Ok...time for a small update. I trimmed the bow to shape and added the other side of the hull. The bow actually came together pretty nicely!

I would like to do some more this weekend. I think I will be able to get the first deck done hopefully. I still have to put the ribs inside of the hull. I have been busy tending to my wife's vehicle. Many repairs done this week so she can stay safe.

This part of the hull construction is a little challenging for the first time ship builder. But I think I am doing OK. I have used push pins and clamps to get the sides to twist properly. I cannot think of any other way to do this except one side at a time.

Here is a side view of the hull:

Here is the bow-end of the inner hull:

Here is the stern end of the inner hull. I found it very annoying that they cut the stern so long. I had to remove a good 3/4 of an inch of material to get it to match the frame level as required by the instructions. I found this angle hard to match, but it looks pretty good for an amateur:

Here is the bow. I may have to fill this a little after it dries, before I move forward with the other side.

I think it is going fine. Everything seems to be lining up pretty well.

Thanks to those of you who have taken the time to comment on my build. I really like the input!

That all looks fine to me Craig. Don't worry if you need to use a little filler - that has helped many a modeller in the past!

Just take your time, as you are, and ensure you keep enjoying yourself.

The King makes into a nice model.   If memory serves me correctly  Seaways Ships in Scale did an extensive article on this kit.  If you can find those issues it would help out tremendously.  If my SIS CD was brought with me I will try finding those issues.

I got the last two frame pieces in and I have glued the bottom on. The bottom was very tight going in, but I managed. It looks good and straight.

Next, I will do the sides and the knight heads. This may be tomorrow night if I can get some school work done tonight!

It's coming along great. The planking gets a bit tricky for the bow section but a bit of patience will help.

Good day friends... I have started some work on the KoM build even though the shipyard is not quite complete. Today I cleaned the frame pieces and keel. I used a Dremel drum sanding attachment to just run quickly over the edges to remove the laser char:

I was careful not to take too much material off of the edges. I then dry fitted the pieces into the keel and they all seemed to fit nice. Not too loose and not too tight. I used some 90 degree angle brackets to hold the frames into the keel so I can be fairly square when it dries:

I was able to get all but two frames glued onto the keel. I started from the center and worked my way out. The two that I did not glue in will need to be done one at a time due to the lack of room in between them. This is what I have done so far:

This is where I am at for now. I will finish putting the other two frame pieces in this week and I will start working the hull. I will update with more photos as I progress. Thanks for looking! Any remarks are welcome!

Another minor delay in setting the sails.

I noticed that I had not yet rigged the topmast back stays for the fore and main masts. Then I remembered that I ran out of rope for this. So back to the ropewalk to make some more. It had been quite a while since I had used it and it took a few tries to make enough for what I need.
I bet this is the only ropewalk made with Knex parts. After a few trials I even added a motor on the carriage and rigged my variable speed hand drill to drive the stationary end with the gears. Any way it works.
After I have make the rope I will stain it with General Finished Ebony water based stain.

Here is my third and last (perhaps) attempt to duplicate the real 'block' at the bottom of the bentnick shroud.

I used a thicker wire, made two loops at the ends so a pin (nail) would fit through these two loops as well as an eye bolt. The bolt is still loose so I can swivel this around the pin. I drilled the larger hole after the wire was in place. I had a feeling that to do the drilling before hand would cause the wood to split.
This should be as close as I can get to the real thing. But then I think, 'But nobody is going to see this'.
So be it, but it is fun trying.

Indeed Henry and again many thanks. Your pictures are perfect and they give me a lot more confidence in rigging the futtock and bentnick shrouds. See other post.
The plans (the sketch above is part of those) show the bottom tackle to be a '5/32 inch heart' instead of the bullseye you show. This part of the rigging looks almost the same as the main and preventer stays near the bow. So I will take some 5/32 bullseyes, drill the holes a bit bigger and try to use those for the tackle.
I notice that the location on the waterways is a bit to the right of center. I can understand the engineering for this, because to have them in the center would mean that both the shroud and cannon tackles would apply a lot of stress on the same location.

For the starboard side I am also thinking of preassembling the futtock shrouds (with the staves I made and show above) and attach them to the bentnick shroud before rigging all of that to the main shrouds. I will show my attempt to do this later.
But right now it is back to the ratlines.
BTW the hole you see near the tip of the needle is for the chimney; again something I held off until later.

The planking is superb to this point. I did not expect anything less as you are a true craftsman. Sorry you are not so good at picking football teams. Stick to the ship building! Lovely work Augie!

At 350 hours into the build, it's time for an update.

The second belt of planking (of 3) has been completed from the garboard on up, P/S.

Since the next belt will close her up, I took the opportunity to give the inside 2 coats of diluted PVA.  I like the way that seals the inside and stiffens her up prior to sanding.  With the false deck in place I will obviously not be able to glue the center section but 'two outta three aint bad'.

Though most of the planking is 1/8 x 1/16 basswood, I've snuck in some tapered 3/16 x 1/16 in the stern to try and minimize the need for stealers.  Will definitely need about 2 drop planks up in the stem.

Next will be the 'Super Bowl of Planking'......the 3rd belt.  But not before the real game today.  My team is in it -- GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!

I'm hoping to leave this lower hull planking a natural, lighter color then that above the wales.  All depends on how this next step comes out  .  Should be there before Spring ---- at least according to today's Groundhog forecast.

    Update time !

The middle deck has his planking.....
With ( for the first time ) the tree nailing......
I also plank the bow deck.
    That's it for the moment.
She goes on the shelf and the San Ildefonso is coming down again.
When the main mast has his shrouds and ratlines, I'll be back to the Aggy again.

Steve, I am blackening the brass straps to match the real ship in Boston. I also will paint the wooden deadeyes for the same reason. On the port side, thus far, I did not like the alignment of the deadeyes and black paint might hide my mistakes a bit.
I found that the patina works fine for me (as long as I clean the metal first) and it is easier than using paint on these small parts. In the beginning I did paint some using an airbrush, but with the primer first and then two coats of paint was taking a lot longer (not to mention cleaning the gun).
As far as letting Mother Nature do it? I cannot imagine that the brass would turn black in time. But the bottom of the hull might turn green.
