play. A lot of time spent there lately.
Work is continuing since the completion of the hull. There are a few deck items and hull trim going in and the next step is the masts. I'm starting the channels and preparing do drill out the holes for the masts. That's always a troubling exercise for me. That and the hawsers. The plans show the main mast at no angle, flush with a frame piece. The foremast is angled although there is nothing stating how much. The manual - " drill mast holes per plan". Well thank you.
This kit has had it's ups and downs. I've been shorted several more sizes of sticks but then there will be some good technique for doing something. I'll try to do a short eval when it's all over.
Here's a few shots:
I did an initial wipe down of the hull with linseed oil but all the pieces added afterwards are still unfinished.
Trim at the bow (head). Camera sure makes it look rough.
In the plans those rails are set almost 1/2" higher. Way too high. Took them down some.
In need of a cleanup for sure! Thanks for reading......

Evening,
Hope everyone had a great 4th of July!
I have been busy with Niagara, but I've been centered around painting.
Making a big push to finish the green and red on the inside of the ship.
I want all that done before I start the deck. Hopefully limit any paint getting on the deck. The deck will be stained instead.
Since Its all hand painted, its taking a bit.
A while back I had bought a can of Weathered Oak stain for the Deck.
But, I went back to Home depot trying to get a "Holy Trinity" of stain.....one dark stain, one med, and 1 light stain, and kinda go from there.
Below is what I ended up with.
I'm thinking the Early American stain instead of a light Weathered Oak, which was the original plan.
I'm sure something was drying, so Idle hands wanted to see where I am so far.
Never in my little head did I think I would get as far as I have.
There's a point where this skeleton of wood really starts to feel, and look, like a ship!
I think my Bowsprit came out well.
Pardon the Scotch tape, Its holding the Job Boom in place. The Flying Jib Boom is "in progress".
Nothing was glued, purely just having a little fun.
The Bowsprit will be painted all black.
First of many coats.

Well I completed the making the deck furniture. All sanded and painted, here are a few shots of the completed pieces.
I also assembled the capstan.
I used the kit supplied split rings and eyebolts for the grate cover. I decided to only cover one grate.
I started assembling the 32 pound Caronnades. Cleaned them up and put two coats of red paint.
Now onto putting together the rigging for the Caronnades. This looks like it will take some time. I plan on using the method detailed by 6ohiocav in his Niagara build to attach the hooks to the blocks. I also bought some 3mm hooks from Syren, I don’t think I have the skill to make my own at that size. Once they came in, it really surprised me in their size (really small, now I am sure I could not make them). I will post an update once I get farther alone in assembling the rigging.

mikiek got a reaction from Tigersteve in New member with a question about shipping models
Welcome to MSW CJ2S. Something else you will want to be asking is, is there anybody in (nameyourtown) that works on models that might be willing to fix what will hopefully be just a few small breaks? Unless you drive the models home yourself - and maybe not even then - it is inevitable that things will break off, fall off, come untied, scratched, etc. during transport. I have things break off mine just driving 15 minutes to some show. Of course that could also be your opportunity to jump into the hobby and learn what we do here. You won't find a better group than those here to help you out.
Make sure you get the display case as well. Depending on your home situation - cats, kids, dust, dirt - the cover will keep the build looking pristine for years to come. You can get them made locally but they range in price from maybe $150 - $500 for one that size. Always keep them covered.
BTW I agree with Chris, your dad did a wonderful job with that build.
Let us know what you decide.....

It looks as good as the air brush would have done. Glad you're going with painting it instead of blackening. I think in the long run it's easier. Especially if you have to touch it up after the pieces are in place.

Thanks Doc and Kurt! Actually, I didn't get it to work as well as I would have hoped. I cleaned it up and got it to spray liquid, but with the paint I could never get a consistent flow. So, I tried an alternative and brushed it by hand. I used a foam brush to prevent any brush strokes, and I think it worked out fairly well. I think the texture of the cannons works with the theme of the rest of the boat, so I'm pretty happy with it now.

After a good deal of trial and error, multiple attempts, and maybe a bit of frustration, I have painted the cannon barrels and the trunnion bands!

Yupper - pretty big indeed. BUt she's as clean as the day I put her in there.
Tom that paint jar concerns me. If you end up needing the paint 6-8 months from now for a last coat or touch or something it could very well be dried up. Seal that lid or look for a better storage jar. The cardboard gaskets don't last long in my experience. These work a lot better.
