Worked a bit on the core for the cutters, and painted the skylights with flat black. Looks a bit better than the brown colour, thanks for giving some advise go to @johnhoward

Regards, Thank you all for watching!

thank you both Gerhard and Dan,

I just soaked some hankerchief cotton cloth in diluted PVA, see if it gets strong enough tomorrow morning...., maybe need to find the right dilution first...

    Hi Nils -

It doesn't look like your material took the sharp bend that it has to at the top edge of the bulwarks.  You might try burnishing the foil down with a hard, smooth tool.  A burnisher for the bookmaking craft would be best, but anything smooth and curved will do, including the back of a small spoon.

You may need to use thinner material, as Gerhard suggests, but you could try this first.

    Hi Nils
The DX Fix is a bit to strong for that small boats, in my mind! I would try it with the method from Nenad/Greg, think this would be much better than the foil. Or instead of that really thin shirt fabric (Hemdenstoff), strenghtened with thinned glue.

    Many thanks Greg,
for bringing this detail back to mind, I also remember when Nenad came out with this rolled back cover and very much liked it. It makes decklife look much more realistic

    And....................
    Where was this located??
I`m ordering all the wood material for the Cairo this upcoming week, so this would be good to know before I continue, dont want to go wrong
By talking about the stove, found some pics from the Southern Belle stove

    Hi johnhoward
Thanks for "lining up" the participants of the project!
You did understand the request for the steam exhaust system correct. So I dont have to worry about the stacks for the engine, and build some tubes from the engine via the preheater back to the big funnels from the boilers. Paddlewheel icing will be no problem here in Vienna, but the water preheating system will be made.

The drawing for the 12-pdr came from the civilwar-website, I scaled it down to the correct size of the barrel and made the carriage from the scaled drawings. Would be interesting if my scaled drawing will fit to Bob`s TurboCad drawings!

    Hi johnhoward

Would be great, to know the names behind the project
Now that we see so many of participants to the project we can imagine the size of the model, really big!
What I miss in all the drawings is the steam exhaust from the engine. I have read that the exhaust was used for pre-heating the water intake, but steam had to leave the system after that. Had the City class ships usual funnels trough the top of the superstructure? And where have they been placed?

I would not consider this as bad engineering, but space saving practice. Even if the City Class ships were not too small, space is always limited in ships. And taking water from the rivers was usual practice too in european ships, although the water in the danube or in swiss lakes is a lot cleaner than the muddy rivers they were used to work. So the mud drums make sense, and the "extra" steam drum above the boilers is in my mind an extra for the conditions this ships were used in. They allow a bit more of volume for the water, and extra volume for steam. A similar steam drum was used on the boiler for the swiss RIGI, but even smaller.
The photo shows the RIGI Boiler during resauration

    Hi johnhoward

When this pump was driven by the "Doctor", there must have been some linkage to this engine! Maybe this was one of the things driven by the "other" auxiliary engine? But even in this case there must have been some linkage too!

When I look at the differences it does look minimal, but in real size it must be quite big. It is nice to see that even at this scale you establish such a visible difference, and such crisp details!!! Wunderbar!

Thank you for the kind words.

And here, continue with the report:

The Grätings for the top of the foremast are ready for installation.

Fitting in the frame is very carefully carried out.

The size difference between the tops of the foremast and the mainmast can be seen here.

    Hi johnhoward

Thank you, so I will change colour to flat black for the skylights, no big deal to make it. The ship will get LED lights in it, so all visible interior will be seen well, but I will have to search for flickering lights to get a real effect. The inside of the superstructure will be painted light grey or dark white, the way you mentioned as "whitewashed".

    Hi johnhoward

I will stay with hinges, too much work to break them out of the frames. Breaking out the "glass" would be easier, but as I will let the windows open for sailing, this will not be necessary. I need good ventilation for the boilers and engine as this ship will get life steam, and I like to close such skylights when the model is set in the showcase. Much interesting is the question for coluor of the skylights, I found nothing about that! Shall I keep them as they are, or would (flat) black be correct?

Regards, and thank you all for watching

Hello again, and so many thanks for your likes!

Before I continued with the cutters core, I had to finish another work I`ve started earlier. The big skylight had no window glasses and no hinges, so I decided to make them first. If the coluor would not be correct, please dont be shy and give some info about the paint of this parts!

After the skylight I made the core for the cutters, must be grinded to shape now. Then I can start with the frames and planking.

    Regards
    Gerhard

    Gerhard,
I don't know if you have seen them but the battery powered flickering candles provide the perfect effect for kerosene lamps. We had planned to use them but our museum doesn't want any power in their cases. Too Bad!

Hi again, and many thanks for you interest & likes!

madt the barrel for the boat howitzer today, turned a small piece of brass, drilled the barrel, and soldered some small parts for the visor and the holding parts. Barrel fits well to the carriage.

And I did cut out the frames for the cutters, and prepared the parts for the core of the boat. I will make the boats as Johann @archjofo  did, just hoping I get them done as well!

    Hi All, again

Thanky so much for your nice likes!
Next thing was to "superimpose" the engine to the wheel, looks good for me. Cylinder length will be 50mm, with a stroke of 38mm and bore of 12mm.

Made some progress for the paddlewheel, just on the PC. First parts are ready drawn in 3D but must be transformed to 2D Drawings for photo etching.

BUT; could not stop myself and try to draw it as close as I can to the plans I have. The shaft and some other shims are not made at the moment, will be made later the day!

    Hi johnhoward
    Thank you, again....
Would be great, if you could show both pics in higher resolution, so I could scale them to the correct measure for the Cairo. The cutter length has been around 26 feet, IF i have measured that correct from the plans, just the launch missing in its length and width. The plans dont show the boats correct, even the Bob Hill plans show 4 equal boats!

Beneath the searching for the correct boats I managed to redo the field carriage. This was too wide with 22 mm, should have been only 18 mm. So I opened some of the soldering spots, shortened the parts, and soldered them together again. Width is now at 18 mm, just the axles are longer. They will be cut to correct length, when the wheels are made. And I started with the boat carriage, most parts are done, have a look at that!

Thank you all for watching & your nice likes!
    Regards
    Gerhard
