Hull planking almost complete.  Made a hash of the Bow on one side - didn't correct a mistake quick enough but I think it's retrievable.
Thanks to all the folks who check out my postings but I'm off to Blighty tonight so this will be the last post for a month but I will miss the old gal and look forward to sorting her out when I get back.

Hi Steve, thanks for your query.  Here are a few photos of where I'm currently at -
As you can see its coming on slowly.  I took the decision to drop those three planks in because I was having great difficulty twisting the bow planks to flow with the curve of the bulkhead (if you see what I mean).  I've pretty much mastered the bend around the bow and stern but I could see myself 'going off line' as I came to the bulkhead curve.  I think I've done something fundamentally wrong at some point and I hope you or your more experienced colleagues can put me on the right track.
I've also been busying myself with cannons and other deck furniture.
Thank you once again for your interest.
    Cheers

Wales and painting coming along nicely.  Big thanks to Anton T who suggested I prime/undercoat first before painting on the colours.  It's made all the difference.

Hi Steve, I've just been looking at your 'lump of wood' for the small boat as I got something similar with mine.  However. have you checked this log out
Take a look at his construction method for his boats it's genius (but seriously difficult).  As I was only supplied one small boat with my kit I'm going to have a go at producing the larger of the two boats as per John McKay.
    Cheers

I think that I mentioned a little while ago that the gun carriages supplied by the kit were hopeless - not to scale and cheap and nasty.  So I decided to try and rescale from John McKays book and scratch build some, although they aren't perfect by any means I'm pretty happy with them.  The main issue for me is the gun colour.  I didn't think matt was right so I've used Smooth Hammerite.  When I get another kit I'll buy some brass tarnisher - notice I said when I get another kit!!  I'm loving this new hobby and it gets better and better.

Beautiful work!!  Just discovered your log and will be following from now on.  The delicate work on the small boat is amazing.  I need to scratch build a launch for my Bounty and it's given me some good ideas.  Cheers and keep up the good work

Hi Anton, the kit I'm doing has one small boat in it which is solid hull but the kit only provides one and there were 2 on the Bounty.  I've been scratching my head how to make one and you've given me the inspiration to do something different and challenging.
    Cheers

Back to the model, been working on the next ships boat. You've already seen the smaller 21 ft (7.2m) launch/yawl now I've made up the 28 ft launch (9m). I'll be building a third boat and much larger than the rest more of the style of a shallop or very large pinnace as from paintings of the time there always appears to be quite a large boat sometimes only the one larger boat which would be closer to 14-16 m or 35-40 ft sloop rigged boat.

Thanks guys. It's reasonably simple to do Nigel just need to plan every step ahead. You can also carve out a solid hull for the former which I've done in the past. This took a bit more time as you have to carve the shape perfectly to get the correct hull shape before planking.

Making off the various lines around the foredeck is now almost  finished. The lines made off to the timberhead are complete. As I wrote in my previous post I have left a couple of lines to magically disappear. The timberhead is crowded enough and I have again convinced myself that less is more.

Whoops - I just discovered that I deleted the view of the timberhead towards the bow. I will post another photo later.

The blocks for the bunt and leech lines were a bit of a problem. The lines are supposed to be threaded through the blocks with tack toggles on the end of the line. This I duly did - for the first one. Here is. the toggle.

However when threaded though the block and through all the other rigging blocks (a small nightmare), the block on the yard refused to seat properly because the toggle protruded too much.  Re-rigging it didn't bear thinking about so I left it, doing a bit of ex post adjustment with some subtle use of glue.  If you look closely you may see the toggle - at least it's better positioned than it was.  For the rest I used a simple knot instead of the toggle.

The lines made off to the forecastle rail really are a problem. By my count there are 16 (8x2) to be somehow accommodated. (See the rigging plan in a previous post, above.)  So far ten have been completed.  Remaining are 80, 81 and 85. These all lead from the main yards.  The following photos will show how the ten have been dealt with, and provide an indication of how the remaining lines will be made off.  Lines 80 and 81 will go to the relevant support timbers  and the coils will go in the same way as 78 (you have your answer Arthur). Line 85 is still a problem, but I think the coil may be fitted next to the outside support timbers. I have no idea if all of this is 'authentic' but at least it's neat - and, after all - it is only a model.
