The new curved parts, all unnecessary beams will be cut away after planking the hull!

Next was the larger carriages I made "far ago". They were painted flat black. I have read the johnhoward file, but decided to let it with only two different carriages for the great guns.

And then there was the core for the cutters. This is hard work, grinding it by hand, but the shape comes out slowly !

    Hi Carl
This would not be good for a life steam engine. Too much heat, I will have to mek the engine from brass. And, my printer will not be ready for the dummy engine, lots of parts are ordered in China, as I will make the printer from "scratch" too! Maybe I`ll have another building report about that.

Most of the sanding is done, just a few milimeters still left. Took me about 20 hours to get that far.............
Beneath that I work on the PC for the engine, there is a lot of planing work to make. Everything must fit well to the hull, so I will have to make some sort of dummy engine for testing, and when all fits well then the real thing.

All parts are made of card and glued together to the appropriate thickness.
The shapes of bulkheads are based on HMS Sussex's plans, but I found there many inaccuracies and mistakes!!
    http://modelforum.cz/viewtopic.php?f=177&t=110763&start=30#p1990405
So it was necessary to modify proportions and make correction. Other parts of the hull are taken from plans HMS Prince.

    Hello everyone,
a few years ago, I finished my most beautiful ship - Sovereign of the Seas and I wished to find another similarly beautiful sailing ship which I would be able to build. There are plenty of glorious boats, but only for a few of them there are avalialbe good plans and exact information. I decided to create and build a card model of Royal Katherine from 1664. I do not have exact plans so I will proceed according to other plans of ships from 17th century - HMS Sussex and HMS Prince and use information from professional literature as well. I like great challenges and connection of fun and education, so I am looking forward to this project very much. The model will be created in the scale of 1/55,  so there is an oportunity to create many details in a higher level of quality.
During creation of previous models I have received many valuable and professional information about sailing ships, their construction and fitting from one of the greatest experts - Captain K.L. who has taught me a lot and I will also use his advice here.

The main build log you can find here:

Another week and this one should be finished. I can see light at the end of the tunnel now.
My aftermarket set has replacement railings for the model, in the form of photo etch stanchions and either very small diameter wire or thread. After looking it over carefully and dry fitting some of it, I thought the 2 dimensional photo etch stanchions looked out of place at this scale. They seem to look great on 1:350 scale models, but at 1:72 scale the 2 dimensional look leaves something to be desired in my judgment. So I used the kit supplied railings which are not perfect by any means but a better alternative in this case I think.

Today I made a battle flag by cutting a small piece of aluminum foil, shaping it a bit to simulate a flag flapping in the wind, then applied the Kriegsmarine battle flag decals to both sides of it before attaching it to it's mast. Rather happy with the way it came out but not so happy with trying to freehand the swastika on the flag as the Germans (Revell-Germany kit) cannot reproduce it on the decal I suppose. The aluminum foil was so delicate I had to be careful when drawing the swastika not to ruin the flag by piercing or folding it.

My next project. I should have bought this model a few years ago when they were plentiful because now, they are hard to find. I shopped around until I found one on Ebay from Russia.
This particular set included the Griffon Model comprehensive detail set.
I cleaned up the photo etch sheets in my sonic cleaner and am ready to begin assembling the boat.

One of the nice things about wood, is the possibility to correct one's mistakes without a lot of fuss. Nice recuperation, Gerhard. That plug will cost you some sweat, sanding it by hand ...

    Hi Nils
The DX Fix is a bit to strong for that small boats, in my mind! I would try it with the method from Nenad/Greg, think this would be much better than the foil. Or instead of that really thin shirt fabric (Hemdenstoff), strenghtened with thinned glue.

I recently visited the Steamboat Arabia Museum in Kansas City, Missouri (USA) to take photographs and measurements for my next model project, the Missouri River steamboat Arabia. If you want to read about that project, I'm documenting my research and resources in this thread. However, I wanted to share this non-Arabia feature of the museum:

I blew up the sign, but if you still can't read it, it says "World's Oldest Steam Engine known to exist that was made to propel a vessel powered only by steam. Built in Louisville, KY in 1818-1819 for the steamboat Missouri Packet. This was the first steamboat lost on the Missouri River, sinking near Arrow Rock, MO in May 1820." I thought this would be of interest to many of you. Arrow Rock is not far from my farm in central Missouri and is the site of a really lovely Missouri state historic site preserving an early river town.
