What a response and education! Thank you Jagger and Mark for your eloquent and informative narrative concerning the wale. Thank you Allanyed for your research material. All the information and research data will become part of my running "Deck Log" that will detail my entire voyage as a builder. Druxey, my broad type and era target would be 19th century American/British warships with focus on Frigates. Tweets and flurishes to you all.

"Epic" kits are something that I would not have the knowledge to comment on. But in my opinion the HMS Naiad 1797 1/48 by Albert would certainly be a strong candidate for an epic build.

I have finished installing the bulwark planks on the inner and outer side of the hull.  The outer hull above the wales still needs to be sanded smooth and treenails will need to be installed on the gun deck and outer hull planks above the wales.  Once that is done, I will move on to finishing up the guns and making all of the deck furniture.  I plan to use walnut for the deck furniture.

It may be a few weeks until I get work on it again due to a surgery that is scheduled for Tues on my left wrist; but I hope to be back at it in about 2-3 weeks.

On to the good stuff, here are some pictures for your viewing pleasure.  I snapped a few with the guns placed on the deck to get an idea of how it will look.

    Enjoy......

So far this weekend, I got the gun ports framed out and I lined them with a very thin piece of walnut.  I then planked the bulwarks with walnut and the gun deck with maple on the port side.  the starboard side in the process of getting its planks now.  Once that is done, I will sand it all smooth and treenail the deck planking.  Then I will need to finish off the little details needed on the guns and install them.

As always, any and all comments, questions, complaints are welcome.

Another update for the build log.

I have the waterways and lower deck pillars installed.  I used walnut for the waterways and poplar for the pillars.  Tomorrow, I plan to frame out the gun ports and cut some strips for the bulwark planking.  At first I was thinking about using walnut for the bulwark planking; and I still may.  I want to see what the poplar will look like on the bulwarks instead of the walnut.  Of course I am open to any suggestions and/or opinions on the matter.  The outer hull planking above the wales will be done in basswood and the deck planking will be done maple just as the lower deck.

    Hi John,

I have to admit I was a little disappointing when I saw on your website that you didn't ship to Canada.  However, reading this gives me a renewed confidence.  I'm not prepared to purchase anytime soon but I plan to in the future.  I'm glad to know that you will accommodate.

Hi Scott, I am the Proxxon Dealer and one of the Sponsors on this Forum.  PM me for a special price for members here. Just click on the "Proxxon" ad on the right hand side of the main page here on the Forum to go to my website for full specs on the lathe as well as pictures.  I have used the DB 250 lathe for all my ship and model building and it works flawlessly.  It has a hole running through the motor end so that a long dowel can fit through it and allows for a lot of work on the ends of the spars and masts.  My website talks about not shipping to Canada, but I will for members here.  It only is for the outside world.  Just bear in mind that shipping is around $40-50.  With your full address I can quote it properly.  I offer a combo kit which has the accessories.  If nothing else I would recommend the 3-jaw chuck and the chisel set since they are designed for small lathes and small work pieces.  Hope this helps and let me know if I can help.  I owned the lathe before I became a dealer and have used it for years.
    John

    Hello,

little update, here are the wrong pieces I must replaced with better ones.
I made building board of old furniture board. Also marked off space for keel( false keel).
Glueing keel with false keel together - I used PVA glue with black acrylic paint - It is not so good visible but maybe it come out with coat of varnish.
Last thing is unify joints for keel in every frame, I fixed frames on board with rectangular attached pin which fits to the groove for keelson. Then sanding until keel fits perfectly to the rabbet.

    Hello,

So I printed plans of frames, numbered them and glued them on 5mm thick wallnut sheet. here was important to glue the pieces straight and correct - as I later recognized and must redo 5 pieces, but with 9x11 pieces it was ok.
And then made a little dust in my living room with scrollsaw. I enjoyed this work and with my proxxon saw blades it was quickly.
I clean up ends of every piece , for this I has no machine, but for this was enough chisel and sandpaper glued on small rectangular wooden stick.
I glued each plan of assemly on a small platte 9mm MDF. And then try and adjust the pieces until it finally clicked together.
I glued them step by step I let the glue to dry and then added other pieces.
    Little training with treenails.

    Hello,

this is my first attempt at building ship (ok part of ship) from scratch. I think it will be a good practise for beginning.
I dare not to build whole ship yet and I also do not have so much space at home for 1:48 ship.
I choose american walnut for main parts. I got this wood from my work - it is not a common species here in Europe.
It is hard and has a beautiful dark colour. I made the first 3 pieces according to plan.

Rob I have the original portholes they pulled out nicely with the flush cut pliers before I started to fill the divets, they will push back in when the painting is done.

I had to pop the railing on loosely to see how colour matched and I am very happy with the match. In the pictures you can see the middle lower stanchions that are painted silver and the top rail and the two outside lower sets of stanchions look close enough to pass me-thinks

That's it for today A very satisfying bit of work.
