Overworked724 got a reaction from thibaultron in Sultana by Overworked724 (Patrick) – FINISHED - Model Shipways – Scale 1:64 – Solid Hull – First Wooden Model Ship
Thanks, Lou! In truth, every time I take a departure from Chuck’s practicum, I am doubting whether it will result in long term benefits versus what he recommended. I’m starting to realize that there is no one way to achieve your result.
Damn the torpedoes!

I agree Patrick. The only proof on long term reliability is unfortunately............ Long term! Virtually every build on this forum has not withstood that particular test. In the mean time your solution looks pretty good and if twenty years down the road it starts coming apart you happen to know someone who knows how to fit it!

Another little tidbit for me to steal down the road Patrick.
Knew I was hanging around here for a reason.

Off to the weekend shipyard. Been racking my brains trying to figure out how best to simulate the metal bands around the top of the gunstocks and the anchors. Chuck Passaro used accent tape used in modeling. I tried that but the tape I have is simply too thick and I can’t seem to get the tape to on accurately. Black thread is an option like I used on the windlass, but these bits are much smaller, and the thread would stick out like a sore thumb. Finally decided I would try something ridiculous. Tamiya tape which, I use when painting, accepts back ink from a sharpie. It’s also the perfect thickness and is easy to trim to size and apply to the pieces. So...waaalaaa. Not a bad result.
Also prepped the anchor stocks (or whatever they are) and have stained them. Will add the tape later.
Some good progress. Tomorrow is painting day.

Here it is painted. Looks pretty decent. Will rig her up later. Busy week ahead.
- Plan to finish the bowsprit and masts and step them all together.
- Will fit out and finish the gun stocks, and paint the guns
- Prep the boom and fore/main gaffs
- Make the anchors
Then it’s all rigging. Getting close to the part I have been dreading!!!

Almost done with deck. Forecastle, main and quarter deck done. Definitely turned out better than I expected. Planking near the bulkhead was a challenge as the taper was a bit difficult to gauge...ended up eyeballing/sanding a lot.
Off to Japan now for 2.5 weeks. Hope I have a job when I return! Until then, the poop deck will be sitting first on the shipyard TODO list. ⛵️😌

Ok. Bowsprit Day. The jib-boom saddle and mast cap finally at the correct angle. Lines up nicely. Glued my freshly made cherry wood cap to the bowsprit and have decided it’s just too damned cute to paint black like the jib-boom. Drilled in the holes for the eye-bolts. Glue them on later when I’m ready to set the bowsprit in place.
Not a bad days work. I like it when things line up.
More pics later. After paint and stain have dried.

Hey Joe...you should try fiddling with a plank bender. You can get quick and permanent curvature by wetting the wood and rolling the wet plank along the curved heated element with pressure. When I was planking the Nelson (before life and the Sultana distracted me) I was getting good at using my cheapie bender. My shipmates from my club made me examine its use and they are pretty cheap. Just another option for you.
looking good!

Decided to attack the boys bibbs. 1mm basswood stock and a #11. Magic stuff. Xeroxed the plans, and made a stencil. Made sure caps were right size. (Close but not perfect....but pretty close. 😊)
Decided to prep 6 but I only need 4. Will take the best matching 2 sets and paint later. During cutting I wrecked one...make that 5!
If you look at my caps, you might have noticed that I needed to make a cap for each mast and the bowsprit. Used cherry wood (2.3mm). Matches the 2 mast caps I could salvage from the kit. Hey...works!!! But since my caps differ from Chuck’s practicum, will mount bibbs differently than he did.
Moving on...

Masts aren’t perfect, but they are passable. Getting the right lean in the caps (?) to match the rake was impossible so I eyeballed it...not lying.
Bowsprit and jib-boom required Some thought. I decided to do something different. Rather than shave down the front of the bowsprit, I decided to connect a suitable end of a toothpick to the end of the bowsprit. Fits perfectly in the cap (? Nautical terms are beyond me right now) and allows me to line it up without any thinking. I can sand front of cap flat later before painting.
The chuck between the boom and sprit required some sanding with round/beveled needle files.
Not bad! It’s progress. Moving on.

Started planking this week. The key learning moment this time around was in trying to figure out how to get the boxwood shaped just right. The best I could get was to soak it for 6 hours, then shape it into a board with pre-placed pegs for the correct bow shape... and leave overnight to dry. The wood is pretty brittle, so small sharp curves are a no-no. Lessons learned! So, the first plank has been set on both starboard and port sides. They may be incorrectly placed, but they are symmetrically aligned! ;-) I can be happy with that!

Still sanding on my long boat, but I have made progress on my jolly boat. The sanding looks good and its an even thickness using the calipers. So I stained the interior and sanded the stained the wood for the framing, floorboards, thwarts and thwart supports.
I glued in the "keel" and first frames as well as did a rough gluing on the aft grate.
