I built the Billing version years ago, pre-laser. It turned into a very nice model and I can recommend it. You're right in that it has very nice lines, which is why I decided to build it. I opted to change the name of the model and named it after my wife whose first and middle name is Cheryl, Anne. She has been much more tolerant of my subsequent modeling purchases ever since...

Hi everyone - more progress! Fist, the anchor davits were made from the supplied wood - the simulated sheaves were formed with a small round file after drilling the holes. Then the openings were made in the bulwarks & the davits were glued in place along with the knees. Next, I thought it would be a good time to do the roundhouses. The parts list showed them as pre-formed pieces, but darned if I could find them,so I made them from a walnut dowel cut in half & added some brass eyelets from the fabric shop. Finally the mouldings were added - they were made from some leftover brass moulding from another build

The caprails were then made from the supplied wood(sapelli). Since this wood is 2x12mm it was pretty much impossible to bend around the tight curves. The tightly curved areas were done by cutting small pieces to go around the curves, then after a lot of filing & sanding the joints they were painted black. You can see the joints in the close-up,but at arm`s length they look just fine. I think they pass the running horse test.

Thanks Nigel - planking is already well underway. Not going too bad - just takes some time to shape the spiled planks.

Hi everyone - a little update. The first planking is now sanded nice & smooth. I had to add a little filler due to not using filler blocks at the bow.

    Hi Mates,

Well she is done. Last pics for this log, a big thanks, especially to those of you who have followed along – for such a long time!! adding your kind and encouraging words, and all of your important advice. So many of your compliments have also helped me become a better builder – again thanks. Big thanks for so many of your Like clicks and visits as well.

Captain Steve: Up next, after much hand wringing –it was between the Billing Oseberg (1/25th)
As much as I became obsesses with Vikings after watching all seasons of The Vikings this kit is just too big (my fault for not paying attention to its size during the purchase) Yes there are smaller size kits – could be…..

So having learned so much with Vasa, I will go with the OcCre Santisima Trinidad cross section. I intend to bash the heck out of it, including leaving some of the lower and upper gun deck planking bare, as well as poss. at the weather deck as well – showing the, to be added,  under framings. And trying my first at coppering the hull.

Jörgen regarding the woods – those that came with the kit, along with wood from Corel’s Mirage. Then from Midwest products; some walnut, mahogany, Cherry, and beech. I did not use any finish on this build, nor do I intend to.

Again Mates THANKS SO MUCH for your kind words.

    Regards,

The casing of Pegasus took place yesterday, one of the most stressful operations since constructing the Headworks.
Slipping the cover over Pegasus with only a few mm clearance each side of the Main Studding Booms ends and Jib boom was scary to say the least.

Still all done now, and here she is in her designated place.

Moving on now, to what not quite decided.

Boy, not much of a breather between models. And we're talking "monsters". Anyhoo, all the best with your new project and I'll happily follow along.

Here is another update of my wood ship model - Brigantine Phoenix. I've added a few more deck items and finished the bow area. I've used almost no paint on this - it's all Minwax natural, ebony, dark walnut and golden oak.

I've done a bit more - added trim pieces inside and outside and stained the deck (Minwax Golden Oak) and the rest of the hull (Minwax Natural).  I'm not to happy with the deck as it a little splotchy due to the variation in the wood.

The second set of hull planks have been installed, also the decking and internal hull sheeting.  The wood here is untreated, I plan on staining the wood with MinWax stain, and I hope that I've gotten all of the wood glue removed (sanded off) or the stain will have another color.  I can see in these pictures that there are areas that need attention.  Any suggestions on glue removal?  I've tried to be really careful, but evidently not careful enough.

The kit makes it pretty easy - all hull planks are pre cut to the right shape.  That really helps - I'll find out when I build the AL Surprise.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  I've recently upgraded my tools in the shipyard, do you think I have enough paint?

The last three are photos of my office outside of my shipyard (storage room).

    Hi JP,
I have built the Billing version of this boat years ago. It is a very shapely vessel and I built it because of its fine lines. And I agree with Robin. It does have a holiday feel. Years ago while surfing the internet, I came across a Japanese ship model website that featured numerous builds of this model. They showed lots of imagination and painted the hull in all sorts of colours. They were awesome!

I named my model after my wife, which was an instant "point getter"!

    Have fun with your build!
